KV1 This Warm Up builds on the content we covered during last Friday's lesson. All of these expressions should be
review. The students will have 3 minutes to work on their own, and I am giving myself another 3 minutes to go
over the solutions with them.

KV2 The purpose of this slide is to review the terminology we covered last Friday and build off of the concepts we
covered during the Warm Up. This is meant to prepare students for the more challenging expression translation
examples we cover in this lesson. I am only giving this 2 minutes.

Translating Scenarios Into

Mathematical Expressions

1. Nikhai ate lunch at Chipotle. He had a

sofritas salad that had t grams of
protein, c grams of carbohydrates, and
16 grams of sugar.

2. He also had an apple juice at lunch.

That apple juice had 20 fewer grams of
protein than the salad, two times as
many carbohydrates as the salad, and
3 times as much sugar as the salad.
Slide 3

KV3 The plan here is to go over two of these together and then have the students attempt the other two on their
own. I am allotting 10 minutes for this portion.

Group Activity Objectives and Instructions

• Create 4 of your own scenarios that can be translated into
mathematical expressions.
• You cannot use the words add, subtract, multiply, or divide.
• At least 2 of the scenarios you create must result in an
expression that has 3 or more terms.
• After finishing your story, you must write out the
mathematical expressions for each of your scenarios.
• Your scenarios and corresponding mathematical expressions
must be written in Google Docs and submitted on Google
Classroom.

KV5 My plan is to take no more than 3 minutes to go over these directions.

• Select someone at your table to be the Spokesperson, the Data Analyst, the Creative Director, and the
Technical Writer.
• Everyone, regardless of role must contribute to the development of the scenarios.
• If you don’t have 4 people in your group, someone can have more than one role.

KV7 I thought adding this rubric might help add some accountability to the students and prompt them to give a
serious effort here.
Kwesi Vincent, 1/21/2020

KV8 My plan is to give them 12 minutes to work, then allocate 15 minutes for the groups to present their stories. This
should leave about 3 minutes for them to pack up and ready themselves to leave.
Kwesi Vincent, 1/21/2020

KV9 If any portion of the lesson runs long, I can cut the group read out and have them present their short stories
tomorrow.
