Bumbardai:

Page 6-7
Pa1: Full moon is lit and stars have appeared in the sky. There can be seen camp of the gers under
the light of the moon.
Pa2: There appears three gers.
Pa3: They’ve gathered the goods on the right side and the hackery on the left side of the middle
ger.
Pa4: Someone is peeking through the felt door of the ger.
Pa5-7: The boy came out, sneaking to the back of the ger suspiciously, and inserted his hand
through the hole of the wall, removed the back of the chest.
Pa8: His hand is searching for something inside the chest.
Pa9: He pulled out bag full of something from the chest with the smile on his face.
Pa10: Once again, we see the foot of a boy by the felt door sneaking back to his ger.
Page 8-9
Pa1: Sun is rising. A yawning Bumbardai came out of his ger.
Pa2: As lying Bankar in front of the ger come near Bumbardai.
Bumbardai: Hello..? Bankar...?
Bankar: BARK! BARK!
Pa3: Bumbardai: OH LOOK, There is Sumben… Let’s go there.
Pa4: As Bumbardai approaches by Sumben’s blind side, he seems to be licking something.
Bumbardai: SUMBEEN! SUMBEEN…?
Sumben: Gulp, gulp…
Pa5: Bumbardai leans over to Sumben’s shoulder
Bumbardai: What are you licking, Sumben?
Pa6: When Bumbardai touches Sumben’s shoulder, he suddenly notices...
Pa7: He gulps his candy.
Pa8: Sumben faces Bumbardai furiously…
Sumben: UHH…YOU STARTLED ME…I SWALLOWED MY PRECIOUS CANDY…
Bumbardai: Candy!?
Bumbardai wondered with his eyes wide open, as well as his Bankar.
Page 10-11
Pa1: Sumben holds his hip, as it is obvious…
Sumben: Yeah, candy…It’s in our chest. It’s bad for my teeth, so mom rarely gives me.
Bumbardai: Wow! Is it that tasty? Tastier than skim?
Pa2: Sumben leans towards Bumbardai, sarcastically…
Sumben: Skim??? Pfft… It’s like hundreds, thousands tastier than skim. If possible, I
wouldn’t mind eating it always… But it’s so scarce, so mom gives me when she is in a
good mood. Tell me, you have never eaten a candy?
Bumbardai: Uh-huh…
Pa3: When Granny slowly pops out of ger, irritated… they were both shocked… Commented [L1]: Choose another word

Pa4: Granny: Why are you kids standing idle, gossiping in the morning again, huh? Sumben, go
graze the calves… don’t go near the pasture!
Granny: Bumbardai, go collect the dungs, we’re going to ferment a milk. Commented [L2]: Changed from “We’re fermenting milk”

Pa5: The kids rushed to the opposite directions, while Bankar stays, left in wonder. Commented [L3]: Wondering what? Try reversing “left in
wonder”
Page 12-13
While Sumben was starting to graze the calves, he sneaked to the Bumbardai…
Sumben: I don’t want to graze the calves alone, it’s too boring. How about you come with
me, and I’ll share my candy with you.
Bumbardai: REALLY? But…but… I have to collect the dungs…
Sumben: Then, do it quickly. I’ll wait for you nearby.
Bumbardai: Sure.
Sumben: Good. Tonight I’ll get a candy from mom, saying I did a good job grazing the
calf, and I will give it to you. Commented [L4]: Will give you

Bumbardai: DEAL! I’ll do it quickly.

Page 14-15
Pa1: Bumbardai quickly throwing any dung he could find to his basket almost without even
breathing…
Pa2: He came to the ger with collected dungs like a wind…
Bumbardai: Granny, I left the dungs here.
Pa3: Bankar is lying right beside the door, sticking out his tongue. Granny asks from Sarana while
talking to herself.
Granny: Hey, how come Bumbardai came so early, didn’t even put it inside. Darling, go
and pick the dungs.
Bumbardai: I’m going again…
Pa4: Bankar watches Sarana as she leaves the ger.
Sarana: Hey? Bumbardai, wait… in a blink of an eye…
Bumbardai: I’m in a hurry…
Looking away hurriedly, and to himself
Bumbardai: Candy… I’ll get a candy…
Page 16-17
Pa1: When Bumbardai came with another basket full of dungs, Sumben were waiting for him.
Sumben: Aren’t you done yet? HURRY UP!
Bumbardai: …a tad more…
Pa2: Granny and Sarana is chattering inside while Boz is munching the dried curd.
Granny: Livestock’s merit is tremendous. Milk and dairy products all have minerals we
need…
Sarana mumbles to herself.
Sarana: What is Sumben doing? …not grazing the calves… Might get scolded by granny.
Pa3: Sarana comes out of the ger and goes to the boys.
Sarana: What are you guys doing?
Bumbardai: Sumben told me to share his candy if I help him graze the calves…
Pa4: Sarana: Woow, you have a candy?!
Sumben: Yeah, it’s in our chest. I’ll ask my mom when she comes home tonight.
Bumbardai: Can’t wait for tonight. Can’t wonder what candy tastes like.
Page 18-19

