Health and safety made simple
The basics for your business
This leaflet is for employers and those who want some basic information on what they must do
to make sure their businesses comply with health and safety law. It will help people decide who's
responsible for health and safety, write a health and safety policy, manage the risks, consult
employees, provide training and information, provide the right workplace facilities, make first-aid
arrangements and report accidents, display the law poster and get insurance for their business.

INDG453 Reporting accidents and incidents at work A brief guide to the Reporting of
Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (RIDDOR)
RIDDOR is the law that requires employers, and anyone else with responsibilities within a
workplace, to report and keep records of work-related deaths and serious injuries, cases of
diagnosed industrial disease and certain ‘dangerous occurrences’ (near-miss accidents). There
are also special requirements for gas incidents. This leaflet identifies what is required from
employers and provides updated information about the change from an over-three-day reporting
period to over-seven-day reporting period.

Leaflets (INDG)
This series includes general 'industry guidance' leaflets and pocket cards. They act as a brief summary for
employers and/or safety representatives etc and can also be seen as a ‘starting point’ on a subject. Some,
particularly the pocket cards, are specifically aimed at employees and provide simple pointers towards safe
working practices.
Leaflets (INDG)
You can order priced packs (£5.00 per pack) of most of the leaflets in this series from HSE Books, or download the information
free from www.hse.gov.uk. The number of copies in a pack depends on the number of pages in the relevant leaflet.

Posters
Asbestos building 2008 978 0 7176 6299 9 £7.50
The ‘asbestos building’ diagram featured in several HSE publications has proved so popular that we have reproduced it as a full-size poster.
This version of the diagram uses an illustration of the ‘asbestos building’ to show areas where asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) might
typically be found. The information is aimed at people who own, occupy, manage or have responsibilities for premises that may contain
asbestos. It will also be useful to managers in companies who employ maintenance workers who work in buildings.
Using filtering facepieces 2009 978 0 7176 6341 5 £6.38
This poster provides a visual guide to checking and fitting a filtering facepiece. It is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use and is
biodegradable. It lists recommended pre-use checks and shows how to put a filtering face mask on and check it fits properly.
Isocyanate paints can take your breath away 2010 978 0 7176 6390 3 £5.00
A poster aimed at workers in the motor vehicle repair industry with simple steps to avoid exposure to isocyanate paints. It complements the
guidance in INDG388 Safety in motor vehicle repair: Working with isocyanate paints. The poster is A3 and biodegradable.
Electric shock: First aid procedures 2011 978 07176 6433 7 £10.42
Basic advice on first aid at work 2011 978 07176 6432 0 £10.42
These posters contain basic advice on first aid for use in an emergency. They are not a substitute for effective training. They have been
updated to reflect changes to advice on CPR chest compressions which came into effect on 1 April 2011.
Safe maintenance posters
Maintenance is a process that affects every area of safety and health and undertaking maintenance activities can potentially expose the
workers involved (and others) to all sorts of hazards. These five posters will remind workers of the hazards that are commonly encountered
during plant and building maintenance.
