Path to adventure
TRAIL CONNECTIONS: Start with the Pumpkinvine Nature Trail,
connecting Goshen, Middlebury and Shipshewana through rolling farmland
and Hoosier woodlands, but don’t let that stop you. Explore other trails, spurs
and even country roads, taking you to river trails and wetlands, a restored
raceway and stately homes. If you love beer, you’ll want to follow the path
of a local enthusiast who made three brewpub stops on one accessible
40-mile loop.
LOVE THE WATER? There’s more than one way to enjoy the
Heritage Trail’s scenic beauty. Check out Fluid Fun Canoe & Kayak Sales
to try out some new equipment. Launch from near Fluid Fun to explore the
St. Joseph and Elkhart rivers as well as other lakes and smaller streams with
public access sites. Rather go fishing? Trout fishing opportunities abound on
the Little Elkhart River near Middlebury and into LaGrange County as well as
Cobus Creek County Park northwest of Elkhart.

Artistic adventures await
LARGER THAN LIFE: The only experience of its kind in the world, the Quilt Gardens
along the Heritage Trail, boasts 19 super-sized, eye-popping quilt-inspired blooming Quilt
Gardens and 22 hand-painted quilt-themed murals in six welcoming communities. In
celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Quilt Gardens, you’ll be awe-inspired by world-
renowned artist Seward Johnson’s epic public art exhibit. With over 50 life-size bronze
sculptures and one monumental, it’s the largest and most significant exhibit of Johnson’s
work – outside of his personal retrospective – in the world. The best part, it’s all free.
RICH AND FAMOUS: Mansions in the past, the Ruthmere Museum and Havilah
Beardsley House weave the tale of Elkhart’s early days of industrial barons and founding
fathers. The city of Nappanee claims more nationally known cartoonists per capita than any
other city in the U.S. and many of their works are proudly displayed at the Nappanee
Center’s historical museum. Enter a schoolhouse of yesteryear in Bristol and take in the
Elkhart County Historical Museum’s historic quilt exhibit like no other. Love Marilyn? Then
make sure to get a selfie with Seward Johnson’s “Forever Marilyn” sculpture in downtown
Elkhart and stop in the Midwest Museum of American Art, which boasts works of another
icon of Americana, Norman Rockwell.
ART YOU CAN USE: All along the Heritage Trail you’ll find artisans who make
gorgeous objects that can be part of your everyday life at home. Furniture becomes an art
form at places such as Legacy Home Furniture in Goshen and Middlebury. From there,
check the cups, bowls and platters from Goertzen Pottery in Goshen’s Old Bag Factory, the
hand-woven rugs, placemats and hot pads from Lera’s Rugs in Nappanee’s Coppes Commons
and the incredible creations of Sonshine Baskets near Millersburg. You’ll discover beautiful
works of art don’t just hang on a wall.

Urban dash
TASTE FOR ADVENTURE: Foodies will find satisfaction at every turn
in Elkhart County’s downtowns. Elkhart’s Gateway Mile offers everything from
high-end steaks and seafood at 523 Tap & Grill to craft beer at Iechyd Da
Brewing Co. to scrumptious desserts and pastries at b on the River. Visit
Goshen to eat your way through authentic Neapolitan pizza at Venturi, Kelly Jae’s
elevated tapas menu and chocolate to die for from Olympia Candy Kitchen. Don’t
miss Middlebury’s own gastropub, 41 Degrees North, or Chicago-style hot dogs
from Chicago’s Downtown Eatery in Bristol.
FINE TUNES: Music and theatre comes alive with a steady stream of
performances every week. The Lerner Theatre in downtown Elkhart is at the
center of a thriving arts district. Ignition Music in Goshen has become a
favorite with emerging artists for its intimate setting. The Bristol Opera House
offers community theater ranging from classic dramas to musicals, and The Round
Barn Theatre at Amish Acres in Nappanee is always serving up a great time with
exciting Broadway-style musicals.

RUTHMERE
The 20th century was full of grand promise in 1908 when Albert
and Elizabeth Beardsley built their elegant Beaux Arts mansion of
brick and limestone at the confluence of the St. Joseph and Elkhart
Rivers. Once the centerpiece of Elkhart society, Ruthmere has been
lovingly restored to offer a window into the Gilded Age. As you tour
rooms lushly appointed with period furnishings, take note of one-
of-a-kind details and world class fine art and decorative arts such as
Tiffany lamps, Rodin sculptures and vintage autos. Ruthmere also
hosts frequent concerts and seasonal events and operates the
Havilah Beardsley House, home of Elkhart’s founder (see page 26).

COPPES COMMONS
It’s fitting that handcraftsmanship still thrives in this historic furniture
factory that dates back to 1887. The “Hoosier” kitchen cabinets made
here were shipped throughout the country and put the tiny town
of Nappanee on the map. Today, Coppes Commons houses a
welcoming collection of locally owned shops that feature baked goods
fresh from the oven, bulk foods, hand-woven rugs, custom tea blends,
fabrics, books, repurposed furniture and antiques. Be sure to check
out the Countryside Shoppes showcase and the on-site museum then
indulge in creamy smooth, flash-frozen ice cream made before your eyes
