Tiles
There are four types of tiles so far in F4.
Htiles that are 128x128
Mtiles (64x64)
LTiles (32x32)
TTiles (16x16)
Each tile can be declined in the 4 resolutions. Currently, we only modify Htiles since the
lower resolution ones tend to be unused due to the computer power we have at our disposal at
the moment.
Different projects exist so far to increase the tiles resolution above 128 and we’ve already
seen 256 or even 512 tiles.
All 128 tiles relative to airbase are named HBASExxx.pcx where xxx stands for a reference
number.
For a same objective (in our case, read airbase) tiles can ha ve different colours to allow a
good blend with the surrounding tiles. We have three main kinds of tiles in F4:
FARM
FORREST
RIVER (that I mistakenly called GRASS in my images)
There are others kinds such as CITY or COAST but there are isolated as we’ll see farther.
What does it all means?
Let’s take a simple example: a 12_30 airbase. That airbase needs 6 tiles to lay on.
There are plenty of such airbases scattered around Korea and in different environment. To
blend one particular 12_30 airbase in it’s surroundings, we have three set of tiles with
different colours: FARM, RIVER(Grass) and FORREST.
Airbases in F4
In our Falcon World, not all airbase layouts are available. We can only use the layouts
originally created by MPS for Korea. It means that the terrain makers need to find
compromise when placing and orienting a new airbase. (Aviano in real life is 23/05 but that is
not possible in F4 and a compromise had to be found: 21/03)
Each airbase layout has its own objective ID and use a defined set of tiles to lay on. Some
tiles are shared amongst different objectives as we will see later.
The first part of the list are generic airbase and the second part are unique (in Korea) layout
that where customized by the MPS team to have a closer to reality layout. The third part of
the list refers to highway strip. Only two orientations are available: Ns: North – South and
EW for East – West.
