Step 1: Have to find the HR person responsible

Hi ….,

Step 2: ‘Like’ some of their shit on LinkedIn, read through their profiles, see if you can pick
something out to comment on, something that stands out, commonalities, interesting facts, how
long they’ve been at XYZ order to set yourself up to ask the person the 2/3 Career Conversations;

Step 3: Gain some ‘Ammunition’ in order to be ‘Connect-ING’: look at the firm’s websites, articles,
videos, podcasts, reviews, awards won, company culture, specific job roles; What’s their Dream
and Problem;

Over the past week, I’ve immersed myself and research XYZ , and it inspires and motivates me to join
your team!

What I really admire about the programme and the team is the culture it has cultivated, with an
open ecosystem of mentor-ship and buddy systems, where they’re constantly investing in their
people. This appeals to me because I am someone who is curious to be learning constantly and
challenging myself, and thus I feel strongly about the personal development aspect of the
programme. Moreover, …

Furthermore, even though XXX will bring challenges to the economy and, I believe it will spark
opportunities that your team can recognize and seize. Given that the programme is developed
around macro-economic modelling, competition policy, international financial issues, labour market
trends, taxation, housing benefits, local government finance, public health and criminal justice- ….
<< find some alternatives/solutions to the possible challenges that can come with those areas….

Step 4: Disarm objections: consider the reasons why they wouldn’t want to work with you;
perhaps show ‘mitigating circumstances’;

xxxx mitigating circumstances xxxx

Step 5: Then proceed with Dream/Problem/Solution and position yourself as the Solution for the
vision of the company i.e. match and inventory job requirements and your capabilities list; show
transferable skills, with ammunition and capability, and ultimately connect the dots to offer value;

In sort, I believe that I am a great match for this programme given that with my efforts and skills, and
coupled with you mentorship, we will be able to implement some positive deliverables to the
economy and help it ….

During my work experience at …. I was responsible for enabling/promoting….

Also, during university, when I took the XYZ module, I was fascinated by …., faced a challenge, and
ultimately and grew to …..

Step 6: Ask the career questions

I see from your LinkedIn profile, that you’ve been at Bank of England for …years and I’d like to ask
you two questions:
1) How did you get to where you are now, and
2) What do you wish you’d known before starting your career after your graduated from….?

Step 7: Then given that you have to disarm their objections and you’ve given your capabilities list,
go beyond what they expect i.e. offer even more value- some sort of recommendation to solve
their Problem or something of similar nature; after you part ways with them, you could ask for any
suggestions or alternatives to who you may speak to, if, the objections are an absolute
prerequisite

If you my mitigating circumstances don’t resonate with you, I’d like to ask you if there’s anyone else
you know who I should speak to, and/or any suggestions that can help me advance my chances at a
similar programme/position.

Step 8: P.S ‘parting impression’ i.e. the parting impression you leave someone with is the one that
will be most remembered; offer value

P.S. ….XXxXX….XYZ….
