Getting enough sleep is essential for helping a person maintain

optimal health and well-being. When it comes to our health, sleep is

as vital as regular exercise and eating a balanced diet. Most people
don’t get enough sleep. We live in a society that burns the candle at
both ends, a nation where people stay up all night to study, work, or
have fun. However, going without adequate sleep carries with it both
short- and long-term consequences.

It may seem obvious that sleep and taking rest is beneficial. Even
without fully grasping what sleep does for us, we know that going
without sleep and rest for too long makes us feel tires, and that
getting a good night's sleep can make us feel ready to take another
day. Studies have discovered that sleep plays a critical role in immune
function, metabolism, memory, learning, and other vital
functions. Sleep May Help Prevent Cancer and it can also reduces
stress. A good sleep and rest makes us feel energized and alert the
next day. Being engaged and active not only feels great but increases
our chances for another good night's sleep. When we wake up feeling
refreshed, use that energy to get out into the daylight, do active
things, and be engaged with our world. You'll sleep better the next
night and increase your daily energy level. Also, sleep plays an
important role in a process called memory consolidation. During
sleep, our body may be resting, but our brain is busy processing our
day, making connections between events, sensory input, feelings, and
memories. Researchers have found that people who sleep fewer hours
per night are more likely to be overweight or obese. It is thought that
a lack of sleep impacts the balance of hormones in the body that affect
appetite. Lastly, having rest is a time to relax, but it's also a time
during which the body is hard at work repairing damage caused by
stress, ultraviolet rays, and other harmful exposure. It helps the body
repair itself.

As a student we actually are sleeping less and not getting a healthy

amount. Many of us treat sleep as a luxury only for the weekends
(especially when the exam week comes) when it should be treated the
same no matter the day of the week. The negative effects of an
unfulfilling night of sleep outweigh the benefits of a few more hours of
studying. We, students need to start changing our sleep habits and
schedules, instead take a good rest and sleep to maintain a healthy
body.