Grandma peeks out of ger...

"Why have you gathered around here? Sumbeen, What happened to your calves? Bumbardai, these dungs
won't be enough, go collect more... don't walk around ger."
Sumben and Bumbardai rushed off saying "Okay" when they hear grandma. When they got far away from
ger, they talked loudly.

Sumben: Bumbardai, just fill your arag by dungs around a here, it's going to be noon, soon...

Bumbardai: Okay, I'll be quick...

Page 20-21

Grandma picked dung from dorvolj(container) by fire tongs and put it into a stove. Suddenly, there is
smog coming out of stove...

Bozoohoi coughed, holding his throat.

Grandma: Oh, it was wet dung?! my eyes got worse and can't see things...

Grandma's heart ached and she put her hands on her chest.

Saraana: Are you well, grandma?

When Bumbardai filled his arag and came to the ger, Grandma, Saraana, and Bozoohoi were standing
outside of ger which looks like smoking, looking at him furiously.

Grandma: Why couldn't you collect dried dungs? wet dungs started smoking and made it impossible to
stay inside. Don't ever bring wet dungs again. You were better at collecting dungs... Now you're acting
like running from something.

Bumbardai: Okay.

Bumbardai carried his arag and left ger sluggishly.

Page 22-23

Saraana took the board with curds out of ger to dry it and looked at Bumbardai's direction. There's magpie
raising its head from the back of ger. Saraana put the board with curds on the top of ger by standing on
turned down arag and thought: "Bumbardai said he never tasted candy...".

While Saraana is looking after Bumbardai, Magpie is sneaking carefully to the curds without her seeing.

"I will ask grandma" she talked to herself.

She came inside the ger and said "Grandma, do you have candy? want to give Bumbardai. He never
tasted candy. "

Grandma: Better do your works properly and then ask for candy. There's magpie eating curd, can be seen
from here through the toono.

Page 24-25
Pa1: Bumbardai is collecting his dungs, feeling convicted.
Bumbardai: This one’s wet too. I have to be careful and collect dried dungs, even though I
want to go Sumben.
Pa2: Sumben is approaching to Bumbardai, shouting.
Pa3: He is getting closer.
Pa4: He’s nearing.
Sumben: HEY, HEY… BUMBARDAI! BUMBARDAI!
Page 26-27
Pa1: He stops to look something from his inner pocket.
Bumbardai: What happened to your calves.
Sumben: It’s just nearby.
Pa2: Sumben: Here, a candy
Bumbardai: Whoa… Are you sure?
Pa3: Sumben: It’s okay. I just realized I had one. You take it.
Bumbardai: Thank you, Sumben! Wow! Candy looks so nice?
Pa4: Bumbardai puts his candy on his palm and looks at it with eyes wide open.
Pa5: He put it in his mouth.
Pa6: He is licking it perplexed while Sumben couldn’t control his grimace.
Pa7: Sumben lies down and starts to crack up…
Bumbardai: Is candy this nasty?
Sumben: …Ha ha ha… I can’t even… Ha ha ha…
Page 28-29

Bumbardai: What happened Sumbeen? Tell me?

Sumben: … HAHAHA! … I was kidding. That’s just a rock. I found it from the river. But candy just
looks like this.

Bumbardai became angry hearing this and threw away the rock in his hand. Sumben got startled and
covered his face.

Bumbardai: SUMBEEN! HOW COULD YOU!? You broke my trust and cheated me…

Sumben: Oh come on, I was just kidding.

Bumbardai: YOUR JOKE IS NOT FUNNY! Go see your calves instead of playing on the river beach!

Sumben: Didn’t I tell you I was bored? I got desperate when you were not coming.
Page 30-31

Bumbardai was furious and went for collecting dungs while Sumben left feeling confused.

