There are many good reasons for praying in Hebrew: it gives you
an incentive for learning Hebrew, which might otherwise be
forgotten; it provides a link to Jews all over the world; it is the
language in which the covenant with G-d was formed, etc. To me,
however, the most important reason to pray in Hebrew is that
Hebrew is the language of Jewish thought.
The words barukh and berakhah are both derived from the
Hebrew root Beit-Reish-Kaf, meaning "knee," and refer to the
practice of showing respect by bending the knee and bowing.
See animation at right. There are several places in Jewish
liturgy where this gesture is performed, most of them at a time
when a berakhah is being recited.
That's the heart of the Jewish prayer service. There are, however, many
additional prayers leading up to these things and following these things.
There is a long series of morning blessings at the beginning of the morning
service. Some people recite these at home. They deal with a lot of
concerns with getting up in the morning, and things we are obligated to do
daily. There is a section called P'sukei d'Zimra (verses of song), which
includes a lot of Psalms and hymns. I like to think of it as a warm-up,
getting you in the mood for prayer in the morning. Some people don't
show up for services until after that "warm-up."
There are also a few particularly significant prayers. The most important is
the Kaddish, one of the few prayers in Aramaic, which praises G-d. Here's a
small piece of it, in English:
Central Prayers
May His great Name grow exalted and sanctified in the world that He created as He
willed. May He give reign to His kingship in your lifetimes and in your days, and in the
lifetimes of the entire family of Israel, swiftly and soon. May His great Name be
blessed forever and ever. Blessed, praised, glorified, exalted, extolled, mighty... There
are several variations on it for different times in the service. One variation is set aside
for mourners to recite, the congregation only providing the required responses. Many
people think of the Kaddish as a mourner's prayer, because the oldest son is
obligated to recite it for a certain period after a parent's death, but in fact it is much
broader than that. Someone once told me it separates each portion of the service,
and a quick glance at any siddur (daily prayer book) shows that it is recited between
each section, but I don't know if that is its purpose.
Another important prayer is Aleinu, which is recited at or near the end of every
service. It also praises G-d. Here is a little of it in English, to give you an idea:
It is our duty to praise the Master of all, to ascribe greatness to the Molder of
primeval creation ... Therefore, we put our hope in you, L-rd our G-d, that we may
soon see Your mighty splendor... On that day, the L-rd will be One and His Name will
be One. On certain holidays, we also recite Hallel, which consists of Psalms 113-118.

1:1 ''I have set the Lord always before me'' (Psalms 16:8). א שויתי יי לנגדי תמיד הוא כלל גדול בתורה

he will certainly acquire a feeling of reverence and
humility from fear of the Blessed Name and he will
be ashamed to do anything (wrong).
1:2 Even while still lying in bed; one should be aware ב וגם בשכבו על משכבו ידע לפני מי הוא

by a fire which started in the city, or something else המלכים הקדוש ברוך הוא שיש לו להזהר

would get up speedily, then he would certainly not be
dilatory, because of fear of punishment or in order to
find favor in the king's sight. How much more so on
the service of the Supreme King of kings, the Holy
One, blessed be He, one must be careful to get up
swiftly. He who accustoms himself to rise early,
four or five times, will experience no difficulty after
that; (as the Sages say (Yoma 38b):) ''He who makes an
effort to do good, is assisted (by Heaven).''
1:5 If one is able to wake and get up at midnight and ה אם אפשר לו להשכים ולקום בחצות הלילה

2:1 Since every man upon rising from his bed in the א לפי שהאדם כאשר קם ממטתו שחרית

2:2 The first garment which a male must put on, is the ב ילבוש מלבוש הראשון את הטלית קטן

2:3 The ritual hand-washing in the morning is ג נטילת ידים שחרית הוא בדרך זה נוטל
performed as follows: Take a cup of water with the את הכלי ביד ימינו ונותנו לשמאלו ושופך
right hand and put it in the left; first pour water upon תחלה על יד ימין ואחר כך נוטל את הכלי
the right hand. Then take the cup back in the right hand בימינו ושופך על יד שמאל וכן יעשה
and pour water on the left. This performance is שלש פעמים וטוב ליטלם עד פרק הזרוע
repeated three times. It is best to pour the water (over אך בשעת הדחק די עד קשרי אצבעותיו
the hands) as far as the wrists, but in case of ורוחץ פניו לכבוד יוצרו שנאמר כי
emergency it suffices (if the water covers the hands) בצלם אלהים עשה את האדם וגם ירחץ פיו
up to the joints of the fingers. One must also wash his מפני הרירין שבתוכו שצריך להזכיר את
face in honor of the Creator, as it is said (Genesis 9:6):
''For in the image of G-d He hath made the man.'' השם הגדול בקדושה ובטהרה ואחר כך מנגב
One must also rinse the mouth, because of what is in ידיו ויזהר לנגב פניו יפה
the mouth, because we must pronounce the Great
Name in purity and cleanliness. Afterwards the hands
are dried. Special care must be taken to dry the face
thoroughly.
2:4 The hands must be washed into a vessel only. It is ד צריך ליטול ידיו דוקא לתוך כלי ואסור
forbidden to use for any other purpose, the water from ליהנות ממי הנטילה מפני שרוח רעה
hand washing, because an evil spirit rests on it, * שורה עליהם וישפכם במקום שאין בני
and it must be spilt in a place where people do not אדם הולכין
walk.

2:5 One should not touch, before the morning hand- ה לא יגע קודם נטילה לא בפה ולא בחוטם
washing, neither the mouth, nor the nose, and not ולא בעינים ולא באזנים ולא בפי הטבעת
the eyes, and not the ears, and not the lower orifice ולא באוכלין ולא במקום הקזה מפני
(anus) nor any kind of food, or a place that is שרוח רעה השורה על הידים קודם נטילה
bleeding, because the evil spirit that rests upon the מזיק לדברים אלו
hands before washing (them) will cause injury to
these things.
2:6 It is best to perform the morning hand washing with ו טוב להקפיד בנטילת ידים שחרית בכלי
water poured from a vessel by human effort, just as it ובמים ובכח גברא כמו בנטילת ידים
must be done when washing the hands before meals. לסעודה לקמן סימן מ' אך בשעת הדחק
(See Ch. 40 below). But in case of emergency, and שאין לו כראוי והוא רוצה להתפלל יכול
his (hands) are not properly (clean), and one wishes to ליטול ידיו מתוך כל דבר ובכל מיני מים ובלא
pray, one may wash his hands in any manner, even כח גברא ויכול לברך על נטילת ידים
when the water is not poured by human effort, and one ואם יש לפניו נהר טוב יותר שיטבול בו ידיו
may pronounce the benediction: ''concerning the שלש פעמים או אפילו בשלג אבל אם
washing of the hands''. If there is a river at hand, one אין לו מים כלל יקנח ידיו באיזה דבר
should dip the hand in it three times, or even in ויברך על נקיות ידים ודי לו לתפלה
snow. If, however, there is no water in any form ולכשיזדמן לו אחר כך מים וכלים הראויים
available, one may wipe one's hands with some יטול ידיו כראוי אבל לא יברך עוד
material, and say the benediction: ''Blessed art ... for
cleansing (not washing) the hands.'' and this is enough
for the purposes of prayer. Afterwards, upon finding
water and the required vessel, one must wash the
hands properly without pronouncing any benediction.
2:7 It is written (Psalms 103:1): ''Bless the Lord, 0 my ז כתיב ברכי נפשי את יי וכל קרבי את

3:1 It is written (Micah 6:8): ''And to walk humbly with א כתיב והצנע לכת עם אלהיך לפיכך צריך

in purple, I, too, will walk about (dressed) in purple; עבודת כוכבים לא יעשה ישראל כן וכן לא

and also everything that they do, of their customs or
laws, even if one suspects that there is even the
slightest idolatrous intent, an Israelite should not
imitate them. (A Jew) must not cut his hair or let the
hair on his head grow as they do, but he should differ
from them in dress, manner of speech, and all other
deeds, just as he differs from them in knowledge and
opinions. And thus does the Scripture say (Leviticus
20:26): ''I have set you apart from the peoples.''
3:3 One should avoid wearing costly garments, for this ג לא ילבוש בגדים יקרים כי דבר זה מביא
leads a person to pride; nor clothes that are too open את האדם לידי גאוה ולא בגדים פחותים מאוד
or dirty, in order that he will not be ridiculed by או מלוכלכים שלא יתבזה בעיני הבריות

clean clothes. The Talmudic Sages say (Shabbat 129a): לעולם ימכור אדם אפילו קורות ביתו ויקח

order to get shoes for himself.''
3:4 We have found that Torah puts (for certain ד לפי שמצינו שהימין היא חשובה בתורה
commandments) the right hand first, such as, the לענין עבודה ולענין בהן יד ובהן רגל
sacrifices, * and the (thumb of the right) hand and של מילואים ושל מצורע ולענין מצות
the (great toe of the right) foot (of Aaron and his sons) חליצה לכן בלבישה וכן בשאר דברים

