Homework Nine
Due: Saturday, Nov 7 before Midnight (upload to Gradescope)

Exercise 1 The block rests on a ramp inclined at θ degrees above horizontal. Take µs to
be 0.8, and µk to be 0.25. Let g be 9.81 m/s/s.

(a) Imagine slowly increasing θ. At what angle θ does the block start to move? (At this
angle, the gravity force component along the ramp is just high enough to overcome static
friction.)
(b) Once moving, the block slides to the base of the ramp. Using Newtonian physics (F =
ma and integrate), find (1) the time the block reaches the bottom, and (2) its velocity at
the bottom, assuming that at t = 0 the block starts sliding.

Exercise 2 The smooth ball of mass m = 0.3 kg is constrained to move in the smooth tube
which rotates at a constant rate of Ω= 5 rad/s about a vertical axis passing through point
O. Attached to the ball is a string which is being pulled towards O at a rate of q = 1 m/s.

(a) Obtain a nice expression for the acceleration of the ball relative to YFHB.
(b) Find the force exerted by the tube on the ball when s = 0.5 m. Assume that the gravi-
tational acceleration constant g of YFHB is 10 m/s2 .

Exercise 3 The Lunacycle is moving to the right along a horizontal line with constant
acceleration a. Attached to the Lunacycle is a pendulum consisting of a string of length l
and a small ball of mass m. The angle θ is constant.

Find an expression for tan(θ) in terms of g and the variables describing the problem.

2
Exercise 4 The small block of mass m is being pulled along the slot by the string at a
constant speed v. The slot rotates about a vertical axis through O at a constant rate ω.
The coefficient of kinetic friction between the sidewalls of the slot and the block is µ. There
is no friction between the block and the slot floor.

Show that the tension T is the string is given by

T = mlω 2 + 2µmvω

Exercise 5 The small ball P of weight W = 10 3 lb is in static equilibrium on the surface of
a smooth cylinder whose axis of symmetry passes through point O. The ball is also attached
to point A directly overhead O by a linear spring √ of spring constant k = 20 lb/ft. The
distance between A and the top of the cylinder is ( 3 − 1) ft. Points A, O and P lie in a
vertical plane which is perpendicular to the cylinder axis of symmetry.

Find: l0 the unstretched length of the spring.

4
Exercise 6 The rough inclined plane is rotating about a vertical axis at a constant rate Ω.
The small block of mass 0.1 kg rests on the inclined plane. The coefficient of static friction
between the block and the plane is µ = 1/2.

If θ = 45o and d = 100 mm, determine the minimum and maximum values of Ω.