Sumben: Bumbardai, come back. I will give you a candy.

Bumbardai: I don’t need your candy

Whatever… (making a face) Sumben said.

Bumbardai sauntered away leaving Sumben feeling guilty. Did I play too hard on him? I was just trying
to have fun. Hmm, I’m going to be bored more since he’s not around, Sumben thought to himself.

Page 32-33

Meanwhile, Cows came from pasture, already started feeding their calves peacefully.

Sumben: Oh, my… no way… what am I going to do?!

Page 34-35

Sumben running everywhere, trying to separate cows and calves.

Sumben: Should have seen them attentively!!! … Come on, get separate… aaya…

Sumben pulled from the tail of one of the calves. A cow that stickled her calf chased Sumben to butt.

Sumben: hai hai … Can’t do this alone… should seek someone’s help.

Explanatory note: Mongolian herder kids learn caring livestock, riding horse and grazing cattle from their
young age. This livelihood makes them skillful, experienced herders who are fond of nature and animal.

Page 36-37

Sumben is coming running and Bumbardai is standing in front of Saraana, meeting her. Saraana was
holding Bozoohoi who is chewing curd.

Saraana says: Oh, Hope you collected dried dungs?!

Bumbardai: Yeah I did, I will leave it and go again.

Sumben ran faster seeing Bumbardai and Saraana.

Hey, friends, friends! Have some problem… Sumben shouted.

What happened? Saraana said.

Sumben: Friends, I got into trouble.

Page 38-39
Sumben: Where is a grandmother?

Saraana: She’s fermenting Nermel at ger.

Sumben: You two have to help me immediately!

Bumbardai: He must be fooling us again.

Sumben whispered something to their ears.

Bumbardai and Saraana gasped in shock, their eyes got bigger.

Bum and Sar: What?!!! You let the cows nurse calves?

Sumben: Hush… be quiet! We have to separate them before the dairy time. Sumben holds his hand
together and begged…

If mom knows it, she won’t give me candies for some time. If you help me, I will give you candies,
please?

Saraana: Candy doesn’t matter. What if grandma knows it?

Bumbardai: Take the responsibility for your own mistake, I don’t care.

- You can't say that, It’s not only Sumben’s problem. We all drink the milk… Saraana told Bumbardai.

Bumbardai left without saying a word. Saraana and Sumben have left.

Page 40-41

Sumben and Saraana came to the cows and calves.

- You should have seen them, Sumben! Said Saraana.

- Yeah, my bad.

- Bad cows and calves… said Sumben making wrinkles.

- “I’ll hit ‘em all,” he said and then he picked up big rocks from ground to throw at cows. Saraana held
his hand and said

- Stop it, Sumben. When did the Mongolians hit their cattle? I won’t help you, then…

- How sensitive? I won’t hit ‘em. I’ll just throw the rocks near them to shoo.

Sumben and Saraana rushed after a herd of cows to separate cows and calves. Rocks that Sumben was
holding are left behind on the ground.

Page 42-43
Saraana got a hold of one of the calves and pulled, but right next to her another one was sucking its
mother.

Saraana: Hey, Harjaa … stop sucking… Do you hear me?

Saraana let go the one she was holding and pulled off the black calf but red one she just let go started
sucking its mother cow again.

Saraana: Ooh… how dare you… wait… shoo… go away! Saraana ran between cows, got tired and sat
down.

Page 44-45

Sumben holds his hands together and dived between them when he saw two calves tangled to each other.
He got a hold of them.

SUMBEN: - Two birds by one stone! Haha… But calves dashed off, dragging Sumben.

Sumben: Two calves are strong when they are together…

He got dragged and fell down on his face. Calves have run off. When Sumben got up, he had grass in his
mouth. Then he heard someone laughing behind him and turned around to see. Bankar and Bumbardai
laughed out when he faced them with grass in his mouth.

Bumbardai: he he he…

Sumben spat the grass out.

Page 46-47

Sumben: Are you mocking me?

Saraana saw Bumbardai when she was holding on to the tail of a calf and shouted “Bumbardai, stop
standing there… come help me!!!”.

Bumbardai: You two can’t separate them on the open field… It will be easier to separate if you enclose
them in a paddock.

Sumben: But grandmother will know...

Bumbardai: She was dozing in front of a stove. If you do it quietly, she wouldn't know.

Saraana: okay, Let's put them in the paddock and separate the calves... said firmly. Bozoohoi sat on her
right shoulder when she moved.