4:4 In the lavatory, it is forbidden to think about Torah; ד בבית הכסא אסור להרהר בדברי תורה
therefore, while he is there, it's best to think on his לכן בהיותו שמה טוב שיהרהר בעסקיו
business and his accounts, so that one may not come ובחשבנותיו שלא יבא לידי הרהור תורה
to think of Torah or, think of a sinful (forbidden) act, או הרהור עבירה חס ושלום ובשבת
Heaven forbid. On Shabbat, when (he should) not שאין להרהר בעסקיו יהרהר בדברים נפלאים
think of his business, he should think of some שראה ושמע וכדומה
interesting things that he saw or heard, and such

4:5 He should be careful to clean himself thoroughly, ה יזהר לקנח את עצמו יפה כי אם יש לו
for if he has even some feces in the anus, he is אפילו משהו צואה בפי הטבעת אסור לו לומר
forbidden to say anything holy. One should not clean שום דבר שבקדושה לא יקנח ביד ימין
(himself) with the right hand, for with this one puts on מפני שקושר בה התפילין ואיטר יד יקנח
the tefillin. A left-handed (person) should clean בשמאל דידיה שהיא ימין של כל אדם
himself with his ''left'' which is the right hand of
everyone else.
4:6 Every time one evacuates or urinates, even only ו בכל פעם שנפנה או שמטיל מים ואפילו
one drop, he (should) wash one's hands in water and רק טפה אחת ירחוץ ידיו במים ויברך ברכת
say the blessing ''who has formed ...''. If he urinated or אשר יצר אם הטיל מים או נפנה ושכח
evacuated and forgot to bless ''who has formed ...'', מלברך אשר יצר ואחר כך שוב הטיל מים
and afterwards again urinated or evacuated, and או נפנה ונזכר שבראשונה לא בירך אינו
remembered that the first (time) he did not bless, he צריך לברך רק פעם אחת ומי ששותה סם
does not need to bless except the once. One who המשלשל ויודע שיצטרך לפנות כמה
drinks a laxative medicine and knows that he will need פעמים לא יברך עד לאחר הגמר
to ease (himself) several times, should not bless

5:1 It's written (Deut. 23:14-15): ''You shall cover what א כתיב וכסית את צאתך כי ה' אלהיך
comes from you, for the Lord your G-d walks in the מתהלך בקרב מחנך וגו והיה מחנך
midst of your camp... so your camp shall be holy, that קדוש ולא יראה בך ערות דבר וגו
He not see in you any unclean thing...'', from this מכאן למדו רבותינו זכרונם לברכה
learned our Rabbis, may their memory be for a blessing, שבכל מקום אשר ה' אלהינו מתהלך עמנו
that in any place that the Lord our G-d walks with us, דהיינו כשאנו עוסקים בדבר שבקדושה
that is, when we are busy with some holy task, כגון קריאת שמע תפלה תורה
such as the reading of the Shema, prayer, (the study וכדומה צריך להיות המחנה קדוש
of) the Torah, and the like, it is necessary that the place שלא תהא צואה מגולה שם ושלא יראה
be holy, and that there will not be any uncovered דבר ערוה כנגד פניו של אדם הקורא או
excrement there, and that there will not be visible any מתפלל
unseemly object, in plain view of one who reads or
prays.
5:2 Even to think of some holy matter, in a place (of) ואפילו להרהר בדברי קדושה במקום ב
excrement or urine, or anything that smells bad, is צואה או מי רגלים או כל דבר שהוא
forbidden, until one covers it, as it is said (Deut. מסריח אסור עד שיכסה אותה כמו
23:14): ''And you shall cover what comes from you.'' שנאמר וכסית את צאתך או שיטיל
One can pour into urine from one time (of urinating), a לתוך מי רגלים של פעם אחת רביעית מים
revi'it of water. * It doesn't matter that (the urine) was לא שנא היו הם בכלי תחלה ונותן
in a container already and the water is put on it, and it עליהם מים ולא שנא היו המים בכלי
doesn't matter that the water was in a container already. תחלה ואם היו מי הרגלים בעביט
If the urine was in a chamberpot which is specifically המיוחד להן לא מהני להו מים כדלקמן
for this, it doesn't help to (pour) water (into it) (see סעיף י''ג ולמי רגלים של שני פעמים
section 13, below). For urine from two times, one צריכין ב' רביעית מים וכן לעולם
needs two revi'im of water, and so on. Even if (the ואפילו אם נבלעו מי הרגלים כל שיש
ground or a garment) absorbed the urine, whilst there שם עדיין קצת לחלוחית מהם צריך
is there still some dampness from it, one needs to לשפוך שם מים
pour there water.

5:3 If there is excrement on (any part of) one's body, ג אם יש צואה על בשרו אף על פי
although it is covered with one's garments, one is not שמכוסה בבגדיו אסור בדברי קדושה
allowed any holy matters; as it is said (Psalms 35:10): שנאמר כל עצמותי תאמרנה ה' מי
''All my bones will say, Lord, who is like You...'' כמוך בעינן שיהיו כולם נקיים ויש
(which) means that one should be completely clean. מקילין בזה אבל הנכון להחמיר ואם
Some (authorities) are lenient about this, but it is proper יש לו אפילו מעט צואה בפי הטבעת
to be strict. If one has even a little excrement in the
anal orifice, although it is covered, all agree that (the אף על פי שהיא מכוסה לכולי עלמא לא
covering) is of no avail, because in its (original) place מהני מפני שבמקומה זוהמתה מרובה
it (causes) greater contamination.
5:4 One must be careful that in every place where there is ד צריכין ליזהר שבכל מקום שיש
a doubt if there is there excrement or urine, we do not להסתפק שמא יש שם צואה או מי רגלים
say there any holy matters, until we have examined the לא יאמר שם שום דבר שבקדושה עד
place. One should not pray in a house if in the attic שיבדוק את המקום ואין להתפלל בבית
there is a filthy place. * אם בעליה יש מקום מטונף

5:5 An infant, who is old enough, (that) he is capable of ה תינוק שאחרים בימיו לאכול כזית

because it was cooked, in the same time that an adult בכדי שגדול אוכל שיעור פרס מרחיקין

It is better, however, to distance oneself also from the
excrement of a baby (who is only) eight days old.

5:6 Human excrement, even though it does not have a צואת אדם אף על פי שאין לה ריח ו
bad smell, and also the excrement of a cat, and a רע וכן צואת חתול ונמיה וצואת
marten, * and the excrement of a Idumean cock, תרנגול אדומי מרחיקין מהם ושאר
(when praying), we distance (ourself) from them. Other צואה של בהמה חיה ועוף מסתמא
(kinds of) excrement of a wild animal or a bird, we אינה מסרחת אין צריכין להרחיק מהן
assume that it does not smell bad, (and) we do not need אבל אם מסרחת וכן נבלה המסרחת וכל
to distance (ourself) from them. However if it smells דבר המסריח מחמת עיפוש וכן לול של
bad, and also a carcase that smells bad, and anything תרנגולין מרחיקין מהן וכן מרחיקין
(else) that smells bad, due to decay, and a chicken ממים סרוחים ומי משרה ששורין בהן
coop, we distance (ourself) from them, and we also פשתן או קנבוס סתמן מסריחין
distance (ourself) from bad-smelling water, or from a וצריכין להרחיק מהן כמו מן הצואה
steeping pool in which flax is soaked, or hemp, (all
of these) usually have a bad smell, and we need to
distance ourself from them just as from excrement.

