Lesson Plan Title: Adding and Subtracting by 10

Grade level: 1st grade

Objective

The objective of this lesson is for students to learn addition and subtraction by 10, to understand
the concepts of adding to and taking from. The key vocabulary words in this lesson are addition,
subtraction by 10.

Materials

 Pencils
 Exercise sheets
 Overhead projector

Key Terms

 Addition by 10
 Subtraction by 10

Lesson Introduction

We will practice single digits addition and subtraction before we start adding and subtracting by
10. If a large number of students successfully answer these problems, we can begin this lesson.

Instruction

1. We will start by adding and subtracting single digits to refresh. I will solve 8 + 1 and 3 +
4.
2. Then I will ask the students to solve 5 + 3 by raising their hands and 6 + 2.
3. I will solve some subtraction problems and then let the students answer some problems.
4. Once the majority of the class successfully answer correctly, I will proceed explaining
how to add and subtract by 10. Example: 75 + 10, 65 + 10, 33 + 10.
5. I will ask for volunteers to answer some problems by raising their hands.
6. Once all the students answer correctly, I will proceed explaining how to subtract by 10.
Example: 75 – 10, 65 – 10.
7. I will ask the students to solve subtraction problems by raising their hands.
8. I will pass out exercise and homework sheets.

Activity

1. Give each student 6 exercise sheets to complete during class.

2. Discuss that if you start with 75 and then take away 10, you have 65. The practice with
addition should make the subtraction concept a bit easier. Repeat this with the students
several times. Have them practice in groups.
3. After the students have practiced this, it’s time to have them create their own simple
problems. Divide them into groups of 4 or 5 and tell them that they can make their own
addition or subtraction problems for the class.
4. Give students a few minutes to think of a problem. Walk around the room to assist with
their thinking.
5. Ask the groups to show their problems to the class and have the seated students record
the problems on a piece of paper.

Lesson Extensions

Ask students to go home and describe to their family how to add and subtract by 10. Have a
family member sign off that this discussion took place.

Special Needs Accommodations

Those students who cannot write record your answers on your audio recorder and I will listen to
them for grading.
