Path to adventure
TRAIL CONNECTIONS: Start with the Pumpkinvine Nature Trail,
connecting Goshen, Middlebury and Shipshewana through rolling farmland
and Hoosier woodlands, but don’t let that stop you. Explore other trails, spurs
and even country roads, taking you to river trails and wetlands, a restored
raceway and stately homes. If you love beer, you’ll want to follow the path
of a local enthusiast who made three brewpub stops on one accessible
40-mile loop.

EXPLORE SOME MORE: Parks are perfect respites to a trail

adventure. Ox Bow County Park is right off the MapleHeart Trail with
woods and prairie nestling together, all viewable from its observation tower.
Bonneyville Mill County Park near Bristol lies astride the Quaker Trace trail.
Take a step back in time at its historic grist mill and dial in more adventure on
its mountain-bike trail. Krider World’s Fair Garden is perfectly situated for a

Artistic adventures await
LARGER THAN LIFE: The only experience of its kind in the world, the Quilt Gardens
along the Heritage Trail, boasts 19 super-sized, eye-popping quilt-inspired blooming Quilt
Gardens and 22 hand-painted quilt-themed murals in six welcoming communities. In
celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Quilt Gardens, you’ll be awe-inspired by world-
renowned artist Seward Johnson’s epic public art exhibit. With over 50 life-size bronze
sculptures and one monumental, it’s the largest and most significant exhibit of Johnson’s
work – outside of his personal retrospective – in the world. The best part, it’s all free.

RICH AND FAMOUS: Mansions in the past, the Ruthmere Museum and Havilah
Beardsley House weave the tale of Elkhart’s early days of industrial barons and founding
fathers. The city of Nappanee claims more nationally known cartoonists per capita than any
other city in the U.S. and many of their works are proudly displayed at the Nappanee
Center’s historical museum. Enter a schoolhouse of yesteryear in Bristol and take in the
Elkhart County Historical Museum’s historic quilt exhibit like no other. Love Marilyn? Then
make sure to get a selfie with Seward Johnson’s “Forever Marilyn” sculpture in downtown
Elkhart and stop in the Midwest Museum of American Art, which boasts works of another
icon of Americana, Norman Rockwell.

ART YOU CAN USE: All along the Heritage Trail you’ll find artisans who make
gorgeous objects that can be part of your everyday life at home. Furniture becomes an art
form at places such as Legacy Home Furniture in Goshen and Middlebury. From there,
check the cups, bowls and platters from Goertzen Pottery in Goshen’s Old Bag Factory, the
hand-woven rugs, placemats and hot pads from Lera’s Rugs in Nappanee’s Coppes Commons
and the incredible creations of Sonshine Baskets near Millersburg. You’ll discover beautiful
works of art don’t just hang on a wall.

RUTHMERE
The 20th century was full of grand promise in 1908 when Albert
and Elizabeth Beardsley built their elegant Beaux Arts mansion of
brick and limestone at the confluence of the St. Joseph and Elkhart
Rivers. Once the centerpiece of Elkhart society, Ruthmere has been
lovingly restored to offer a window into the Gilded Age. As you tour
rooms lushly appointed with period furnishings, take note of one-
of-a-kind details and world class fine art and decorative arts such as
Tiffany lamps, Rodin sculptures and vintage autos. Ruthmere also
hosts frequent concerts and seasonal events and operates the
Havilah Beardsley House, home of Elkhart’s founder (see page 26).

minutes from downtown’s RiverWalk and restaurants, Wellfield leads visitors
along winding stone paths dotted with charming pump houses and whimsical
sculptures. Vantage points from walkways and bridges offer panoramic views;
shaded benches invite quiet reflection. Elkhart’s newest attraction offers all
ages a unique opportunity for education, inspiration and the pure enjoyment of
nature and art combined. Seasonal events and activities.

Ready for the Weekend?

Yours starts right here …

LOVE THE OUTDOORS?
LIVE FOR YOUR NEXT CULINARY ADVENTURE?
CRAVING SOME SPORTS/LIFE BALANCE?

We’ve planned weekend getaways geared to your particular passion.