valuable fur. }
5:7 Excrement that has dried up to the extent that it צואה יבשה כל כך שהיא נפרכת על ידי ז
crumbles when rolled, it is (considered) like earth, גלילה הרי היא כעפר והוא שלא יהא
provided it no longer has a bad smell. But if frozen due בה ריח רע אבל אם נקרשת מחמת הקור
to the cold, since it can return to its former state in כיון שיכולה לחזור לקדמותה בזמן
warm weather, still is termed excrement. Excrement החום עדיין שם צואה עליה וצואה
that is covered by snow, is considered as (being שנתכסה בשלג חשוב כיסוי
halachicly) covered.
5:8 How far must we distance ourself, if the excrement is עד כמה מרחיקין היתה צואה מאחוריו ח
behind us ? * One needs to distance oneself from the צריך להרחיק ממקום שכלה הריח
place where the bad smell stops; (at least) four cubits ד' אמות ואפילו אם הוא אינו מריח
** even if one is unable to smell (it), one should צריך להרחיק שיעור כאילו היה מריח
distance oneself the same distance as if we could smell ואם הצואה אינה מסרחת די אם מרחיק
it. If the excrement does not have a bad smell, it's ממנה ד' אמות ואם הצואה מלפניו
enough to distance oneself four cubits from it. If the צריך להרחיק כמלא עינו ואפילו
excrement is in front of one, one must distance oneself בלילה צריך להרחיק כשיעור שהיה
until it is out of sight. Even at night, one must יכול לראותה ביום ואם היא מן הצדדין
distance oneself the same distance that one could have יש להחמיר כאלו היתה בפניו ויטה את
seen it in daytime. If it is to one's side, one should be עצמו כדי שתהא לאחריו
strict (and act) as if it were in front of one, and one
should then turn aside so that it will be behind him.

5:9 A house where a congregation prays, and excrement ט בית שמתפללין בו בצבור ונמצא שם

5:10 One who prayed and found afterwards that there מי שהתפלל ומצא אחר כך שיש י

suspicious of it, that it may have excrement, yet he להסתפק בו שמא יש שם צואה והוא

prayer is in place of a sacrifice, ''The sacrifice of the היא במקום קרבן הוה ליה זבח רשעים

problem of an unnecessary blessing, he repeats the חוזר וקורא אבל בלא הברכות וכן
reading (of the Shema), however, without the שאר הברכות שאמר שם ואפילו ברכת
(preceding and following) blessings; (neither must he המזון אינו חוזר ומברך ואם אין
repeat) the other blessings which are said there. Even המקום ראוי להסתפק בצואה דאז לא
Grace after meals, one does not go back and bless פשע אפילו בתפלה יוצא בדיעבד
(again). If, however, if the place was not such to ואם נמצאו מי רגלים אפילו המקום
suspect of having excrement, then he has not sinned (by ראוי להסתפק יוצא בדיעבד גם בתפלה
not checking). even for the Shemoneh Esreh his duty
is discharged after the fact. If urine is found, even in a
place where it should have been suspected, his duty is
discharged after the fact even for the Shemoneh Esreh.

5:11 If one had let wind, one is forbidden any holy matter יא יצא ממנו ריח מלמטה אסור בדבר
until the bad smell has stopped; and if it was from his שבקדושה עד שיכלה הריח ואם יצא
neighbor, he also needs to wait. Only if one is busy מחבירו גם כן צריך להמתין רק אם
studying Torah, does one not need to wait on account הוא עוסק בלימוד תורה אינו צריך
of a (bad) smell that came from his neighbor. להמתין בשביל ריח שיצא מחברו
5:12 A lavatory even though it has walls and does not יב בית הכסא אף על פי שיש לה מחיצות
have excrement, one needs to distance oneself from it ואין בה צואה צריך להרחיק ממנה
(when praying), also a bench made with a hole in it, ולכן ספסל העשוי עם נקב שמעמידין
under which a pot is put for one to relieve oneself, even תחתיו גרף לפנות עליו אף על פי
if the pot has been removed and the hole has been שהוציאו את הגרף וכסו את הנקב בדף
covered with a board in any event, this bench is מכל מקום יש לספסל זה דין בית הכסא
considered as a lavatory. One needs to remove it from וצריכין להוציאו מן הבית או לכסותו
the house or to completely cover it. However, if this כולו אך אם הוא כסא המיוחד לישיבה
was a chair for sitting, and is covered with a cushion to ומכוסה בכר לישב עליו ורק לעת הצורך
sit upon, and only when needed the cushion is מסירין את הכר ונפנין שם ושוב
removed and one eases oneself, after which the cushion מחזירין עליו את הכר בזה יש להקל
is put back on it, concerning such (a chair) one can be
lenient.
5:13 A night-pot for excrement or a chamber-pot for urine, יג גרף של רעי ועביט של מי רגלים
if made of clay or wood, are regarded as a lavatory. אם הם של חרס או של עץ דינם כבית
Even though they are clean and have no bad smell, הכסא ואף על פי שהם נקיים ואין להם
and even if water was poured into such (containers) or ריח רע ואפילו נתן לתוכן מים או
they are inverted, it does not help; and even if put שכפאן על פיהם לא מהני ואפילו נתנם
underneath a bed, it does not help; (because our beds תחת המטה לא מהני דמטות שלנו אינן
are not considered as covering), rather one needs to take חוצצות אלא צריך להוציאן מן הבית
them out of the house or completely cover them. If או לכסותן ואם הם של מתכות או זכוכית
they are of metal or glass, and have been washed well, אם הם רחוצים יפה ואין בהם ריח רע
and do not have a bad smell, one does not need to אין צריך להרחיק מהם פי חזיר כיון
distance oneself from them. The snout of a pig, שדרכו לנקר בצואה דינו כגרף של רעי
because it usually roots in excrement is considered like ואפילו עולה מן הנהר אין הרחיצה מועלת
a night-pot and even if it is coming up from the river לו
the washing does not help.
5:14 In the bath-house it is also forbidden to speak or to יד בבית המרחץ גם כן אסור לדבר או
think of any holy matter. It is forbidden to mention any להרהר בדבר שבקדושה ואסור להזכיר
name which refers to the Holy One, blessed be He, שמות המיוחדין להקדוש ברוך הוא
even in a secular tongue, (like Gott in German or אפילו בלשון חול כגון ''גאט'' בלשון
Boga in Polish and Russian) in a bath-house or in a אשכנז או ''בוגא'' בלשון פולין ורוסיא
filthy alley. It is also forbidden to say Shalom (peace) בבית המרחץ במבואות המטונפות
to a friend (in a bath-house), for Shalom is the name וכן אסור ליתן שם שלום לחבירו כי
of the Holy One, blessed be He; as it is said (Judges שלום הוא שמו של הקדוש ברוך הוא
6:24): ''And he called him, Lord-Shalom...'' * Some שנאמר ויקרא לו ה' שלום ואדם ששמו
(authorities) forbid calling one in these places by his שלום יש אוסרין לקרותו שם בשמו
name (if it is Shalom), others permit it, because one ויש מתירין כיון שאינו מכוין על ענין

6:1 Before one blesses any blessing, he needs to know א קודם שיברך איזה ברכה צריך הוא
which blessing it is that he needs to bless, so that at the לדעת איזה ברכה שהוא צריך לברך
time he mentions the (G-d's) name, blessed be He, כדי שבשעה שהוא מזכיר את השם
which is the main part of the blessing, one knows what יתברך שהוא עיקר הברכה ידע מה
will be the end (of the blessing). It is forbidden to do שיסיים ואסור לעשות שום דבר
anything (else) at the time one blesses; and one must בשעה שהוא מברך ולא יברך במהירות
not bless hurriedly; but pay attention to the meaning of the אלא יכוין פירוש המלות וזה לשון
words. And this is (what is) said in the ''Book of the ספר חסידים כשהוא נוטל ידיו או
Pious'' : ''When one washes ones hands, or blesses over שמברך על הפירות או על המצות
the fruit, or over everyday commandments which are השגורות בפי כל האדם יכוין לבו
familiar to everybody, one must pay attention to bless לברך בשם בוראו אשר הפליא חסדו
by the name of his Creator, who was wonderfully kind to עמו ונתן לו הפירות או הלחם
him and gave him the fruit or the bread, to get ליהנות מהם וצוהו על המצוה ולא
enjoyment from them, and commanded him about this יעשה כאדם העושה דבר במנהג
commandment. One should not do it like a person who ומוציא דברים מפיו בלא הגיון הלב
does something out of (sheer) habit, bringing (the) words ועל דבר זה חרה אף ה ושלח ביד
out of his mouth without rational (intention) in his heart. ישעיה ואמר יען כי נגש העם הזה
On account of this, the anger of G-d was aroused, בפיו ובשפתיו כבדוני ולבו רחק
and He sent (us a message) by (His Prophet) Isaiah, and ממני ותהי יראתם אותי מצות
said (Isaiah 29:13): 'Since this people draw near, and אנשים מלומדה אמר הקדוש ברוך הוא
with their mouths and with their lips do honor Me, but לישעיה ראה מעשי בני כי אינו אלא
their hearts they have distanced from Me, and their fear of לפנים ומחזיקים בה כאדם שמחזיק
Me is as a commandment learned (by rote).' The Holy ונוהג מנהג אבותיו בידו באים בביתי
One, blessed be He, said to Isaiah: 'Look at the deeds of ומתפללים לפני תפלות הקבועות

