Lesson Idea Name: Types of Precipitation

Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): 1st
Content Standard Addressed: S1E1. Obtain evaluate, and communicate weather data to identify weather
patterns.
b. Ask questions to identify forms of precipitation such as rain, snow, sleet and hailstones as either solid (ice)
or liquid (water).

Technology Standard Addressed: 4. Innovative Designer: Students use a variety of technologies within a
design process to identify and solve problems by creating new, useful or imaginative solutions.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL)

 Representation: The students will be provided with both video and written instructions. Students can
choose which font and the size of font they would like to include.
 Expression: Since this is a flipped classroom assignment, student have the flexibility of the time period
that they complete this assignment. There are no time restrictions, so students will not be limited to a
shorter time period to work on this project.
 Engagement: Student will receive the choice on how they want to format and create their video.

Lesson idea implementation:

The students will be introduced to the lesson by engaging in a face to face content lesson given by the
teacher in class. The students will be introduced to the different types of precipitation and will be taught
which types of precipitation are solid and which types are liquids. The teacher will then show the video and
explain the flipped classroom video the students will be completing at home. The teacher will open the floor
for any questions or comments and provide students with a printed version of the instructions for this
assignment. For this assignment, students will observe the different types of precipitation they notice for
three days. On Thursday, the students will work in pairs in class to discuss what types of precipitation they
observed, and create a video describing the different types of precipitation they observed. On Friday, each
group will show their video to the class and the class will have a whole group discussion about what the
precipitation was like the past few days.
Student learning will be assessed by the teacher determining if the students correctly observed the
precipitation and made a video describing their observations. The final product will be used to inform learning
by having each group share their videos to the class and participating in a whole class discussion. I will extend
learning to a higher learning level by having the students create another video and respond to the classmates’

videos. I will provide feedback to each group in a form of written feedback.
Importance of technology:
The use of a multimedia authoring tool is critical for this project because it is the most effective way for
students to complete this assignment. Students will still be able to observe precipitation and work with a
partner to discuss what they have observed, but they might not be able to create a video to share their
observations with the class. The use of technology helps students to express their thoughts without being
scared to speak in front of the entire class.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy:

As a teacher, it is important for me to obtain permission forms from parents for the use of photos of students,
videos of students, and for posting student work to our classroom blog. The most beneficial way to keep
students safe on the internet and keep their personal information private, is to never use a student’s full
name, never post personal information online, and by being mindful of who can access the classroom blog.
Teacher should have a password protected page on their blog for student work and important school
documents. All these guidelines should be implemented for this assignment.

Reflective Practice:
I think that the lesson idea that I designed could impact student learning in a positive way. This lesson allows students to
create a project about precipitation that does not include any reading or writing. The video that the teacher provides can
be beneficial because the students are able to re-watch the video as many times as needed, and even pause the video in
specific areas. To extend this lesson idea, the students could post their videos on the classroom blog and then create an
additional short response video to their classmates’ projects.
