Tour Route Guide 2017-2018 – Red Hawk for a Day (RHFAD)

Before the tour:


 Get parking passes and business cards
 Be in lobby 10-15 minutes prior to tour, basically just try to be there before the guest
 Smile and mingle with guests in lobby (usually this doesn’t last that long for RHFAD)

When guests arrive:


 Check that they parked in the Red Hawk Deck (because we give parking vouchers ONLY for that parking garage- these are also not placed
in the bag, you have to go to the desk to ask for one)
 Ask if they need a note for school
 Point out the complimentary refreshments
 Tell them where the restrooms are located
 Let them know when the tour will begin

Tour tips:
 Give brief but clear directions to next tour stop
 Do not walk backwards, walk within the tour and talk to tour guests
 When stopping, step off main paths so you don’t block traffic

Starting the tour:

belongings, and head right in front of this building to start the tour!
**Please wait until most of the guests have gathered before heading out to the front of Dickson.

Once outside Dickson Hall:

BUILDINGS
Dickson Hall
 College of Humanities and Social Sciences: (Ex. Anthropology, English, Philosophy, Psychology, Languages, etc...)
 You will most likely take classes here for your General Education Requirements (see: General Education
Requirements)
o If you are entering undeclared, your classes will be mainly Gen Eds freshman year.
New School of Business
 New home for the School of Business
 17 study rooms, 150 seat lecture hall, student lounges, 3D Printing Lab
 Feliciano Center for Entrepreneurship: offers Certificate of Entrepreneurship (available to ALL students, not just business)
 Terrace / Seating Area on 4th Floor
 The School of Business is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) International, the highest
accreditation for business schools worldwide; only 1 in 3 business schools have it
Calcia Hall
 Main facility for the Art and Design department of College of the Arts
 Fine Arts specialization studios (ex. Drawing, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry-making, photography, etc.)
 FYI – 122-seat auditorium and Gallery 3 ½ (showcases student work)
School of Nursing

 Simulation center with high fidelity mannequins so students can practice critical thinking and receive feedback about different clinical
scenarios.

 Home of the College of Education and Human Services: (Ex. Several different depts in Education, Exercise Science, Nutrition, Family and
Child Studies, etc...)
 First floor: Coffee/snack bar, closed and open study lounges, 7 lecture halls (six 100-seat, one 200-seat)
 Second and third floors: Classrooms (similar size to what you’d probably find in your high school)
 Fourth floor: Food (Cooking) Lab, multipurpose rooms for Exercise Science
 Fifth floor: Largest computer lab on campus
o Students get $40 free printing, ~1,000 sheets double-sided
 Entire campus is wireless; students can print from any computer on AND off campus using Webprint
 Sixth floor: Office of Information Technology (OIT)
 Seventh floor: Conference Center

Student Center – This is a really important section to know
 Clubs and organizations
o About 120 student-run clubs and organizations on campus, hold events throughout the year
 Including 36 Greek organizations (4% of students [900 Greeks!])
 1 of 4 universities in New Jersey that has an LGBTQ center and not just a club
o Start new club with faculty advisor and 15 student signatures
 Red Hawk Nest
o One of our commuter lounges on campus, but not just for commuters!
o TV, comfortable chairs, warm in winter (good for naps)
o Commuter Student Association Resources and Services (CARS), under CSI
 Connects commuter students with various organizations/involvement on campus
 Student Government Association (SGA) and Center for Student Involvement (CSI)
o SGA -> Oversees the universities clubs and organizations with $1.9 million budget
o CSI -> “mission is to solve the crime of boredom”
o Trips for students: (ex. Broadway shows, theme park trips)
o On-campus events: (ex. comedy nights, movies, free admission and prizes)
o Calendar posted with events, In the Loop and Weekends at Montclair (WAM) sent every Friday to MSU email account
o Homecoming and concerts is planned by the SGA's Programming board, SLAM (student life at Montclair) when speaking about
it (SLAM is its own entity)

o Offers a variety of Montclair State items (apparel, drinkware, books)
o Can rent and buy textbooks
o Offers a buy back program for the textbooks that you bought
o Offers a price matching program

o 15-minute limit on computers, ensures computer will be open for quick use
o Can also check OIT website to see how many computers are free/in use