Me.' Therefore, His anger was aroused, and He swore דכתיב בתריה לכן הנני יוסיף כו
by His great name to destroy the wisdom of their wise ואבדה חכמת חכמיו כו לפיכך הזהירו
men, who know Him and bless Him because of חכמים על הדבר ואמרו עשה
(routine) custom, but not with (true) intention; as it is דברים לשם פועלם וכו עד כאן לשונו
written (cf. 14): 'Therefore, behold, I will do yet farther ... וראוי לאדם שירגיל את עצמו לומר
so that the wisdom of their wise men shall be lost,' etc. את הברכות בקול רם כי הקול מעורר
Therefore the Sages warned, concerning this matter, את הכוונה
and said (Nedarim 62a): 'Do things for themselves,' etc."

for a man that he should accustom himself to say the
blessings out aloud, because (hearing one's) voice
awakens the concentration.
6:2 When one blesses, one's mouth should be free of saliva, ב כשהוא מברך יהא פיו נקי מן הרוק
nor should anything else be in one's mouth; as it is said וגם שאר דבר לא יהא בתוך פיו
(Psalms 71:8): ''Let my mouth be filled with Your praise.'' שנאמר ימלא פי תהלתך
6:3 It is forbidden to say G-d's name (lit. ''the Heavenly ג אסור להוציא שם שמים לבטלה וכל
Name'') in vain, and everyone who says G-d's name in המוציא שם שמים לבטלה עובר על
vain transgresses a positive commandment, as it is מצות עשה דכתיב את ה' אלהיך
written (Deut. 6: 13): ''The Lord your G-d you shall fear;'' תירא וכתיב אם לא תשמור וגו
and it is written (again) (Deut. 28:58): ''If you will not ליראה את השם הנכבד והנורא וזהו
observe ... to fear the glorious and awesome Name.'' מכלל היראה שלא להזכיר שמו הגדול
This (we learn) from the concept of fear, that one should כי אם בדרך שבח וברכה במה שהוא
not mention His great Name except by way of praise or מחויב או בדרך לימוד ויירא
blessing whenever required, or when learning (the ויזדעזעו אבריו בשעה שהוא מזכיר את
Torah). One should be fearful and one's entire body השם יתברך שמו אבל לא להוציאו
tremble when mentioning the name, blessed be His חס ושלום לבטלה ולא שם המיוחד
name, but one should not say it G-d forbid, in vain. בלבד אלא כל השמות המיוחדים לשמו
(This applies) not only to the special Name * but to all the יתברך ולא לבד בלשון הקודש
names specially referring to Him, may He be blessed. It אסור אלא אפילו בכל לשון אסור
is not just in the Holy Tongue (Hebrew), that it is והמקלל את חבירו או את עצמו
forbidden (to mention the Name), but even in any בשמו יתברך או בכינוי כינוי הוא
language it is forbidden. He who curses his neighbor or מה שמשבחין בו הקדוש ברוך הוא
himself by (using) His name, may He be blessed, or one כמו הגדול הגבור והנורא הנאמן
of His attributes (an ''attribute'' is (a word or phrase) by האדיר והחזק והאמיץ העזוז
which we praise Him - the Holy One, may He be blessed - חנון ורחום קנא ארך אפים ורב
such as, ''the Great'', ''the Mighty,'' ''the Revered,'' חסד בכל לשון חייב מלקות
''the Faithful,'' ''the Glorious,'' ''the Strong,'' and the ''the ובעונותינו הרבים עם רוב המון אינם
Steadfast,'' ''the Omnipotent,'' ''the Gracious,'' ''the נזהרים ואומרים בלשון אשכנז גאט זאל
Merciful... .. the Zealous ... .. the Long-suffering,'' איהם שטראפען וכדומה ועוברים
''the Abundant in mercy,'') in any language, is liable to בזה על לאו של תורה ואם קלל בלא
(the penalty of) lashes. Due to our many sins, most שם ובלא כינוי או שהיתה הקללה
people are not careful and say in the vernacular, ** ''G- באה מכלל הדברים כגון שאמר
d shall punish him,'' or the like, and so by this אל יהיה פלוני ברוך לה וכדומה אף
transgresses a negative (commandment) of the Torah. If על פי שאינו חייב מלקות איסורא
one curses without (mentioning) the Name, or one of מיהו איכא וכן אסור לכתוב בשום
(His) attributes, or if the curse can be inferred from the מכתב שמו יתברך בכל לשון
contents of the words, for example when one says: ורבים טועים שמו וכותבים יתברך
''May that man *** not be blessed by G-d,'' and the like, בלשון אשכנז או שכותבים תיבת
even though one is not liable to lashes, nevertheless, it אדיע והוא לשון צרפת וביאורו
is a forbidden act. It is likewise forbidden to write, in a עם ה והוא איסור גמור כי לאחר זמן
letter, His name, may He be blessed, in any יתגלגל המכתב באשפה ודבר זה
language. Many people make a mistake with His name גורם עניות בישראל מה ששם שמים
and write, ''may He be blessed'', in the vernacular, or מצוי ומכל שכן בבזיון חס ושלום
they write the word ''Adieu'', which is in the French וצריכין התחכמות והתאמצות לבטל
language and means ''with G-d;'' this is definitely זאת כשבא לו רוק בתוך פיו ירוק
forbidden, after some time, this letter will arrive to the תחלה ואחר כך יאמר את השם ולא
garbage (dump). and this matter causes poverty in Israel. שיאמר את השם ואחר כך ירוק וכן
If His name is (frequently) mentioned, and especially in כשמנשק את הספר ירוק תחלה ולא
disrespect, G-d forbid, then one requires wisdom and אחר כך כשרוצה להזכיר את השם
effort to abolish this (practice). When saliva collects in יאמר תיבת השם ולא כמו שטועים
one's mouth, one should spit (it out) first and then say ההמון ואומרים אדושם כי אין זה
His name, and not to say the name and then spit. דרך כבוד של מעלה
Likewise, when one kisses the Scroll of the law, one
should first spit (out his saliva) and not after (kissing the
Scroll). When one wants to mention His name (in
ordinary conversation), one says the word ''HaShem'' (the
Name), and not as many mistakenly say: ''Adoshem'',
for this is undignified when referring to Heaven.

** { Literally, in the ''Ashkenaz Tongue'', which normally
means in Yiddish. }

someone is being mentioned by name - but we don't want to
use an actual name. The other method is to use ''Reuven'' and
''Shimon'', for example, ''if Reuven sold to Shimon a
goat...''. }
6:4 One should take care not to bless G-d forbid, a blessing ד צריכין ליזהר שלא לברך חס ושלום
in vain; or to cause oneself to bless a blessing that is not ברכה לבטלה או לגרום לעצמו לברך
needed. If one fails and does bless a blessing in vain, ברכה שאינה צריכה ואם נכשל וברך
and also if during another matter one fails and says G-d's ברכה לבטלה וכן בענין אחר אם נכשל
name in vain, one can say after this ''blessed be the והוציא שם שמים לבטלה יאמר
name of His glorious kingdom for ever and ever''. If אחריה ברוך שם כבוד מלכותו
immediately after saying the name of G-d (in a blessing), לעולם ועד ואם מיד לאחר שהזכיר
we remember that we do not need to bless, one את השם נזכר שאינו צריך לברך
concludes (it with Psalm 119:12): ''Teach me Your יסיים למדני חקיך שזהו פסוק שלם
statutes.'' For this is a complete verse (in itself), it is as והוי כמו לימוד ולא לבטלה ואם
learning (the Psalms), and (the Name was) not mentioned התחיל גם תיבת אלהינו ונזכר מיד
in vain. If we have also begun the word ''our G-d'', but לאחר שאמר אלהי ולא גמר לומר נו
after saying ''Elohe'' (the G-d of), and not finished (by) יסיים ויאמר ישראל אבינו מעולם
saying ''our'', one finishes and says (I. Chronicles ועד עולם שזהו גם כן לשון הפסוק
29:10): ''Israel our Father, for ever and ever.'' (which is בדברי הימים א' כ''ט י ומכל מקום
also a verse from Chronicles I 29:10) At any rate, we יאמר גם בזה ברוך שם כבוד מלכותו
should also say with this ''Blessed be the name of His לעולם ועד
glorious kingdom for ever and ever.''
6:5 One who blessed over water and then heard that ה בירך על המים ושמע שיש מת
someone in the neighborhood had died, (then) the custom בשכונה והמנהג הוא לשפוך המים
is to spill out the water (stored) in (the houses of) the שבשכונת המת מפני הסכנה מכל
neighborhood of the dead (one), because of the danger (of מקום כיון שבירך ישתה מעט שלא
drinking the water), nethertheless because he has blessed תהא ברכתו לבטלה ואל ידאג מפני
he should drink a little, so that his blessing shall not be הסכנה כי שומר מצוה לא ידע דבר
in vain. He need not be concerned about the danger, * רע ולאחר ששתה מעט ישפוך
''Who keeps a commandment shall not know any evil.'' השאר
After drinking a little, he should spill out the rest.

