Reflection of Field Experience

I had the opportunity to observe Mrs. White’s Life Skills classroom at Caddo Mills

Middle School. Mrs. White teaches sixth-eighth grade students in a self-contained unit and she is

responsible for teaching all core classes, as well as Life Skills and Social Skills. I plan to teach

with the Special Education Department, so this was a great learning experience. I was able to

observe a teacher with over twenty-five years of experience.

As a future teacher I learned how important it is to plan and to be organized. Teaching

requires a plan for almost every minute of the day. I observed Mrs. White over a period of three

days and was able to participate and interact with the students. I learned their daily routine and

spent time getting to know the students. I liked the relationships that the students had formed

with their teacher. It shows the effort and time that Mrs. White has spent getting to know her

students. She formed a bond and was able to relate with the students. This was a great experience

as a future educator. I am looking forward to having my own classroom and students and being

able to be a part of their futures. Mrs. White’s classroom was very inviting and overall had a

positive environment. The students were kind and respectful. They were eager to participate, and

I felt included in their day.

The teacher used visual and tactile learning styles. She provided a lot of hands on

materials. She had a lot of different manipulatives for the students to use, especially during her

Math classes. She also incorporated the use of fun songs and videos to help engage the students

and review different content she has taught. Most of her lessons were student centered, she

allowed the student to become the teacher. For instance, each morning a different student would

lead the class through their morning meeting. The student would call on other students as they

discussed the weather, the calendar, and the news article of the day.

Having the opportunity to observe Mrs. White was a great example of a passionate and

hardworking teacher. Mrs. White’s students were all on different levels and she was able to

provide something for every student. She made everyone feel included. She has a heart for the

students and the job. She was inspiring to observe, and I learned so many valuable lessons and

she will be a great resource as I become a teacher and someday have my own classroom.