Page 48-49

Kids moved cows into paddock without making noise, Bankar helped them with adroit. Bozoohoi ran to
Bankar and sat on top of him.

Page 50-51

Bumbardai opened and held the door while Sumben and Saraana pushed cows into the paddock.
Bumbardai: Gather all of them inside...

Then Saraana and Sumben separated and shooed cows out of the paddock. Bumbardai and Bankar are
standing in front of the door of the paddock. Bumbardai, Saraana, and Sumben have separated all the
cows and calves.

Bumbardai: Okay, we're done.

Saraana: Let's put the cows out to the grazing...

Kids drove cows to the grazing.

Bumbardai: Well, cows started grazing.

Saraana: Let's go home before grandma knows...

Sumben: Thank you both for saving me.

Now he is feeling better and said: "Bumbardai, Saraana, I'll give you candies when mom comes home
tonight."

Bumbardai: No need, We didn't help you for candy.

Page 52-53

When kids reached home, grandma was trying to scare away two magpies, saying "due due". Kids helped
grandma to scare the birds away. But grandma got angry when she saw them and said "Why didn't you
see the curds? Saraanaa... Where have you gone? You three don't do your works and everytime meet up
somewhere."

"Lets..." she said with anger and then suddenly she bowed down, holding her head. Her face got so red...

"Grandma... Grandma..." kids shouted out in a worry. Grandma said, "Go, do your own works" while
entering a ger, hands on her chest.

"Za" Three kids shouted together.

Page 54-55

It's time for dairy. All the calves are tied on the tether and cows have come from grazing. Bumbardai and
Sumben are tieing calves on the tether.

Sumben: Bumbardai, grandma is coming...

Grandma came and gave chair and bucket to Saraana, who stood next to her, holding them. The calf of
Halzan cow started sucking her mother while Sumben holds her knot with a bell. Next to them,
Bumbardai is holding a black calf.

Grandma: Kid, pull back the calf, let me milk the cow...

Sumben pulled back red calf and grandma started milking. Suddenly, Grandma's eyes got bigger and
exclaimed: "Where did your milk go after whole day grazing?". Then she tried milking the another cow.
Bumbardai stood next to her, holding gray calf. Sumben's still holding red calf, his face darkened and
Saraana is holding the bucket, looking worried.

Grandma: This one has no milk too...

Page 56-57

One of the calves just gave watery stool.

"Why does he have diarrhea?" she asked. After seeing that, Grandma understood what happened and
looked at them with a furious face.

"Bad kids... why did you?..."

"You did let the cows and calves meet?!"

She scolded kids with a pointed finger and angry face. Grandma was feeling sick, she bowed down
holding her chest. She started having dizziness and kneeled down without finishing her sentence. Kids
gathered around grandma feeling worried. Grandma got so worse, she laid down and closed her eyes.
Kids worried but don't know what to do.

"Grandma... grandma... "

Page 58-59

On the left bed, Saraana is putting a compress on grandma's head and Bumbardai, Sumben are sitting on
the end of bed, feeling guilty.

Saraana: Are you feeling better, grandma?

Grandma: It's getting better now.

Sumben started crying, shedding tears, Bumbardai looks pale.

Sumben: Sorry, grandma... I'm so sorry. We didn't tell you thinking you'll be angry. it's all my fault..."

Grandma looked at Sumben, "What can we do since it's already happened? What's not right is that you
tried to hide and cheat!"

"Cheating is really wrong, my children. Don't ever cheat someone again. Do you understand?" Sumben,
Saraana and Bumbardai are looking at her with guilt and said: "Okay, grandma".

Page 60-61

Grandma took out something wrapped in cloth from wardrobe...

Saraana and Bozoohoi are looking at grandma regardingly.

Grandma:

She handed wrapped thing to Saraana and said: "Open it".

Saraana opened the wrap and kids looked with excitement wondering what's inside.

"Wow, candy..." Saraana said.

"Wow, you had a candy?" Sumben asked.

"Candy?" questioned in surprise.

Grandma cheered up with a smile on her face...

Grandma: Awww... how easily you become happy... share equally my dear kids...

Page 62-63

On the two sides of Bumbardai, Saraana, Sumben and Bozoohoi are eating candy with pleasure while
Bumbardai staring at it continuously. He carefully brought his candy closer to his mouth and put it inside.
Then he started tasting it with his eyes closed. Now, He's feeling happy with excitement on his face.
