Design Challenge: Your task is to build a model of a room
for Green Valley’s Dollhouse, record measurements of your
room and 3D objects, and write the steps of how you
created your room in the correct sequence.

Background: 3rd graders listened to The Adventures of

Henry Whiskers during library classes. The fictional doll-
house where Henry and his family live is based on an
actual exhibit in Windsor Castle in England. Queen Mary’s Dollhouse is one of the most
visited sights at Windsor Castle today. This link will show a video of the actual dollhouse:

Criteria:
 Your room must be built in a shoe box or similar sized box
placed on its side horizontally. Everything must be contained
in the shoe box. You must measure the length/width, depth,
and height of your shoebox.*
 A person looking at your room needs to be able to tell if it is a bedroom, kitchen,
garage, laundry room, etc. by the things that have been created to go in the
room. Use your artistic creativity to make an amazing room.
 You must have at least two 3D objects in your room. Creating 3D objects, like
furniture, is definitely engineering. You must measure the length/width, depth, and
height of your 3D objects.*
 You must use materials you have around the house to create
all items in your room. You may not buy anything. You may
not use items already created, like Barbie furniture or plastic
dollhouse furniture.
 Henry must be included in your room. You may use this image
or draw your own. We will all try to find him in every room.
 You must write the steps of how you created your room in the correct sequence.
* Measure in both inches and centimeters. If you don’t have a ruler or measuring tape,
you can estimate the measurement.

Materials:
 1 Shoe box or similar sized box
 Any materials in your home that can be used to make the items that would go in
the type of room you choose to create. (examples: paper, cardboard, cardstock
or cereal/food boxes, tissues, cotton balls, tissue paper, string, yarn, fabric, Legos,
glue, tape)
