Health and safety made simple
The basics for your business
This leaflet is for employers and those who want some basic information on what they must do
to make sure their businesses comply with health and safety law. It will help people decide who's
responsible for health and safety, write a health and safety policy, manage the risks, consult
employees, provide training and information, provide the right workplace facilities, make first-aid
arrangements and report accidents, display the law poster and get insurance for their business.

INDG453  Reporting accidents and incidents at work  A brief guide to the Reporting of
Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (RIDDOR)
RIDDOR is the law that requires employers, and anyone else with responsibilities within a
workplace, to report and keep records of work-related deaths and serious injuries, cases of
diagnosed industrial disease and certain ‘dangerous occurrences’ (near-miss accidents). There
are also special requirements for gas incidents. This leaflet identifies what is required from
employers and provides updated information about the change from an over-three-day reporting
period to over-seven-day reporting period.

Leaflets (INDG)
This series includes general 'industry guidance' leaflets and pocket cards. They act as a brief summary for
employers and/or safety representatives etc and can also be seen as a ‘starting point’ on a subject. Some,
particularly the pocket cards, are specifically aimed at employees and provide simple pointers towards safe
working practices.

NAPO DVDs
NAPO DVDs are simply and graphically illustrated using wordless communication – they are particularly
useful for workers who do not have English as their first language.
DVDs and electronic products

NAPO in ... Safe maintenance 2010 978 0 7176 6322 4 £10.00*

NAPO and his workmates show us how not to do safe maintenance with this latest DVD, in a series of episodes relating to machinery and
building maintenance. As usual, there is a serious message behind the various cartoon mishaps, whether it is to lock-off machinery before
working on it, to avoid rushing jobs, or to take care on all jobs no matter what they are – even on what may seem like routine repairs.
NAPO in ... Protect your skin 2010 978 0 7176 6357 6 £10.00*
NAPO and his supporting cast provide us with another engaging film – this time reminding us how important our skin is in protecting our
bodies, and highlighting the various occupations and activities that can expose our skin to damage. NAPO shows us easy ways to protect the
skin from hazards – ranging from cement in building work, through to detergent in cleaning work, to the water and chemicals used in
hairdressing.
Napo in ... Risky business 2008 978 0 7176 6293 7 £10.00*
The film sets out the benefits of good health and safety practices through a number of short stories which use humour to help explain
important risk messages to a workforce. The film is likely to be most effective when it is used in a training environment.
Bring a smile to safety training 2006 978 0 7176 6218 0 £25.00*
Films that can help you reduce risks at work. Features:
The adventures of ... NAPO 16 minutes
Best signs story ... safety signs at work 12 minutes
Scratch and sniff ... chemical risks at work 12 minutes
Clean sweep 11 minutes
Stop that noise 7 minutes
Safe start ... featuring NAPO Ideal training for new workers 2007 978 0 7176 6219 7 £10.00*
This 3D animated DVD follows the hapless NAPO as he starts a new job. A series of amusing sketches show him getting to grips with his new
workplace – not always with flying colours! The film is ideal for training new and inexperienced workers and also cuts across language
barriers, as there are no speaking parts. It takes a light-hearted approach, but there are serious messages here, presented in a format that will
hold people’s attention.
Lighten the load featuring NAPO 2007 978 0 7176 6240 1 £10.00*
This DVD shows how to avoid musculoskeletal problems in the workplace. The series of animated scenes follow NAPO as he gets to grips with
various lifting and carrying situations. These serious messages are presented in a light-hearted manner and are ideal for training people,
especially those who don’t read or speak English well. The clips are short and easy to understand. Each scene points out the problem and its
solution. The emphasis is on engineering out bad practice and causes of strain and injury to achieve more efficient handling.
NAPO in … Safe moves NEW  2012 978 0 7176 6431 3 £15.00*
The film includes scenes about: site safety; people safety; vehicle safety; maintenance; visibility; reversing; loading/unloading. It is about effective
organisation and management and how senior managers need to plan, implement and monitor, assess risks and take appropriate action.
Employees also need to be well trained, well supervised, and co-operate with managers, so risks are reduced and hazards properly managed.

Asbestos building 2008 978 0 7176 6299 9 £7.50
The ‘asbestos building’ diagram featured in several HSE publications has proved so popular that we have reproduced it as a full-size poster.
This version of the diagram uses an illustration of the ‘asbestos building’ to show areas where asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) might
typically be found. The information is aimed at people who own, occupy, manage or have responsibilities for premises that may contain
asbestos. It will also be useful to managers in companies who employ maintenance workers who work in buildings.
Using filtering facepieces 2009 978 0 7176 6341 5 £6.38
This poster provides a visual guide to checking and fitting a filtering facepiece. It is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use and is
biodegradable. It lists recommended pre-use checks and shows how to put a filtering face mask on and check it fits properly.
Isocyanate paints can take your breath away 2010 978 0 7176 6390 3 £5.00
A poster aimed at workers in the motor vehicle repair industry with simple steps to avoid exposure to isocyanate paints. It complements the
guidance in INDG388 Safety in motor vehicle repair: Working with isocyanate paints. The poster is A3 and biodegradable.

Maintenance is a process that affects every area of safety and health and undertaking maintenance activities can potentially expose the
workers involved (and others) to all sorts of hazards. These five posters will remind workers of the hazards that are commonly encountered
during plant and building maintenance.
