Objective

Students will be able to explain the meaning of Spanish words by creating


a chart with Spanish words and its definition from the book as a class with
90% accuracy.

Materials Needed

Dreams By: Yuyi Morales

Worksheet with Spanish words and blank definition

Kids Spanish to English dictionary

Blank sheets of paper

Pencils and Markers

Procedure
Introduce: Introduce the book Dreamers By Yuyi Morales then ask the class
“Was there ever a time where you felt left out just because of who you are or
where you came from? How did this feeling make you feel? What did you do
to change it?’’

Read: Begin reading the story to the class in the reading carpet.

Discuss: Ask the students to get into groups of three to answer the five
questions below. Time spent on each question should be two minutes.
Question 1: What “gifts” did the mother bundle into the backpack?
Question 2: If you were in the same position what would you take with you?
Question 3: How do you think the mom felt when they first made it to the
“other side?” How did these feelings change as they lived in the states for a
few days?
Question 4: What place did they find that was beneficial to their learning?
How does this show the importance of education?
Question 5: What was the overall meaning of the story? What can we take
away/learn from it?

Activities

Students individually work on drawing a time they can remember being with a
loved one and learning something new. Students will be given a blank sheet
of paper and markers to color the sheet.

Students will move their desks inward to make a circle. The teacher will pass
out worksheets with Spanish words from the book. The entire class will work
together to use key terms in order to come up with the definition of each
Spanish word. Teacher will use the Spanish dictionary if needed to find the
definition.

Evaluation
Teacher will view worksheets to create participation of each student.
