Optical Fiber Communication (DET3202)

Advantages of Optical Fiber Communication

5) Signal security:
Optical fibers does not radiate light and provide signal security
A transmitted optical signal cannot be obtained from a fiber
without drawing optical power from the fiber
So, any attempt to acquire a message signal transmitted
optically may be detected
This feature is helpful in security for military, banking and
general data transmission (i.e. computer network) applications

Optical Fiber Communication (DET3202)

Advantages of Optical Fiber Communication

6) Low transmission loss:
Fiber cables exhibit very low attenuation or transmission loss
as low as 0.15 dBkm−1
Communication links are possible with extremely widely
spaced optical repeater or amplifier, reducing both system cost
and complexity
Long-haul telecommunication applications possible
Not introduce very noticeable delay, as in satellite
communications