6:6 (With) all the blessings, except Grace after meals; If כל הברכות חוץ מברכת המזון אם ו

6:7 A man must bless on every day at least one hundred חייב אדם לברך בכל יום מאה ברכות ז

(lead one) to fear the Lord, and to loving Him and to 'וכתיב גם כל חלי וכל מכה הרי ק
always remember Him, because of the blessings that one וק' ברכות שאנו מברכין בכל יום
blesses. The curses contained in Deuteronomy (28:15-61) מגינות עלינו להנצל מהן ובשבת
are (total) ninety-eight, and it's also written (verse 63): ויום טוב וכן בתענית שחסרים מן
''Every sickness'' and ''every plague,'' which (adds on מאה ברכות משלימים במה שמכוונים
and comes to) one hundred. Now, the one hundred לברכות השליח צבור בחזרת התפלות
blessings which we bless every day, are a shield to us וברכות הקוראים בתורה והמפטירין
and save us from these (one hundred curses). On ועונין אחריהם אמן וגם ברכת
Shabbat, and festivals and also fast days, which have הנהנין
less than the hundred blessings, we make up by paying
attention to the blessings of the hazan, when he repeats
the Shemoneh Esreh, and by the blessings over the
reading of the Torah and the Prophets, after which we
respond Amen. Also (make up the 100) the blessings over
snacks.
6:8 Every blessing one hears from another, when one ח כל ברכה שאדם שומע מחברו
hears him say ''Blessed are You, O Lord'', one says כששומע אומרו ברוך אתה ה' הוא
(after the Name): ''Blessed be He and blessed be His אומר ברוך הוא וברוך שמו
name'' and when he finishes the blessing, one should וכשגומר את הברכה צריך לומר אמן
say ''Amen''. The meaning of ''Amen'' is ''it is true''. One ופירוש אמן הוא אמת ויכוין בלבו
should concentrate in his heart that the blessing is true, אמת הוא הברכה שבירך המברך ואני
which the one blessing, blessed, and that we believe in it מאמין בזה ובברכות שיש בהן גם כן
(explicitly). (With) blessings which include also a תפלה כגון בברכות שמונה עשרה מן
prayer, for instance, the blessings in the Shemoneh Esreh אתה חונן עד המחזיר שכינתו לציון
from ''You favor with knowledge'' until ''He who ובברכת שים שלום יכוין באמירת
restores His divine presence to Zion'', and the blessing אמן לשני דברים אמת היא הברכה
''bestow peace'', we have in mind on saying ''Amen'' ויהי רצון שיאמנו הדברים במהרה

these two things: that the blessing is true, and that it ובקדיש שאינו אלא תפלה על העתיד

which is only a prayer for the future, we only have in

6:9 If one who hears (another) is at that part (of prayer), ט אם השומע עומד במקום שאסור
which he is not allowed to interrupt, he should not say לו להספיק לא יאמר ברוך הוא וברוך
''Blessed be He and blessed be His name''. Similarly, שמו וכן אם הוא שומע ברכה שגם

obligation on this blessing (by saying ''Amen''), so it will נחשבת לו כאלו אמרה בעצמה כגון
be considered for him as if he said it himself, as for ברכת השופר וברכות מגילה לא
instance, the blessing said before (blowing) the Shofar, יאמר ברוך הוא וברוך שמו משום
or the blessing before (reading) the Megillah (Scroll of דזה הוי הפסק באמצע הברכות

6:10 One should be very careful that one says the word צריך ליזהר מאוד שיאמר תיבת אמן י
''Amen'' correctly, and not say too quickly the ''aleph'' כתיקונו שלא יחטוף האלף ולא
or swallow the ''nun''. Also one should be very יבליע הנון גם יזהר מאוד שלא
careful not to respond ''Amen'' before the one blessing יענה אמן קודם שסיים המברך כל
finishes the whole blessing. This is called a ''snatched'' הברכה כי זהו אמן חטופה וגם לא
Amen. and also not to be slow to respond Amen, for יאחר מלענות אמן דזהו אמן יתומה
this is an ''orphaned'' Amen. But rather immediately after אלא תיכף כשמסיים המברך את הברכה
the finish, (by) the one who is blessing, of the blessing, יענה אמן ולא יגביה קולו יותר
he will respond ''Amen''. He should not raise his voice מן המברך שנאמר גדלו לה' אתי
louder than the one who is blessing, as it says (Psalms ונרוממה שמו יחדיו
34:4): ''O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt
His name together.''
6:11 One does not say Amen on one's own blessing, (except יא אין עונין אמן על ברכת עצמו מלבד
in the Grace after meals after ''And build Jerusalem''). בברכת המזון לאחר בונה ירושלים
Even if one finished a blessing at the same time as the ואפילו מסיים ברכה אחת בשוה עם
Reader, one does not respond (Amen to the Reader). השליח צבור לא יענה אבל אם הוא
However, if one blesses one blessing and the Reader ברך ברכה אחת והשליח צבור ברכה
(says) a different blessing, and they finish together, he אחרת וסיימו בשוה עונה אמן על

blessing ''Praised be your name'' or the blessing ''He ישתבח או ברכת שומר עמו ישראל
watches over His people Israel for ever'' or the blessing לעד או ברכת יהללוך שלאחר הלל
''May He be praised'' which is after the Hallel, together בשוה עם השליח צבור עונין גם כן
with the Reader he can also respond Amen. (because אמן כיון דהרבה פוסקים סבירא להו
many authorities hold that even after himself he can say דאפילו לאחר עצמו עונה באלו אמן
for these (blessings) Amen).

Some hold that he should not say them, יש אומרים דלא יאמרם

We must, therefore, be careful לכן לכתחלה צריכין ליזהר
to recite the blessings of the Torah before praying, לברך ברכת התורה קודם התפלה
but post facto, ובדיעבד
if we forget to recite them before the prayers, אם שכח לברך קודם התפלה
we should study something (of the Torah) ילמוד איזה דבר
immediately after praying. מיד אחר התפלה
If we forget to do this, too, ואם גם זאת שכח
then due to the divergence of opinions, אזי מספיקא
we also need to say again גם כן צריך לברך עוד

7:8 If, one is called to go up to the Torah, אם קראוהו לעלות לתורה
before saying the morning benedictions, קודם שבירך ברכות התורה
if he can first say אם אפשר לו לברך קודם
the morning benedictions of the Torah, כל ברכות התורה
and read at least one (Torah) verse, וגם לומר לכל הפחות פסוק אחד
like, for instance, "May He bless thee", etc., כגון יברכך וגו

Every man must also take care גם יהא כל אדם נזהר

with which to enfold himself while praying, שיתעטף בו בשעת תפלה
and he should take care that the tallit be fine looking. ויהדר שיהיה לו טלית נאה
For every religious deed must be performed וכן כל המצות צריך לעשותן
as scrupulously as possible, בהידור בכל מה דאפשר
as it is written (Exodus 15:2): דכתיב
"This is my G-D, and I will glorify Him," זה אלי ואנוהו

