Tech Guide: Analog Output
Introduction
This technical guide will provide instructions on how to install and set up the analog output in a
ZM series indicator. The Analog Option is P/N: AWT05-505632

Supplements
ZM3xx Service Manual

Installation
Install the Analog output option PCB following the instructions supplied with the option kit or
refer to the appropriate Service manual. Set the jumpers P2 thru P8 for the desired current or
voltage output using the chart below. Connect the appropriate terminals on TB5 for voltage or
current output to the PLC or other analog input device. TB5 - 2 is Ground for Voltage outputs or
Current Return for Current outputs. Refer to the Min/Max Load Resistance ratings noted in the
Analog Output Chart.

Setup Procedure
1. Press and hold F1 until PASS is displayed…release F1 > 0 is displayed
2. Enter 3 0 8 8 and press ZERO > BUSY is displayed and then SETUP
3. Press SELECT > CALIB is displayed
4. Press UNITS until > PORTS is displayed
5. Press SELECT > SERIAL is displayed
6. Press PRINT > OPTIONS is displayed
7. Press SELECT > BUS 1 is displayed
8. Press SELECT > ENABLE is displayed
9. Press SELECT > OFF is displayed. If ON is displayed continue to step 11
10. Press UNITS > ON is displayed
11. Press ZERO > ENABLE is displayed
12. Press UNITS > AN.OUT is displayed
The LO and HI settings set the output range of operation for the selected system parameter
Initial default settings: LO = 0 and HI = 5000 (default capacity of the indicator)
13. Press SELECT > LO is displayed
14. Press SELECT > previous value is displayed. Enter the minimum value where the analog
output signal range begins. Typically LO = 0 but any value can be entered to set the starting
point for the minimum analog output signal
15. Press ZERO > LO is displayed
16. Press UNITS > HI is displayed.
17. Press SELECT > previous value is displayed. Enter the maximum value where the analog
output signal range ends. Typically HI = the capacity of the scale but any value can be
entered to set the end point for the maximum analog output signal.
18. Press ZERO > HI is displayed

Analog Output Calibration Procedure

1. From the previous step in the Setup procedure press UNITS > CAL is displayed.
2. Ideally you should directly connect the analog input device to the Analog Option card to
calibrate the analog output, but a digital multimeter can also be used to establish the initial
calibration. Fine adjustments can then be made when connected to the user instrument.
3. Press SELECT > ZERO is displayed. Always perform the ZERO calibration prior to the
SPAN adjustment
4. Use the following keys to adjust the analog output signal during the Zero and Span
calibration
TARE will add +0.1 % SELECT will subtract -0.1 %
PRINT will add +5.0 % UNITS will subtract -5.0 %

When setting the ZERO adjustment approach the analog zero setting from the positive side
of zero
Example: On a 4 to 20 mA adjustment, make the necessary adjustments until just slightly
above 4.00 mA. Then press the SELECT key until the external device indicates 4.00 mA. Do
not press SELECT again as this may cause non-linear readings at intermediate weight
values
5. Press ZERO > ZERO is displayed
6. Press UNITS > SPAN is displayed.
When setting the SPAN adjustment approach the analog span setting from the low side of
span
Example: On a 4 to 20 mA adjustment, make the necessary adjustments until just slightly
below 20.00 mA. Then press the TARE key until the external device indicates 20.00 mA. Do
not press TARE again as this may cause non-linear readings at intermediate weight values
NOTE: It is recommended to re-check the Zero calibration setting if significant adjustments
were made during the Span calibration to insure proper adjustment
7. Press ZERO > SPAN is displayed
8. Press TARE until OPTIONS is displayed

Analog Output Protocol Setup

To complete the configuration requires setup of a protocol in the PORTS > PROTCL menu
to output the desired scale information to the Analog Option port. Use any available protocol
PROT 1 thru 5
1. From the previous step in Calibration procedure press UNITS until PROT is displayed.
2. Perform the required steps to setup a protocol with the following settings
a. TYPE x = B-CAST provides continuous output
b. BIND x = OPTION protocol settings apply to the Analog option card
c. ATTR x > PRNFT = 32 a pre-defined print format for the analog option
d. ATTR x > INHIB = OFF continuous output not disabled by motion settings
e. ATTR x > RATE = 20 output data at the fastest rate setting
3. After completing the above protocol setup press TARE until SAVE NO is displayed
4. Press UNITS > SAVEYES is displayed
5. Press ZERO > BUSY is displayed. The indicator will reboot and return to normal weighing

Analog Output Print Format 32 > Displayed Wt (default)

Print format 32 uses a single print token or variable for Analog output. The default variable is the
displayed weight value. No units of measure or carriage return are required as the Analog
Option only uses the weight (or other variable) value to convert to the analog signal
Using Gross or Net weight
The displayed weight will change if Tare weight is used and would affect the analog output
value. Gross or Net weight can be used to control the Analog output
Access the SETUP > PORTS > P.F.EDIT > PRNFT32 menu
Change the character 1,t = 16 (Active Display value)
to
1,t = 1 for Gross or 1,t = 3 for Net

Using a fixed unit of measure

When multiple units of measure are enabled the analog signal is affected when the active unit is
changed. Adding a unit parameter to the print token will allow for use of a fixed unit of measure.
In this example we will use Gross wt as the print token and lb as the fixed unit of measure
Access the SETUP > PORTS > P.F.EDIT > PRNFT32 menu
Change the characters 1,t = 16 ; 2 = 49
to
1,t = 1 ; 2 = 49 ; 3 = [ ; 4 = 117 ; 5 = 53 ; 6 = ]

In Ztools the change would be {T.ACT.1} to {T.GWT.1[u5]}

Additional Notes:
Changing the jumper settings from voltage to current, current to voltage or selecting a different
range will require recalibration of the analog output.
4 to 20mA - The Digital to Analog converter on the Analog option card has tolerances, so each
board acts slightly different. To maximize the performance and range of the analog output card
for applications that require exactly 4 mA for ZERO and 20 mA for SPAN, the 0 to 24mA jumper
setting MUST be used. See the Analog Output Chart for proper setting of P2 & P3. This setting
will allow for full range adjustment of the end points to perfectly fine tune the output signal.
When using a multimeter to measure current, a common problem is a blown fuse in the
multimeter low current input port. Replace the fuse with the recommended type or install a 500
ohm resistor between Current output (TB5-3) and Current return (TB5-2) on the analog option
card and use voltage measurements across the resistor. 4 mA will read as 2V and 20 mA will
read as 10V