Indulge in outdoor adventures that might start with pedaling the
Pumpkinvine Nature Trail (A rails-to-trails ride that connects Amish farms and
bike-friendly communities). Paddle a lazy river (Olympians have trained here).
Hike or bike the winding wooded paths at Bonneyville Mill Park. Take a yoga
class surrounded by water-themed gardens and sun-dappled sculptures at
Wellfield Botanic Gardens. Fitness meets fun on an outdoor adventures
weekend along the Heritage Trail.
Take a taste of the trail. Enjoy downtown dining with the tasting menu at
Artisan, sample craft brews with Sunday brunch at Goshen Brewing Co., sip a
Green River listening to “oldies” at the South Side Soda Shop, binge on candy
you loved as a kid at the Wakarusa Dime Store. The Heritage Trail is lined with
palate-pleasing pleasures! Our food lovers weekend will take you to them.
Here for a home game (Notre Dame is our neighbor) or other sports-
related activity? Make time for some off-the-field exploits. Stop by the
Visitors Center (see page 64) for trip tips, then drive the Heritage Trail
(the audio driving tour CD is free) for some pre- and post-game fun.

Visit HTadventures.com for weekend packages and week-long fun!

craftsmen. Their family owned and operated showrooms showcase

LINTON’S ENCHANTED GARDENS

Often referred to as “the Disney of Garden Centers,” Linton’s Enchanted Gardens
looks as though it is right out of a fairy tale. It’s filled with garden designs to spark
the imagination. Nine acres of outdoor displays feature the largest selection of rare
and exotic plants in the Midwest. Linton’s is also the number one local attraction
according to Trip Advisor and is recognized by the state of Indiana as a tourist
attraction. Linton’s features a Vera Bradley-inspired Quilt Garden. The firm was voted
as the “Best Home & Garden Center” by the local community.

Linton’s “Village of Shoppes” boasts over 50,000 square feet of indoor shopping and
is filled with a large assortment of gifts, seasonal decor items, hand-crafted jewelry,
women’s fashions & accessories.

The Garden Café at Linton’s serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and offers handcrafted
hot and cold drink choices including Indiana wines. Fresh cookies and decadent
desserts are baked all day long.

All aboard! Kids of all ages can take a tour of the beautiful grounds on the Enchanted
Gardens Train and visit the free petting zoo! Guests can experience gemstone
mining, “walking” on water in an orb, a swan paddle boat, a quad-cycle and hand
pedal train cars.

COPPES COMMONS
It’s fitting that handcraftsmanship still thrives in this historic furniture
factory that dates back to 1887. The “Hoosier” kitchen cabinets made
here were shipped throughout the country and put the tiny town
of Nappanee on the map. Today, Coppes Commons houses a
welcoming collection of locally owned shops that feature baked goods
fresh from the oven, bulk foods, hand-woven rugs, custom tea blends,
fabrics, books, repurposed furniture and antiques. Be sure to check
out the Countryside Shoppes showcase and the on-site museum then
indulge in creamy smooth, flash-frozen ice cream made before your eyes
or some red velvet whoopee pies.

DUTCH COUNTRY MARKET

Prepare to be captivated by the old-fashioned foods made by the Lehman family, mom and
pop and all six kids, offered at the welcoming country store next to their rural home. Katie
Lehman’s noodles and peanut butter spread are renowned in Amish Country. There’s no doubt
these noodles are fresh – visitors are invited to watch Katie rolling out the dough.

An observation window also provides an up-close view into the hive of the hard-working bees
that Katie’s husband, Norman, has tended for two decades. You can take home jars of local un-
pasturized honey, 9 flavors of whipped honey made on-site, plus bee pollen, soaps and lotions.

The market specializes in fresh fruits and vegetables in season, sumptuous homemade fudge,
candy, 26 varieties of jelly beans, maple syrup produced on area farms and a large selection of
local and Indiana made foods and crafts. Take time to browse the veritable grandma’s pantry of
jams, apple butter, salsas, pickles and preserves.

WAKARUSA DIME STORE

Candy lovers will never want to leave this sweet retreat that’s served
Indiana since 1907. The Dime Store is famous for its many flavors of jumbo
jelly beans – selling more than 100 tons each year. You can also choose
from 450 types of nostalgic candies that span 100+ years. Favorites
include Necco wafers, Mary Janes, Mega Smarties, Pez and Pop Rocks
or select from a wide range of chocolate and gummy goodies. Antique
vending machines and candy timelines add to the fun. Two locations
serve a delightfully nostalgic and tasty look at what life was like when a