 1 of 2 schools in country to have a diner on campus that is open 24/7
 Accepts meal plan dollars (Flex and Red Hawk), takeout available
The Heights
 Brand new residence halls, opened in Fall 2011
 Houses all level students
 Comprised of two complexes, Dinallo Heights and Machuga Heights with 4 buildings each that are centrally connected
 Added about 2,000 beds to campus
 Two living options: two single-occupancy rooms or one double-occupancy room
o In both options, two students share a bathroom, with sink outside
 Rooms are air conditioned
 Complex includes community lounges, study lounges, game rooms, and a community kitchen
 Stonewall Suites – LGBTQ friendly living community available in Dinallo Heights
 FYI – Each building is dedicated to a historical figure of significance to New Jersey

Pulse on Dining at Sam’s Place Complex


 Located in Machuga Heights
 One of two residential dining halls, accepts Constant Pass (and blocks, Flex, Red Hawk dollars)
 Like a food court – all-you-can-eat stations: pasta/pizza, world’s fare, sandwich bar, salad bar, grill
 Bistro 62
o Open when dining hall is closed
o Serves sandwiches, paninis, flatbread pizzas, etc
Overlook (The green building a little off campus)
 Human Resources, Payroll, Accounts Payable
Upper Classmen Housing (credit requirements) – just mention these
 The Village Apartments
o Four students in either 4 singles, or 2 singles and one double, sharing two bathrooms, kitchen, and living room
o Students must have 50 credits to live in these apartments
 FYI – Alcohol Policy: Permitted only where all residents are of legal drinking age and where there are no guests who
are not of legal drinking age and only inside the apartments; No parties involving alcohol are permitted
 Frank Sinatra Hall
o 6 to 8 students in singles/doubles/triples, sharing 3 bathrooms (one full, one with sink and toilet, one with shower)
o Community kitchen
o Students must have 24 credits to live in this residence hall
 Hawk Crossing Apartments
o Four students living in two double-occupancy rooms, sharing bathroom, kitchen, and living room
o Students must have 30 credits to live in these apartments
Bohn-Blanton Quad
 Blanton Hall
o Houses all level students
o Air conditioned
o Dunkin Donuts, Which Which, Outtakes, Red Hawk Yogurt (Frozen yogurt), and Chilis restaurant
o Suite-style room: two double-occupancy or triple-occupancy rooms connected by a bathroom
o University Health Center
 All full-time students must have health insurance
 Physicals, screenings, diagnosis and treatment of illness, on-site prescription medication
 Open Monday-Saturday during the semester

 Free to all students – swipe in with your student ID at center desk ( not is free. I.e. Personal Trainer, apparel.)

 Red Hawk Math Learning Center – easy to forget because it is the language building

 Home to the Industrial Design program and the MFA Program in Studio Art
Fox Studio Theater – Important to know sizes especially, when speaking with an arts guest – Kasser (next page), Memorial, and Fox Studio
 Black box theater, ~100 seats – more for rehearsal though
 Used as both an acting classroom and performance facility
 The Fashion Studies Dept is located in the lower level
Memorial Auditorium
 Dedicated to University students and alumni who gave their lives during WWII
 1,000 seat auditorium used for Theatre and Dance productions as well as various events throughout the year

o FYI – Individual and group counseling, are happy to discuss ANYTHING that is affecting your day-to-day living (not just very
serious issues), confidential, can even talk with a counselor over the phone instead of going into their office

 Sound-proof, temperature-controlled practice rooms with Steinway pianos (anyone can use the rooms if they’re available)

 First and only building when University opened in 1908 as the New Jersey State Normal School for teachers

 George Segal Gallery, named after the renowned sculptor
o FYI – home to a permanent collection of modern and contemporary artworks and has at minimum six changing contemporary
exhibitions each year (including an annual exhibition of students graduating from the Department of Art and Design)
 Street Crossing, white statues – gift of the George and Helen Segal Foundation, considered one of his foremost works; depicts people
leisurely walking about... an everyday scene at Montclair State!