One must also be careful to buy the fringes וידקדק לקנות ציצית
from a trustworthy person, מאיש נאמן

because above three thumb-breadths (from the edge) כי למעלה משלשת אגודלין
is not called the corner of the garment proper לא מקרי כנף הבגד
in that all the spaces be of equal size, שתהיינה כל החוליות שוות בארכן
and so in the first space לכן בחוליא הראשונה
where the (number of) coils is the smallest שהכריכות מועטות
we make (the threads) far apart; ירחיקן זו מזו
in the second, ובחוליא שניה
we make them somewhat closer, יקריבן קצת יותר
and in the third and in the fourth (still closer). וכן בשלישית וברביעית
The prescribed length of the fringe, ושיעור כל אורך הציצה
that is, beginning with the first knot דהיינו מן הקשר ראשון
to the ends of the thread, עד קצה החוטין
must be no less than צריך להיות לכל הפחות
twelve thumb-breadths. י''ב אגודלין
For the same reason of symmetry, והנוי הוא
it is proper that all the spaces שיהיו כל החוליות
together be one-third (of the prescribed length), ביחד שליש
and the hanging (loose) threads two-thirds; והחוטין התלוין שני שלישים
we should, therefore, take care על כן ידקדק
that every space shall be שתהא כל חוליא
of the size of a thumb-breadth; ברוחב אגודל
then all the spaces (taken together) ויהיו כל החוליות
(will equal) four thumb-breadths, ד' אגודלין
and the loose threads והחוטין התלוין
(will equal) eight thumb-breadths (in length). ח' אגודלין
If they (the threads) are longer ואם הן ארוכות יותר

It is advisable to make all the knots טוב לדקדק לעשות כל הקשרים
by (tying together) the four threads on the one side בד' חוטין שמצד זה
with the four threads on the other side, עם ד' חוטין שמצד זה
so that each of the (four inserted) threads is divided, שיהא כל חוט חלוק
half on one side and half on the other side. חציו לכאן וחציו לכאן
9:6 If one does not take four separate threads, אם לא פסק את החוטין זה מזה
but takes one very long thread, אלא שלקח חוט אחד ארוך מאד
folds it into four, וכפלו לארבעה
puts it through the hole, וכך הכניסם בתוך הנקב
makes a knot, and afterwards וקשרם ואחר כך
cuts (apart the threads), it is invalid, פסקן פסול
because it is written (Deuteronomy 22:12): משום דכתיב
"Thou shalt make thyself fringes," גדלים תעשה לך
as long as it takes one to walk four cubits (six feet), כדי הילוך ארבע אמות
while reciting the verses: ויאמר הפסוקים
"how precious", etc. מה יקר וגו
After this we may remove it from our head. ואחר כך יכול להסירו מעל ראשו
It is proper to take care ונכון להזהר
not to let the tzitzit drag on the floor, שלא לגרור את הציצית על הארץ
as it constitutes contempt of the precept; משום ביזוי מצוה
we must, therefore, raise them לכן יגביהן
and we can insert them under the belt. ויכול לתוחבן תוך החגורה
9:9 One does not bless over the tzitzit אין מברכין על הציצית
except during the day אלא ביום
and not during the night. ולא בלילה
Care should be taken ולכתחילה יזהר
not to bless over them שלא יברך עליהם
until it (the light) is sufficient to עד שיהא כל כך
distinguish between blue and white. שיכיר בין תכלת ללבן
If one puts on the small tallit ואם לבש את הטלית קטן
while it is still night, בעוד לילה
and did not bless over it, ולא בירך עליו
or put it on או שלבשו
while one's hands are still unwashed, בעוד שלא היו ידיו נקיות
and so did not bless over it, ולכן לא בירך עליו
then when one blesses on the large tallit, אזי כשהוא מברך על הטלית הגדול
one should have in mind to include in this blessing יכוון בברכה זו
the small tallit as well. גם על הטלית קטן
If one has no large tallit, ומי שאין לו טלית גדול
then upon putting on the small tallit אם לובש את הטלית קטן
in the daytime, with hands already washed, ביום וידיו נקיות
one should say over it the blessing, יברך עליו
"concerning the commandment of the tzitzit". על מצות ציצית

If one put on (the small tallit) ואם לובשו
while he was unable to bless over it, כשאינו יכול לברך עליו
then later on when it is daytime אזי אחר כך כשהוא יום

one should take the fringes in one's hands יקח את הציצית בידיו
and say the blessing, ויברך
"concerning the commandment of the tzitzit". על מצות ציצית
If one slept with the small tallit on, ואם ישן בטלית קטן
one should not bless over it at all, לא יברך עליו אחר כך כלל
but upon saying the blessing over the large tallit, אך כשמברך על טלית גדול

9:10 If one takes off the tallit, הפושט טליתו
intending to put it on again soon, ודעתו לחזור וללבשו מיד
even if one went to the lavatory, אפילו הלך לבית הכסא

because according to the halacha כיון דמצד הדין
it is allowed to go to the lavatory with it on, מותר ללכת בו לבית הכסא

But if one does not intend אבל אם היה דעתו
to put it on again soon, שלא ללבשו מיד
but then one changes one's mind and puts it on again, ונמלך וחזר ולבשו
one must bless over it. צריך לברך עליו
If the tallit slips off his back, ואם נפל טליתו ממנו
accidently, שלא במתכוין
but a part of it still remains on the body, אם מקצתו נשאר על גופו
even though most of it fell off, אף על פי שרובו נפל
since there remains on him part of the precept, כיון שנשאר עליו קצת מן המצוה
there is no need to return אינו צריך לחזור
and bless (again) upon adjusting it, ולברך כשמתקנו עליו
but if no part of it was left on his body, אבל אם לא נשאר כלום על גופו
even though one is holding it with his hands, אף על פי שאחזו בידו
because there is no longer any part כיון דלא נשאר
of the precept on his body, מהמצוה על גופו
for, the (intent of the) precept is not דהא אין המצוה
to hold the tallit in one's hands, לאחוז את הטלית בידו
but to enfold one's body with it. אלא להתעטף בו גופו
According one needs to bless לכן צריך לברך
when one puts it on again; כשחוזר ולובשו
If it (the tallit falling off) happened to him ואם אירע לו
during his prayers, כן בתפלתו
at a part which may not be interrupted, במקום שאין רשאי להפסיק
one should not bless then (upon adjusting it), לא יברך אז
but wait until (after finishing the prayer) אלא ימתין עד
and he is able to bless, שיוכל לברך
one takes the tzitzit in the hands ואוחז את הציצית בידו
and says the blessing. ומברך
then all the tzitzit (from both parts) must be removed. צריך להסיר כל הציצית
(because the parts were separated, משום כשנתפרדו החלקים
each part lost (the precept) of fringes, נפטר כל חלק מציצית
and after they are joined together again, ולאחר ששוב נתחברו
they require fringes, ונתחייב בציצית
and if we left on the original (fringes) אם ישארו בו הראשונות
they are invalid because of פסול משום
"Thou shalt make," תעשה
and not use what has already been made. ולא מן העשוי
as explained above in Law 6.) כדלעיל סעיף ו
If one part ואם בחלק אחד
is large enough to wrap in יש בו כדי עיטוף
and the other part does not have ובחלק שני אין בו
(enough) to wrap in, כדי עיטוף
then the tzitzit should be removed from this part יסיר את הציצית מחלק זה
which did not have enough to wrap in. שאין בו כדי עיטוף
9:16 If a corner was severed or torn אם נחתך או נקרע הכנף
and completely separated from the tallit ונפרד לגמרי מן הטלית
and (the severed piece) does not (measure) ואין בחתיכה זו

(then) some authorities are of the opinion יש אומרים

it is properly sewed on to the tallit, שתפרה היטב אל הטלית
is unfit to put the tzitzit in it, פסולה מלהטיל בה ציצית
because (of the detached piece), דכיון
measuring less than three thumb breadths (square), שאין בה ג' גודלין
cannot legally be called a "garment," אין עליה שם בגד
and even when attached to the tallit ואפילו אם נתחבר עם הטלית
it is still considered (in the eyes of the law) as severed. נחשבה כפרוד
And it is proper to follow this opinion. ויש להחמיר כן
But if it (the piece) is not entirely severed אבל אם אינו נפרד לגמרי
from the tallit, מן הטלית
because it is still a little connected כיון שנשאר מחובר מעט
then the sewing is effective מועלת התפירה
to make it considered as part of the tallit itself, שיהא נחשב בכלל הטלית
and the tzitzit put in והציצית שיטיל בו
after the sewing are valid. אחר התפירה כשרות
It is customary to sew on a piece of extra cloth ונוהגין לתפור חתיכת בגד
although the first ones are still fit. אף על פי שגם הראשונות עדיין כשרות
In any event, this is permissible מכל מקום מותר
because one does not intend to free כיון שאינו מבטל
the tallit from the requirement of tzitzit; את הטלית מן הציצית
on the contrary, ואדרבה
one intends to put in better tzitzit. יתלה בו ציצית יותר יפות
But one must take care not to throw out ויהא נזהר שלא ישליך
the original (tzitzit) into an unseemly place. את הראשונות למקום בזיון
9:19 Even tzitzit that fall off ואפילו ציצית שנפלו

must not be thrown into the rubbish, לא יזרקן לאשפה
because we slight thereby a precept. משום ביזוי מצוה
Some people are strict (about discarded tzitzit) ויש מדקדקין
and place them in a book לגנזם בספר
to serve as a bookmark, ולעשות מהן סימן בספר
because, since they have once been used משום דאיתעבד בהו

