SYNOPSIS
A composite is composed of two (or more) individual materials,
which come from the categories such as metals, ceramics, non-
metallic components and polymers.
Glass fibres reinforced polymer (GFRP) composites are
manufactured by various manufacturing technology and are widely
used for various applications. Initially, ancient Egyptians made
containers by glass fibres drawn from heat softened glass.
Continuous glass fibres were first manufactured in the 1930s for
high-temperature electrical application. Nowadays, it has been used
in electronics, aviation and in automobile sector. Glass fibres are
having excellent properties like high strength, flexibility, stiffness and
resistance to chemical harm. It may be in the form of roving’s,
chopped strand, yarns, fabrics, and mats. Each type of glass fibres
has unique properties and are used for various applications in the
form of polymers.

OBJECTIVES
To perform various tests on the specimen like compression test,
Tensile test, Impact test, Hardness test to determine its mechanical
properties.
METHODOLOGY

Literature survey

Study on various material

testing process.

Selection of appropriate
material testing standards

Preparation of test specimen by suitable

machining operation based on selected
standards.

Experimental determination of
mechanical properties such as tensile
strength, compression strength,
toughness, hardness.

Predicting the application by

considering the properties obtained in
the tests.
OUTCOMES:
 GRP components have been extensively used in
aviation industry. The product tested could evolve
as a proper substitute for various existing
materials.

 A new composite with high mechanical properties

which may be used for structural purposes.
