Various Grades of Magnesium Oxide

Magnesium oxide is categorized as a refractory material, which means that it is resistant to

decomposition by heat, pressure or chemical attack and retains strength and form at higher
temperatures.

Rahul Magnesia Pvt. Ltd. is one of the leading manufacturer and supplier of magnesium oxide from
India. The company also deals with exports of calcined magnesium oxide, magnesium sulphate,
magnesium chloride, magnesium carbonate and light magnesium oxide.

Let’s see about various grades of Magnesium Oxide in this article:

Light Burned Magnesium Oxide

Light burned magnesium oxide is a reactive grade of magnesium oxide that has been calcined at
temperatures ranging from 700ºC – 1000ºC. Rahul Mag’s high purity light burned magnesium oxide
products have a wide range of reactivity and are used in various applications such as:

 Catalysts
 Magnesium Salts
 Mining
 Other Industrial Applications
 Power Generation
 Pulp Bleaching
 Rubber & Plastics
 Wastewater Treatment
 Water Treatment

Hard burned Magnesium Oxide

Hard burned magnesium oxide is a low reactive grade of magnesium oxide that has been calcined at
temperatures ranging from 1000ºC – 1500ºC. Due to its narrow range of reactivity, hard burned
magnesium oxide is typically used in applications where slow degradation or chemical reactivity is
required.

Rahul Mag’s high purity hard burned magnesium oxide products have a relatively high bulk density and
low reactivity, and are available as both milled and sized products from a -325 mesh powder to a
granular 6 x 16 mesh. Milled hard burned magnesium oxide products are recommended for the
following applications:
 Abrasives
 Building Products (Interior, Non-Structural)
 Ceramics
 Drilling Fluids and Cements
 Fiberglass
 Magnesium salts
 Other Industrial Applications
 Synthetic Fibers

Hard Burned Magnesium Oxide is a high purity, technical grade of magnesium oxide that is carefully
controlled during the calcination and milling steps to provide a consistent reactivity. This product is
specifically designed for applications where controlled reactivity is required, and is recommended for
applications such as:

 Ceiling or Wall Tiles

 Dental Investments
 Leather Tanning
 Quick Setting Cement

Screened hard burned products are coarser than milled products and are used in various applications
such as:

 Agricultural
 Other Industrial Applications
 Wastewater Treatment
 Water Treatment

Dead Burned MgO

Dead burned magnesium oxide has been calcined at temperatures ranging from 1500ºC – 2000ºC in a
high temperature shaft kiln yielding a material with very little reactivity. Dead Burned Magnesium Oxide
products are high purity, dead burned magnesium oxides with high density and low reactivity. These
products are well suited in the manufacture of magnesia carbon refractory bricks, monolithic gunning
refractories, specialty refractory applications (precast shapes and castables), and miscellaneous
ceramics.

Rahul Mag’s Magnesia Specialties also offers sized and milled grades of Dead Burned MgO, which are
used in a variety of applications such as LCD glass, oil & gas drilling fluids and cements, ceramics, and
many other specialty applications.
Specialty MgO

Specialty magnesium oxides are manufactured to precise specifications in chemistry, size and surface
area. Specialty high surface area magnesium oxides are calcined at temperatures below 700°C to
produce highly reactive magnesium oxides for use in specialty applications such as:

 Adhesives
 Food Grade
 Rubber & Plastics

Specialty MgO is a medium reactive, micronized, magnesium oxide powder formulated for applications
requiring maximum consistency in chemical properties, physical properties, and reactivity. Specialty
MgO is used in the manufacture of silicon grain oriented steel for high performance electrical
transformers, specialty ceramics, and coatings.

Specialty MgO is a highly reactive, micronized, magnesium oxide powder for use as a thickener in
sheet/bulk molding compounds, an acid acceptor in PVC applications, and as a curing agent in
neoprene/phenolic adhesives.
