LISTENING SECTION

In this section of the test, you will have the chance to show how well you understand spoken
English. There are four parts to this section, with special directions for each part.

Part I Questions 1 to 4
Directions:
In this part of the test, you will hear some dialogues and questions spoken in English. The
questions and the dialogues will be spoken twice. They will not be printed in your test book, so you
must listen carefully to understand what the speakers are saying.
After you listen to the dialogue and the question about it, read the five possible answers and decide
which one would be the best answer to the question you have heard. Now listen to a sample
question.

Woman : I know. I will go to the grocery store to buy some more. I will also get some milk,
bread and fruit.

Text 1. Questions 11 – 14 are based on the following text.


Early one morning, Umar was walking to the bus stop to catch a bus to school. A loud,
screeching noise suddenly pierced the air. Umar realized that there had been an accident. A small boy
was lying unconscious on the road, and the car that had hit him had already run away.

Umar was confused and frightened. “Is the boy dead?” Umar asked himself. However, the boy
was still breathing. Umar could see that the boy had bruises all over his face and arms.
Umar did not know what to do. Few cars passed along this road at this time of the day. The
nearest house which he could go to for help was his own, but it would take ten minutes to walk there.
Umar finally decided to stay with the boy until somebody came by.
Time passed very slowly – so it seemed to Umar. The boy was still unconscious, and Umar
prayed for the boy to regain consciousness.
Umar sprang to his feet at the sound of an approaching car. He waved frantically at the driver
to stop. Umar asked the driver, “You will help this boy, won ’t you, Sir?” The driver was kind. He
carried the injured boy to the car. Umar went with them to the hospital. Later, the driver took Umar to
the police station to report the accident.
Umar had a lot to tell to his friends that day at school. All his friends though Umar was a very
brave boy. “it was an unforgettable incident, wasn’t it?” They asked him.
“Yes, it was, “Umar replied. “It was a terrifying experience, thought!”

The Football Match
My brother and I went to a football match yesterday. Our school team was playing against
another High School team. Our team wore red and white shirts, white shorts, and red stockings. The
other team wore orange and black shirts, orange shorts, and black stockings. “They look like bees“,
my brother said, and we laughed. They played like bees too. They ran very fast, attacked very hard,
and passed the ball to each other very fast. Soon they scored their first goal. My brother and I shouted
and shouted, “Come on, Valley School! Come on, the Valleys! ” Our headmaster was near us and he
was shouting too. He seemed very enthusiastic. However, the high school scored another goal. We
were very sad.Then, one of the “bees” stopped the ball with one of his hands, so our team got the free
kick. Our captain took it and scored a goal. We shouted, “Hooray!” The score was now 2:1. That was
better. Now our team began to play better — or the “bees” were getting tired. Our team scored
another goal before half-time. In the second half of the match, both teams tried very hard, but neither

When I was in Junior High School, I joined two clubs. They were the football club and the
karate club. I joined those clubs because I love sports, especially football and karate. I played football

One day my football club joined a football competition. There were eight clubs joining the
competition. At first, our club won the match. Then, we have to defeat another club to get to the final.
Remarkably, we won again. After those two matches, we had lunch in the cafeteria nearby. We were
so impatient to play in the last game. It was the hard one because our opponent was very tough.

hill behind the beach and saw the beautiful view from the top. We got back to the bus around three
o’clock and then we came back to town.

One hot summer day, two men were walking. Soon it become too hot to go any further. Then
seeing a large tree nearby, they threw themselves on the ground to rest in its shade.
Gazing up into branches, one man said to the other. “What a useless tree this is. It does not
have fruit or nuts that we can eat and we cannot even use its wood for anything.”
“Don’t be so ungrateful!” rustled the tree in reply. “I am being extremely useful to you at this
very moment, shielding you from the hot sun, and you call me a good for nothing!” then the gentle
winds blew and made the travelers fall a sleep

The purse of gold


A beggar found a leather of purse that someone had dropped in a market place. Opening it, he
discovered that it contained 100 pieces of gold, then he heard a merchant shouted, “A reward .. a

Being an honest man, the beggar came forward and handed the purse to the merchant saying
“Here your purse. Will you keep your word to give a reward now?
“Reward?” scoffed the merchant greedily counting the amount of gold. “This purse I dropped
had 200 pieces of gold, you have already stolen more than the reward I’ll give to you!, go away or I’ll
tell you to the police.
I am an honest man said the beggar defiantly, “Let’s take this matter to the court!”

In the court the judge listens to the both sides of the story and said, “I believe you both, justice is
possible!” “Merchant, you stated that he purse you lost contained 200 pieces of gold. “Well that’s a
considerable cost. Bu the purse the beggar found had only 100 pieces of gold. Therefore it couldn’t be
the one you lost.”
And with that, the judge gave the purse and all of the gold to the beggar.
