Diverticular disease

Diverticular are small, bulging pouches that can form in the lining of your digestive system. they
are found most often in the lower part of the large intestine (colon).

Causes and risk factors

 Smoking

 Lack of exercise

 Certain medications

 Diet that is low in fiber and high in animal fat

 Chronic constipation

 Obesity

 Older patients

Symptoms

 Nausea or vomiting

 Fever

 Abdominal Tenderness

 Constipation

 Diarrhea

 Abdominal pain

 Decreased appetite

Diagnosis

 Colonoscopy

 Abdominal ultrasound

 Abdominal MRI scan ₹ CT scan

 Stool test

 Urine test

 Blood test
 Liver function test

Treatment

 Treatment of diverticulitis is dependent upon the severity of symptoms

 Antibiotics

 Pain medications

 Bed rest

 Bowel rest (liquid diet for 1-2 days)

 Increase more fiber to diet

Surgery

 Primary bowel resection

 Bowel resection with colostomy

Complications

 Fistula formation

 Stricture formation

 Perforation

 Abscess formation
