1 The information in the following table was obtained with a spring of original length 5cm.
Load force on Length of Extension (cm)
spring (N) spring (cm)
0 5.0 --
2 5.8
4 6.5
6 7.4
8 8.3
10 9.7
12 12.9

(a) State Hooke’s Law.

(b) Copy and complete the table.
(c) Use the table to draw a graph of force (y-axis) against extension (x-axis)
(d) Mark on your graph the part that obeys Hooke’s law. (2+3+3+2)

2 (a) Define momentum. Explain how momentum is related with the force exerted on a body.
The first stage of the type of rocket used in Moon missions provides an unbalanced upward force
of 30MN (away from the Earth) and burns for 2.5 minutes.
(b) Calculate the increase in the rocket’s momentum which results.
(c) If the rocket has a mass of 3000 tonnes what is the velocity of the rocket after the first stage has
completed its ‘burn’? (3+2+2)

3 Calculate the momentum of the following moving objects:

(a) an athlete of mass 95kg running at 12 m/s
(b) a ship of mass 50 000kg sailing at 10.8 km/h
(c) a tennis ball of mass 70g moving at 80 m/s (1+2+2)

4 The diagram below shows the plan view of a door hinged at A.

(a) Define moment.

(b) If a person applies a force F of 40N at the end marked B, calculate the moment of this force
about A.
(c) What is the minimum force X which must be applied at C in order to stop the door from
turning?
(d) Name the principle which you have applied to solve the problem. (1+3+1+1)
5 (a) Why do metals conduct electricity?
(b) Explain why a double-insulated hair dryer does not need an earth wire in its cable. (2+3)

6 (a) A test car of mass 600kg travelling at 12m/s strikes a wall and is brought to rest in 0.02s.
What is the average force acting on the car during the collision?
(b) A different make of car undergoes the same test and takes 0.25s to come to rest.
Why is this a safer car? (2+3)

TURN OVER
7. (a) What is ‘acceleration’?
(b)An airplane starting from rest accelerates at 4m/s2 for 45s. Calculate the increase in velocity
after:
i) 5s
ii) 15s
iii) What assumptions if any, have you made in your answers to part (a) and (b)? (2+1+1+2)

8. (a) An electric kettle is marked with “230V, 1.5kW”. Explain what these figures mean.
(b) Calculate the correct fuse that should be used.
(c) Explain why a 220V, 100W bulb glows more brightly than a 220V, 60W bulb when both are
connected to the mains supply. (1+2+2)

9. (a) State the advantage of using a circuit breaker rather than a cartridge fuse in a circuit.
(b) Why is the switch for an appliance always placed in the live wire?
(c) Sketch a diagram of a correctly wired 3-pin plug. (2+1+5)

10. (a) How do you set up a series circuit?

(b) Draw a diagram of a parallel circuit. Where are parallel circuits used in everyday life? (2+3)

11. (a) Explain the differences between a complete circuit and an incomplete circuit.
(b) Draw a circuit diagram to show how a voltmeter should be connected to measure the voltage
across a cell. (2+2)

12. (a) Define impulse.

(b) State the law of conservation of momentum.
(c) What is centre of gravity? Explain using a diagram. (1+2+3)

13. The graph shows a velocity-time graph for a space shuttle during the early part of a flight.

(a) Calculate the acceleration during the first 5 seconds of the flight. Show all steps in your working.
(b) Estimate the distance travelled during the first 30 seconds of the flight. Explain your method.
(c) What is the average velocity of the shuttle during the 30 second period shown on the graph?
(2+4+2)
14. The diagram shows a wooden float tethered to the seabed so that it is completely submerged.

(a) State Newton’s first law.

(b)(i) Copy the diagram and label all the forces which act on the float, the rope and the sea-bed.
Indicate the direction in which each force acts.
(ii) The float is not moving. What does this tell us about the forces acting on it?
(iii) The rope securing the float to the seabed breaks. Describe what happens to the float.
(2+4+2+2)

15. A parachutist jumps from a plane flying at a height of 5000m. She falls for 30s before opening her
parachute. Take the acceleration due to gravity as 9.8m/s 2.
(i) If we ignore the effect of air resistance, how fast will she be falling after 30 seconds?
(ii) In practice, we cannot ignore air resistance. Sketch a graph to show how her velocity will actually
change as she plummets. Explain the shape of your graph. (2+4)

16. This question is about forces and movement.

(a) What is an unbalanced force?
(b) Rockets burn liquid oxygen to give them the large thrust needed to accelerate in order to escape
the Earth’s gravity. As the oxygen burns the mass of the rocket decreases.
Describe what happens to the magnitude of acceleration of a rocket as it burns fuel. (2+2)
