(1.80X0.90X0.45) of 100 kg capacity is arranged 10 bags across length and breadth up to
12 layers in a stack. The clearance distance between the walls & the end of stack is 1 m
and between stacks is 2 m.
11. A RCC cylindrical grain storage bin has internal diameter of 5 m and is 20 m deep. It is
completely filled with paddy weighing 600 kg/m3. The angle f internal friction for paddy
can be taken as 350 while angle of external friction is 300. The ratio of horizontal and
vertical pressure intensity is 0.4. Calculate the lateral pressure intensity at 2.0 m interval.
12. Find the refrigeration load expressed in tons of refrigeration which is caused by heat loss
from the four side walls of a small cold room 2.4X3.0X2.4m. The walls are made of
20cm brick, 20 cm cork board and 1.25 cm cement. Inside wall temperature is -30 0C and
outside wall temperature is 210C. Add a suitable safety factor for losses through joints etc.
Respective thermal conductivities of brick, cork and cement plaster are 0.6 W/m 0C, 0.04
W/m0C and 0.8 W/m0C.
13. Wheat weighing 900 kg/m3 is loaded in a circular concrete silo of 3 m internal diameter
and a clear height of 8 m. The angle of internal friction for wheat is 250 and that for
wheat and concrete is 240. Applying Airy theory, calculate the maximum lateral pressure
at the bottom of bin section
