Heather Barnett is a licensed clinical social worker and registered play therapist. She has extensive training
and experience in working with young children aged birth to five and spent ten years at Rainbows United,
Inc., providing mental health services to young children and their families. Additionally, Heather has worked
with children with dual diagnoses, most specifically mental illness and developmental delay. She has treated
children with Autism, Asperger’s disorder, ADHD, anxiety, sleep problems, conduct problems, depression,
attachment problems, adjustment disorders, and traumatic stress. Heather is currently in private practice in
Wichita, seeing children, adolescents, adults, and families.

conferences. She has published a book for teachers entitled Math Perks for Teachers.

Annette Green is a retired AD Nurse from Hesston College wtih a BA Elementary Education from McPherson
College. Annette taught 4th Grade and Kindergarten for 6 years before deciding to get back to the basics and
began teaching preschool. During the past three school years Annete would teach preschool and then spend
the summers with the School-Age kids. Annette has written and taught “themes” of all kinds to all ages with a
prime focus on education.

The Strengthening Families Program at the Center for Health & Wellness and the Center
for Health Equity in Sedgwick County have partnered to bring you valuable information
that you can share with families to care for their physical and mental health, while building

the community to have their health and wellness needs met.

Tonya Bronleewe holds a Master’s degree in Environmental science from Friends University. She is the County Agriculture
& Natural Resources Agent at Kansas State University Research & Extension office. Tonya is a member of Kansas Association for
Conservation & Environmental Education.

Ms. Pam King-Burns graduated from Wichita State University with a Master of Public Administration degree; after earning a
Bachelor of Arts Degree in Ethnic Studies. Ms. Pam King-Burns is the Project Manager for Sedgwick County’s Health Access Project
(HAP), a project aimed at decreasing barriers to accessing affordable health care for county residents.

Aaron Lovelady holds a Masters degree in Social Science. He has facilitated the Strengthening Families Program through the
Center for Health & Wellness for three years now. Aaron has successfully participated in the partnership with four local schools and
the Boys & Girls Club of South Central Kansas, to serve families around the city.

Frannie Miller holds a Master's degree in Entomology from the University of Nebraska. She currently serves as a pesticide safety
and IPM Coordinator conducting educational programming at Kansas State University Extension Office. Frannie continues to offer
educational training for the Master Gardner Training Program, Community Horticulture groups.

Rebecca McMahon holds a BS in Horticulture from the University of Kansas where she is currently a Horticulture Agent-food
corps; working with students K-12.

Food Handlers Training

This is a 2 hour class designed for the Child Care provider. Attendees will learn how to
handle food safely to prevent food borne illnesses. Attendee will receive a Food Handler
Card issued by the City of Wichita Department of Environmental Health which is valid for 4
Session 1 years.

Fire Safety
Presented by: Mark Chairs

Fire is one of the top causes of accidental deaths. Fires in the home account for about 80%

of all fire deaths. When fire destroys, it also destroys jobs and families. The information in
this session will help you to understand your responsibility in keeping the children in your
care and the staff in your center safe from fire. You will learn the proper ways to exit a
burning structure, and how to survive a fire.

“Brace for Impact”: Disaster Preparation for Family Child Care Homes
Presented by: Debra Harries

This session will help family child care providers prepare for different types of disasters

and emergencies (natural disasters, serious injuries, technological disasters, and attacks). It
incorporates activities on topics related to disaster preparation, including communicating
with parents, giving children age-appropriate guidance for responding to a disaster, making

and equipment. It also provides framework for children to cope with the aftermath of
disaster.

Trish Sapien started her food service career in 1976 with the United States Army when she became a Food Service Specialist.
After starting her family she spent the next 15 years working as a Director of Child Nutrition Services feeding children from grades
K-12. She teaches Nutrition at a local community college part-time and is currently working for Child Start; Inc. as the Head Start
Nutrition Coordinator. She teaches children and families a silent but effective lesson on how to choose healthy meals by setting a
good example.

Mark Chairs has held certifications as a Fire Service Instructor, Medical Training Officer, and Emergency Medical Technician for
the past 25 years. His passion is the safety of children and families. This passion shows in the awesome training programming Mark
provides for his clients.

Debra Harries is a life-long Wichitan and has been a registered nurse since 1991. She received her BSN from Wichita State
University and her MS in Family Therapy from Friends University. She has worked as a hospital nurse, community health nurse,
school nurse for Pre-K through middle school, and as a college nurse. She is married and has two grown children. Debra is currently a
child care licensing surveyor for the City of Wichita.

Safe Slumber: Creating a Safe Sleeping Environment

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is the leading cause of death for infants 1 month to

12 months of age. The Safe Slumber presentation defines Sudden Infant Death Syndrome
(SIDS) and Sudden Unexpected Infant Death (SUID), identifies how to create a safe sleep
environment, become familiar with SIDS/SUID and what steps educators, parents and child
care providers can take to reduce SIDS and SUID. Participants will discuss definitions and
statistics of SIDS/SUID and address bereavement issues related to infant mortality.

Tisha Whitehead currently works for the Wichita Area Sexual Assault Center (WASAC) as the Coordinator of
Program Services. Her primary role in her position at WASAC is to speak to the youth community about topics
such as sexual assault, healthy relationships, cyber bullying, and sexual harassment.
Horace Santry serves as Community Outreach Educator for Wichita Area Sexual Assault Center where he
offers Protective Parenting classes, trains MD's to recognize behavioral signs of unhealed sexual trauma and
how to screen patients, presents classes at local universities for social workers and family therapists, as well as
a variety of other related community education presentations.
Dianna Smith, RN, BSN, is a child care licensing surveyor for the City of Wichita. She currently serves as a
board member for The SIDS Network of Kansas.
Beth Reeder is the Director of Staff Development and Outreach for Rainbows United, Inc. in Wichita, KS.
She has her BA in Elementary Education/Speech Communication from Southwestern College, in Winfield, KS.
Beth also has certification in Supervision, Christian Education, Incredible Years: Parent, Teacher and Children
Training Series, Crisis Prevention Intervention, and Conscious Discipline.

of having animals, insects, and nature. Come and watch feeding demos with different kinds

Ruth Cartagena-Ortiz is the Outreach Coordinator Parent Information Specialist for Families Together, Inc.
She has an extensive background in Early Childhood Education. She has worked for the Head Start Program,
Home Based Program, and Call Center Resource & Referral. Currently, she is continuing her studies in Early
Childhood Education at Butler Community College.

Carrie Tiemeyer has over 10 years experience in Early Childhood Education with teaching experience
ranging from infant to kindergarten children as well as being an Assistant Director for a center with over 180
children enrolled. Carried is acting President of the Butler Community College Association of Early Childhood
Educators.

Regina Miller is the Director for Princeton Child Care Center in Wichita. She originally hails from Norfolk,
Virginia, is married and a mother of two young adult children. Regina has over 30 years of experience in early
childhood education and is a KCCTO Certified Trainer. Regina is currently an active member of ECDO, and
serves on the Butler County Community College Advisory board.

Conference Choice:

• There are two conference registration forms. One for Growing with Children attendees and one for
Director’s Chair attendees. Please fill out the appropriate registration form. Make copies if needed.

Growing With Children Registrations:

• For each session, please choose one workshop and two alternative workshops from those listed. You
will be assigned classes based on this ranking and space availability. The earlier we receive your paid
registration, the more likely it is you can have your top choice. (In the unlikely event there is no room for
you to attend any of your choices, we will call). If you would like confirmation of your assigned classes
please include your email address on your conference registration.

Director’s Chair Registration

• Director’s Chair Conference has no optional choices of workshops.

Lunch:

• A buffet lunch is included in your registration fees. If you are needing a special meal, please indicate that

Early Bird Discount:

• Registrations postmarked after the Early Bird cut off date (2/14/11) will not qualify for a discount and

• The cost for Growing with Children is reduced for those who have a current 2010-2011 membership with
Child Start.
• The cost for Director’s Chair is reduced for those who have a current 2010-2011 membership with the
