The Conversation, 29 Apr. 2020, theconversation.com/how-mauritius-outward-focused-

economy-survived-previous-shocks-135951.

This article gives information and statistics on how Mauritius island is trying to sustain economy

growth during the current COVID-19 pandemic. The island Mauritius is located off the country

of Africa in the Indian ocean. The island’s main industries are tourism, business processing and

financial services and they rely on costumers globally. In 2018 most of the exports from this

island were fish, clothing and sugar as 85% of the island is cultivated land of sugarcane. During

this global pandemic many countries have suspended travel which effects the island’s tourism

industry. Another concern during the pandemic is food shortages on the island because of a

previous food and financial crisis in 2007.

This article will be helpful for my research because it gives statistics from different years

regarding the different industries on Mauritius island. It mentions their exports for the goods

produced on the island and major countries such as Europe and Madagascar. It also helps explain
the difficulties small islands face with different shocks throughout the world. Many islands rely

greatly on tourism and the current pandemic and future pandemics can influence Mauritius’

economy.

Academic Journal:

Gitnajali, Pyndiah. “Decolonizing Creole on the Mauritius islands: Creative practices

in Mauritian Creole.” Island Studies Journal. 2016, Vol. 11 Issue 2, p485-504. 20p.

This academic journal gives information about how people on Mauritius Island got their native

language of Creole. Around 70% of the Mauritians on the island speak the Creole language. The

island of Mauritius was inhabited before Europeans started to scale the Indian ocean and the

island has a history of 330 years of slavery. It became an island for sugar plantations and was

made up of plantation owners, worker and slaves. Because of sugar production Mauritius island

had French and British colonization which resulted in a mix with French, Indian and African

languages. The creole language reflects years of inferiority because native languages were

portrayed as wicked and the English language was superior.

This article will be helpful in understanding the languages and cultures that are present on the

Mauritius Island. It also provides statistics on how much migration has taken place on the island

from French and British colonization. The article’s purpose is to give reliable information about

the amount of racial discrimination that has taken place on the island of Mauritius.
