BOEKENLIJST All-Time Bestselling Children's Books PDF
Assistant Professor in Publishing Arts - University of North Carolina Wilmington NEXT JOB
Edited by Diane Roback; compiled by Debbie Hochman Turvey | Dec 17, 2001
Since we last published these lists, back in 1996, a number of changes have taken place within the
industry. Publishing houses have consolidated. Children's bestseller lists, once few and far
between, have proliferated, as have bestsellers. The stakes have become higher, with larger
advances being paid to authors and illustrators. But the most noticeable change on the children's
end of the business was the emergence on the scene, in 1998, of boy wizard Harry Potter.
MORE FROM PW
Predictably, all of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter novels placed among the top 20 in both our hardcover
and paperback lists. Also making strong debuts on the all-time lists are such hits as Thomas the
Tank Engine, Blue's Clues, the Chronicles of Narnia, Sandra Boynton's board books and If You
Give a Mouse a Cookie and its companions. Sales of old favorites from Dr. Seuss, Shel Silverstein,
Maurice Sendak, Laura Ingalls Wilder, and Stan and Jan Berenstain remain strong, while sales of
bestselling titles from the 1980s and early '90s--most notably Goosebumps, Baby-sitters Club and
Barney--have dropped off dramatically. Also of note is how a few paperback classics like Judy
Blume's novels and Go Ask Alice have lost momentum. Writers to Watch:
