LUSEG 2019 International Field Trip Retrospective: Irish Zn-Pb Orefield

For many years, the Laurentian University SEG Student Chapter (LUSEG) has organized
outstanding field trips that have brought our undergraduate and graduate students to some of the
world’s most significant and spectacular mines and ore
deposits. In the past, the chapter has successfully run
trips to Peru, South Africa, Chile, and most recently
Southwest USA.  To continue this educational
experience, and to open the doors to a greater number
of students, the 2018-2019 student chapter executive
committee facilitated a trip to the Irish Zn-Pb orefield,
in collaboration with the Irish Center for Research in
Applied Geosciences (iCRAG).

The trip focused on both regional and deposit

scale geology, the specific methods of
exploration for Irish-type Zn-Pb deposits, and the
mining, milling, and extraction processes that are used
at each location. It was led and organized by iCRAG
with the assistance of the LUSEG executives and
Laurentian University’s highly experienced professors.
The trip was open to graduate and undergraduate
geology students and a handful of mining industry
professionals.

Over the course of ten days

the participants explored the iconic
mining districts of Ireland under
the guidance of renowned Irish
economic geologists and premier
scientists active in Irish ore
deposits research. For young
students with limited exposure to
the diversity of geologic
environments and the range of ore-
deposit types, this trip was an
excellent opportunity to gain
exposure to deposit types outside
of the Canadian Shield.

Ireland is a top global producer of zinc and lead and is also home to some of the most
significant mining industry leaders in the world. This trip provided an unparalleled opportunity
for students planning a career in economic geology. The 2018-2019 LUSEG members were
highly fortunate that iCRAG so enthusiastically orchestrated what was undoubtedly one of the
most densely informative and transformative SEG student chapter field trips in recent years.

This trip was funded through the generous support of our sponsors. Thank you!
