Optical Fiber Communication (DET3202)

Advantages of Optical Fiber Communication

1) Enormous potential bandwidth:
The optical frequency ranges from 1013 Hz to 1016 Hz (near
infrared 1014 Hz or 105 GHz) gives very large bandwidth

The metallic cable systems (i.e. coaxial cable bandwidth is 20

MHz over distances 10 km)

Millimeter wave radio systems (bandwidths is 700 MHz over a

few hundreds of meters)

Optical fiber link bandwidth-length product is 5000 Ghz-km

Coaxial cable bandwidth–length product 100 MHz-km

Advantages of Optical Fiber Communication

2) Small size and weight:
The optical fiber is same to the diameter of a human hair

With protective coating also very small and light weight than
metallic cables

Useful in signal transmission in aircraft, satellites, ships