 Peak Performances, MSU’s arts presenting series, showcases internationally acclaimed artists, MSU students, and faculty

Meal Plans
 Two options: Constant Pass or Blocks (swipes)
 Constant Pass: unlimited access to residential dining halls (Freeman Dining Hall, Sam Mills Dining Complex)
o Required for students with less than 30 credits
 Blocks: certain number of blocks per semester, one block = one meal = one swipe into residential dining halls
o Blocks also have a cash equivalency that can be used at certain dining locations on campus

o Some locations (Rathskellar, Student Center Cafeteria) have special meals that cost one block
 Both plans come with Flex dollars: can be used just like cash at any dining location on campus, carry over to Spring only
 Some plans Red Hawk dollar option: used anywhere (bookstore, Rec Center) and participating off-campus restaurants
o Applebees, Let’s Yo, Six Brothers Diner, Alexus Steakhouse, CVS, etc.
 Vending machines accept Flex and Red Hawk dollars

Residence Halls
 All rooms come with a bed, desk, and dresser or wardrobe for each student
 All residence halls have a 24/7 staffed front desk by SAs (Service Assistants)
o Students must use their ID to swipe into their residence hall
o Students or non-residents entering a residence hall other than their own must be signed in as a guest by a resident of that
specific residence hall
o Overnight guest policy: person over age 16 may stay 3 nights per week
 All residence halls have an RA (Resident Assistant) on each floor.
o They are in charge of roommate contracts and putting on events for their floors
 Students can receive mail in their mailboxes, larger packages are held at the Mail Center (across from RH Deck)
 Free community laundry facilities are available in all residence halls, students must provide their own detergent
 Students may have one mini refrigerator and one microwave per room
o Must follow certain size specifications
 All rooms are wired for cable television with 78 channels, including HBO!

 Completed online
 Students rank available residence halls by preference
 Answer a questionnaire about living habits to help with roommate assignments
 May request a roommate
 Assignments will be available online in the summer
 Returning students are able to pick their exact room assignment; priority determined by number of credits

Parking and Transportation


 Students with 30 or more credits can buy a resident parking permit for designated resident lots on campus
 Commuter students can park in Car Parc Diem and designated commuter lots on campus
 Two train station stops on opposite ends of campus: Montclair Heights station and Montclair State University station
o Montclair-Boonton line direct to New York Penn Station (~50 minutes)
 FYI – Certain NJ Transit buses stop in front of Red Hawk Deck
o Willowbrook Mall ($1.50 each way)
 DeCamp Bus into New York City stops at a street near the entrance to campus (~25 min)
 Zip Car rental (must join online, discounted rate)
 Bike Rental is available through the Student Recreation Center

Shuttle Buses
 Several shuttle bus stops across campus that run 24/7 during the semester
 Stops at outer campus residence halls, parking decks and lots, train stations
 Free off-campus shuttle on Saturdays: goes to Upper Montclair and Clifton Commons
o Ex. Stop & Shop, Target, AMC movie theater and more
 Can use NextBus phone app to track where the shuttles are and when the next will arrive

Campus Safety
 MSUPD officers patrol campus parking facilities and academic and residential buildings 24/7
 Police have a direct number, can put it in your contact list
 Blue Light Emergency System: 150 emergency phones on campus which connect directly to University Police
 Mobile Guardian: use cell phone to set a timer when walking between destinations on campus – if the timer is not turned off, or the
distress signal is sent, University Police will be able to located the individual using the phone’s GPS
 Students can set up text message alerts on their phone and email; allows the University to communicate important information about
campus safety and other events
 E-TIPS (email) and Hawk Eye (texting), confidentially report tips to University Police

Athletics
 18 NCAA Division III varsity teams
o Teams train in Panzer Athletic Center
 Other venues on campus: Sprague Field, Pitzer Soccer Field, Yogi Berra Stadium (NJ Jackals), Softball Stadium, Dioguardi Field
 Intramural and club sports through the Rec Center allow students to participate in sports without time commitments or skill level of
varsity
o Intramurals play against other MSU teams
o Club sports play against teams outside of MSU

FYI – Study Abroad


 Academic programs in over 50 countries
 Semester, year, summer, and short-term programs available
 Can use financial aid and can receive credits
