One day, a river overflowed and flooded a small village. The villagers only had time to gather their
children and some animals. Then, they fled to higher ground. The water rushed into the houses and
washed away all their belongings.

Among the items carried away in the floodwaters were two jars. One was made of brass and the other of
porcelain. The jars moved up and down in the water. They travelled for many days to places they had
never been before. Then, one day, the water became calm. The jars were now floating in a stream.

The brass jar was rocking from side to side. It was heavy and could not stay afloat easily. It saw the
porcelain jar and said, ‘Come closer! We can help each other stay afloat. I will protect you so do not be
afraid.

The porcelain jar was much lighter and could stay afloat easily without any help. ‘ It is very nice of you to
offer but your kindness might do more damage. Your brass handle may knock a hole in my thin porcelain
body. Better safe than sorry.

Then, a gentle wave carried the porcelain jar away.