Similarly, a tallit which has become old, וגם הטלית שנתישן
and is no longer put on for the precept, ואינו לובשו עוד למצוה
one should not make of it לא יעשה בו

9:20 If one came on the Sabbath to the synagogue אם בא בשבת לבית הכנסת
and found ומצא
that one of the tzitzit in the tallit has become unfit, שנפסלה ציצה מן הטלית
and he is unable to borrow another tallit, ואינו מוצא לשאול טלית אחר
and he is embarrassed והוא מתבייש
to (remain) sitting without a tallit, לשבת בלא טלית
since it is impossible for him on this day אזי כיון שאי אפשר לו היום
to replace it by another tzitzit, לקשור ציצה אחרת
and so, as a matter of decorum, לכן משום כבוד הבריות
one may put on the tallit as it is, מותר לו ללבוש את הטלית כך
and not bless over it. ולא יברך עליו
What cases are we talking about, במה דברים אמורים
when it was not known to him, כשלא נודע לו
before the Sabbath, קודם שבת

but if one has been aware אבל אם ידע

The word "tefillin" connotes judgment and admonition, ''תפילין'' הוא לשון פלילה והוכחה
(and therefore the lamed has the dagesh - stress - ולכן הלמ''ד דגושה
to take the place of the missing second (lamed) ) למלאות חסרון השניה
because the tefillin serve as evidence כי התפילין הן עדות
and convincing proof והוכחה
that the Divine Presence rests on us, שהשכינה שורה עלינו
as it is written (Deuteronomy 28:10): כמו שאמר הכתוב
"And all the nations of the earth shall see וראו כל עמי הארץ
that Thou art called by the name of the Lord;" כי שם ה' נקרא עליך וגו
and explained our Rabbis, of blessed memory, ודרשו רבותינו זכרונים לברכה
that (the reference) is the tefillah of the head אלו תפילין שבראש
upon which is (embossed the letter) shin, ''שיש בה ''שי''ן
(the first letter) of the word Shaddai (Almighty). מהשם שדי
Therefore, it is forbidden to cover ולכן אין לכסות
the tefillah of the head תפילין של ראש
entirely with the tallit. לגמרי עם הטלית
10:2 The time for putting them on (the tefillin) זמן הנחתן
(begins from that hour) of morning בבוקר
when one sees his neighbor, משיראה את חבירו
with whom he is slightly acquainted, קצת הרגיל עמו
at a distance of four cubits, ברחוק ד' אמות
and recognizes him. ויכירנו
After putting on the tallit אחר שלבש את הטלית
one puts on the tefillin. מניח את התפילין
The reason we put first והא דמקדימין
the tzitzit over the tefillin את הציצית לתפילין
is that the precept of the tzitzit משום דמצות ציצית
is performed more often, תדירא יותר
both on week days שנוהגת בין בחול
and the tefillah is placed on the other. ויניח התפלה בידו השניה
An ambidextrous person ואם שולט בשתי ידיו
puts the tefillah on the left hand (for every one). מניח בשמאל של כל אדם
A man not born left-handed, וכן אם לא נולד איטר כלל
who has accustomed himself אלא שאחר כך הרגיל את עצמו
to write with the left לכתוב בשמאל
but does all his other work with the right hand, ועושה כל מלאכתו בימינו
must put (the tefillah) on the left hand (for every one). מניח בשמאל של כל אדם
10:13 The prescribed width of the straps, שיעור רוחב הרצועות
whether of the head (tefillah) or of the hand, בין של ראש בין של יד
is no less than the length of a barley. לא פחות מאורך שעורה
The prescribed length ושיעור ארכן
for the head (tefillah) , של ראש
of both the right and left (straps) מימין ומשמאל
is to reach down to a man's navel, עד הטבור
or a trifle above that. או למעלה ממנו מעט
There is an opinion that holds ויש אומרים
that (the strap on) the right hand side דשל צד ימין
should reach down to below a man's abdomen. תגיע עד המילה
(that is most used) שימושא רבה
And it is proper to follow this stricter view וכן נכון להחמיר
in the first instance. לכתחלה
The (strap of) the hand (tefillah) ושל יד
(should be long enough), with enough left to tighten it, כדי שיהדקה
to make seven coils around the arm, ויעשה בה ז' כריכות על הזרוע
and three windings around the middle finger, וג' כריכות על האצבע
and then hold it (by winding around the hand). ויחזקה
If (one) strap becomes torn, ואם נפסקה הרצועה
whether of the head or of the hand, בין של ראש בין של יד
an authority should be consulted. יעשה שאלה
10:14 Care should be taken that the straps be always יזהר שיהיו הרצועות
with their black side out. בצד השחור לחוץ
If it happens ואם אירע לו
that the strap around his head becomes inverted שנהפכה הרצועה שסביב ראשו
or around his arm או סביב זרועו
so that the white side is outwards, בצד הלבן לחוץ
he must either fast or redeem himself by giving charity. יתענה או יפדה בצדקה
Similarly, if the tefillin fell to the ground, וכן אם נפלו לו התפילין לארץ
when not in the bag, בלא נרתיקן
that on the day the Torah is read, שביום קריאת ספר תורה
the holy scroll is not replaced (in the ark) אין מחזירין את הספר תורה
until after completing the prayer עד אחר קדושת
"and a redeemer shall come to Zion", ובא לציון
the tefillin should not be taken off אין חולצין את התפילין
until after the scroll is returned to the ark. עד שיחזירו את הספר תורה להיכל
A Biblical hint to this rule is found (Micah 2:13): סימן לדבר
"And their king passeth on before them, ויעבור מלכם לפניהם
and the Lord at their head." וה' בראשם
If there is a circumcision that day (in the synagogue), וביום שיש מילה
(the tefillin) should not be removed until after the
אין לחלוץ עד אחר המילה
circumcision.
On Rosh Hodesh (the New Moon), (the tefillin) are

removed
before the Musaph (additional) service; קודם תפלת מוסף
on Hol Hammoed Sukkot (the Intermediate Days of

every one takes them off before Hallel; כולם חולצין קודם הלל

10:20 One removes them while standing. חולצין מעומד

and two or three coils from around the arm, וב' או ג' כריכות מהזרוע

because it is written (Deuteronomy 6:8): משום דכתיב

since it is written in the plural, "And they shall be," ומדכתיב והיו לשון רבים
our Rabbis, of blessed memory, explained that דרשו רבותינו זכרונם לברכה
(it signifies) as long as the tefillah is midway between the

the two (tefillin) must be on. יהיו שתים
Therefore, one first puts on the hand (tefillah) ולכן מניחין תחלה של יד
and removes the head (tefillah) first, וחולצין תחלה של ראש
so that whenever the head (tefillah) is on him שכל זמן שיש עליו של ראש
the one of the hand should also be on. תהיה עליו גם של יד

