Evaluation

You are required to complete a final written evaluation of the work you
completed for this project. Whilst you don’t have a production to evaluate,
you can still evaluate your research and planning – helping to further
develop these skills for year 2!

Remember to be specific and highlight which research or planning

you are discussing – this can be done through screenshots.

 Your intentions – what did you intend on making and why?

At the start of our final project I was originally going to be working

with Gemma on a short film based on soulmates, however due to the
covid-19 the rules changed which meant I had to come up with my
own idea fir my FMP. This is when I decided to do my chosen genre of
‘Coming Of Age’. I did think about this genre for a while and if it would
work with the story line I was hoping to achieve within making a short
film. After doing some research and finding out that when creating a
short film, it doesn’t necessarily have to be long with a complicated
storyline. I also felt th creating a short film would extend my
knowledge from previous projects and also I thought that it would help
me for new and upcoming projects next year. It has given me the
chance to extend my idea to the best that I can get it as well as fully
developing what happens during my production. Creating this short
film I would be able to express the emotion and the characters’ feeling
which my target audience could possibly relate to.

 How did you use your findings from your research to plan a
production?

When researching into what conventions I would need to include for

my production and in order for it to be to my best abilities, I felt that
this helped me as it made me realise what I could and couldn’t include
as well as what I would be able to do to make my production fit well
with my chosen genre and storyline. I wanted to make sure images
and colour would fit correctly with my genre ‘coming of age’ as it feel
that it is a topic many teenagers and young adults can relate to when
growing up and how difficult it can be. For my storyline I wanted there
to be a connection between the two girls and I wanted my audience to
realise that you don’t have to have all the money in the world or a
perfect lifestyle to be a good person. I wanted to do this as I feel that
many teens as well as young adults suffer with things like this and
I want people to realise that it is okay

 Why would your production have met the needs of your target
audience?

I decided for my production to be aimed towards 16-24-year-old

females and males as from my research I found out that 12-18 year
olds are the primary target audience in the ‘Coming of age’ genre.
However, as I feel that my genre is appealing to teens and young
adults and this genre is not really well known I decided to aim my
target audience from 16-24 as I felt this is the stage of teenage and
young adult hood where things can be hard for example collage/work
and growing of you as a person. Also, as I planned to post my
production on YouTube, Instagram and Facebook I found that the
majority are aged between 15-24 for YouTube, 18-24 for Instagram
and also 18-24 for Facebook.

 What codes and conventions did you plan into your production?

For my production I decided to include mostly easy and

understandable codes and conventions of the coming of age genre.
One of the conventions that is easy to understand is when Chloe and
Jessica meet the day after the incident and I have used the location of
a river side on a sunny day to show positivity and happiness for the
two girls. The bright colours such as the bright blue for the sky imply
that it is associated with nature as well as being related wit health and
healing as it produces a calm gentle effect. I wanted this to be shown
when the two girls met as I felt that they had a lot in common whether
they came from different families or family backgrounds there is
something that makes their friendship click.

 How effective do you feel your planning materials are? Could they be
used by another person to produce your project? If not, what could be
improved?

I think that my planning material are in a way effective however, I feel

that if someone who couldn’t relate or understand what I have been
trying to get across in my production I don’t think it would be
interesting or appealing for them. For that reason I feel that I could
have expanded further on the audience and who may be able to
understand my chosen genre, however this genre isn’t very well
known therefore I also feel that if it was more known to the young
target audience it would be much easier to understand. I do also think
think some of my research could be much more detailed however I did
struggle to find information that was highly in detail.
 What were the strengths and weaknesses of the work you
completed?

I think that one of the main strengths of the work that I have
completed was my target audience research as I feel that I have been
able to find more out about my chosen genre when working with who
my target audience is and what would be expected for a short film
with this genre. I do feel that I could have spent more time on my
research into the analysis of my short film examples as I feel that I
didn’t go into detail enough with them and I don’t feel they make
enough sense. I do also feel that my research into the history of short
film was somewhat successful as I feel I went into detail and explained
as much as I could about the history of short films.

 What areas do you feel you need to improve on most in second year?

The areas that I need to improve on the most in second year would be
making sure that I have detailed paragraphs when doing research and to
get as much information as possible and also making sure it’s to my highest
standards. I do also feel that I need to improve of writing my scripts and
making sure I include every part of my storyline. However, I do struggle with
my scripts and keeping on track of my ideas, as well as this I need to work
on my story boards and to not miss any parts of the storyline out to cause it
to not make sense.
