T h e work of this committee is under the joint sponsorship of t h e American Insti-
t u t e of Electrical Engineers and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers,
T h e s t a n d a r d i s t h e s e c o n d of a group of standards which represent a revision
and expansion of an existing standard, American Standard Graphical Symbols for
Use on Drawings in Mechanical Engineering, 232.2-1941.
In preparing the list of pipe fittings, valves, and piping symbols for use on draw-
ings, over one hundied companies and their representatives were consulted. Great
care was exercised to avoid conflicts with the symbols being assembled by com-
mittees in allied fields.

scope
This standard has been developed for use on drawings. Architects, engineers,
and confractors, by the use of t h e s t s y m b o l s on their plans, will have a standard
method of indication for pipe fittings, valves, piping m.d allied itcms. Confusion
in the interpretations of r e q u i r e m e n t s c a n t h u s be avoided.