one is permitted to make all the interruptions מותר להפסיק

Before the Shemoneh Esreh, קודם השמנה עשרה

18:3 A person who prays needs to be aware המתפלל צריך שידע
that the Divine Presence is before him, שהשכינה כנגדו
as [Eichah 2:19] states: כמו שנאמר
"Pour out your heart like water in the presence of G-d." שפכי כמים לבך נכח פני ה
He should arouse his concentration ויעיר הכונה
and remove any thoughts that bother him, ויסיר כל המחשבות הטורדות אותו
until his thoughts and his concentration עד שתשאר מחשבתו וכוונתו
are purified for prayer. זכה בתפלתו
He should meditate on how, ויחשוב כי
were he to be speaking אלו היה מדבר
before a human monarch, לפני מלך בשר ודם
he would surely order his statements בודאי היה מסדר דבריו
and concentrate upon them ומכוין בהם יפה
so as not to err. לבל יכשל
Surely, this applies קל וחומר
when standing before the King of kings, לפני מלך מלכי המלכים
the Holy One, blessed be He. הקדוש ברוך הוא
In His presence, one must concentrate his thoughts, שצריך לכוין לפניו את מחשבתו
for before G-d, blessed be He, כי לפניו יתברך שמו
thought is the same as speech המחשבה כמו דיבור
and He probes all our thoughts. וכל המחשבות הוא חוקר
and rise before reciting G-d's name. וקודם שאומר את השם זוקף
A person should not bow too low לא ישתחוה יותר מדאי
- i.e., he should not bow to the extent that his mouth דהיינו עד שיהיה פיו
is opposite his belt כנגד החגור
- because this is considered as proud behavior. כי זהו דרך יוהרא
A sick or elderly person who suffers, וזקן וחולה שמצטער
when bowing, pain בכריעה כיון שהרכין
(bowing) his head is enough. ראשו דיו
It is forbidden to add extra bows אסור להוסיף השתחויות
in the other blessings, ביתר הברכות
neither at their beginning nor their conclusion. לא בתחלתן ולא בסופן
18:12 After completing the Shemoneh Esreh, לאחר השמנה עשרה
one should recite אומרים
"O my G-d, guard my tongue..." אלהי נצור וכו
Before reciting the verse וקודם
"He who makes peace", עושה שלום וכו
one bows and steps backwards three steps, כורע ופוסע אך שלש פסיעות
like a servant who departs from his master. כעבד הנפטר מרבו
These steps should be medium-sized: הפסיעות יהיו בינוניות
at least large enough ולכל הפחות
for the toe to be placed at the heel, כדי שיתן אגודל בצד עקב
but neither should they be large steps. ולא יפסע פסיעות גסות
One should not take more than three steps, ולא יפסע יותר מג' פסיעות
and should begin first with left foot, פוסע תחלה ברגל שמאל
then the right, ואחר כך ברגל ימין
and then the left again. ושוב פוסע ברגל שמאל
While he is still bowing, ועודהו בכריעה
he should turn his face to the left, הופך פניו לשמאלו
which is to the right of G-d's Presence שהוא ימין השכינה
(which is before him while he prays שהוא כנגדו בשעת התפלה
and as he departs from prayer). ובצאתו מן התפלה
Then, he recites אומר
"He who makes peace in his High heavens", עושה שלום במרומיו

He then bows directly in front of him ואחר כך משתחוה לפניו

" May it be Your will...that the Temple be rebuilt...", יהי רצון וכו' שיבנה בית המקדש וכו
because prayer was כי התפלה היא
(instituted) in place of the Temple services. במקום העבודה
Therefore, we pray ולכן אנו מתפללים
that the Temple will be built, על בנין בית המקדש
so that we will be able to carry out the actual service שנוכל לעשות את העבודה ממש
speedily, in our days. במהרה בימינו
The reason we step (backward) והטעם שפוסעין
with the left foot first תחלה ברגל שמאל
is that normally, when a person walks, לפי שדרך הליכות האדם
he lifts the right foot first. הוא לעקור רגל ימין תחלה
Therefore, in this instance, we lift our left foot first, ולכן עוקר כאן שמאל תחלה
to demonstrate that it is difficult for us להראות כאלו כבד עליו
to depart from G-d, blessed be He. ליפטר מלפני המקום ברוך הוא
Therefore, a left-handed (lit. footed) person לכן אטר רגל
lifts up (what for him is) his left foot עוקר תחלה שמאלו
which is actually the right foot. שהוא ימין כל אדם
18:13 At the place where he concludes his prayers, במקום שכלו הפסיעות
a person should stand with his feet together יעמוד ברגלים מכוונות
as in the Shemoneh Esreh. כמו בתפלה
He should not turn his face to the west ולא יחזיר פניו למערב
nor should he return to his place ולא יחזור למקומו

18:14 One who is reciting the Shemoneh Esreh [should not try

- i.e., he should not wink his eyes, לא ירמוז בעיניו

18:19 If a person who remains sitting (near someone reciting

if one is praying in a place אם מתפלל בבית
set aside for communal prayer המיוחד למנין קבוע

and finishes his prayers. וגומר תפלתו

23:3 [Before saying the blessing] he opens the Torah scroll, פותח את הספר תורה
and sees from which place will be the reading, ורואה באיזה מקום יקרא
holds the scroll open* ואוחזו כך פתוח
with both hands (see the following law), בשתי ידיו
closes his eyes, וסוגר עיניו
and says "Bless ye the Lord, who is ever blessed". ואומר ברכו את ה' המבורך
He should say (it) out loud ויש לו לומר בקול
so that all the congregation will hear כדי שישמעו כל הקהל
and respond והם עונין
"Blessed be the Lord who is blessed for ever and ever". ברוך ה' המבורך לעולם ועד
* {In some communities, it is customary to recite this blessing while the Torah scroll is closed.}
If the congregation did not hear ואם לא שמעו הצבור
the person making the blessing, את המברך
even if they heard אף על פי ששמעו
the reader answer, שהשליח צבור עונה
they should not respond together with him. לא יענה עמו
Rather, אלא
after the reader completes (this response), לאחר שסיים השליח צבור
they should answer "Amen." * עונין אחריו אמן
* {The Mishnoh Beruroh 57:1 writes that this is a very common mistake. Thus, those who recite "Bless
you" in a low tone are responsible for causing the public to err. However, if "Bless you" is recited loud
enough for ten people to hear, the entire congregation may respond: "Blessed be the Lord who is blessed
for ever and ever" even though they did not hear "Bless you" themselves (Biur Halachah).}
After the congregation responds לאחר שענו הקהל
"Blessed be the Lord who is blessed for ever and ever", ברוך ה' המבורך לעולם ועד
the person receiving the aliyah should repeat חוזר העולה ואומר
the same (response) (See Ch. 15:10) גם כן

As the reader reads the passage (out loud), הקורא קורא
he should read והוא קורא

The reader should not begin to read ואין הקורא רשאי לקרות

If another Kohen (who is fasting) is present, ואם יש כהן אחר
he (the first Kohen) need not leave, אינו צריך לצאת
but he should inform them אלא יודיע
not to call him. שלא יקראוהו
Even if they call him, ואם יקראוהו
he should not accept the aliyah. לא יעלה
If it (the fast) is on a Monday or Thursday, ואם הוא בשני ובחמישי
even though אף על פי
one reads "And (Moses) besought...", שקורין ויחל
in any event, because מכל מקום כיון
this is a day שעתה הוא זמן
on which the Torah is (normally) read, קריאת התורה
accordingly, after the event, לכן בדיעבד
if he did not leave אם לא יצא
the synagogue מבית הכנסת
is open before him (the person who received the aliyah) היה גם כן גלוי לפניו
even if it (the correct passage) אפילו הוא
is in a different column (from that he was shown). בעמוד אחר
and was further on than the place shown to him, ולאחר המקום שהראו לו
he does not have to say a second blessing. אין צריך לברך שנית
We may presume that he was mindful משום דדעתו היה
of the place where he blessed על המקום שבירך
and everything else onwards from where he was shown. ועל כל מה שנגלה לפניו
If the proper place was not open before him אבל אם לא היה המקום גלוי לפניו
rather it was necessary to roll אלא שצריכין לגלול
the Torah scroll (further to reach that point;*) את הספר
or even if the proper place was open before him, או אפילו היה המקום נגלה לפניו
but it was located before אלא שהוא קודם
the place which he was shown,** להמקום שהראו לו
he must say again the blessing, צריך לברך שנית הברכה
"who has chosen us ...". אשר בחר בנו
Nevertheless, "Bless ye..." is not repeated. אבל ברכו לא יאמר שנית
* {The Mishnoh Beruroh 140:9 mentions other opinions which maintain that even if it is necessary to roll
the Torah scroll to reach the proper place, as long as it is in the same portion, another blessing need not be
recited. The Mishnoh Beruroh does not subscribe to that opinion.}
** {As long as the proper place is open before the person reciting the blessing, whether before or after the
place he was shown, a second blessing is not required (Mishnoh Beruroh ibid.).}
He should first say ויאמר תחלה
"Blessed be the Lord who is blessed for ever and ever", ברוך שם כבוד מלכותו לעולם ועד
on the first blessing על הברכה הראשונה
that he recited in vain. שבירך לבטלה
(If the error was discovered) after he had only said אם עדיין לא אמר
just "Blessed art Thou, O Lord", 'אלא ברוך אתה ה
