VICE CHANCELLOR’S
ORIENTATION HOST PROGRAM
Congratulations
We are so happy that you have taken the opportunity to be a host for new students as part of
the VC’s Orientation Host Program.
The next few pages will take you through all you need to know to be a successful host. Please
read it carefully before you turn up on the first day.
If you have any questions you can contact Tia Milohis at tia.milohis@adelaide.edu.au
• You will be allocated a group of students from your faculty area by the host support team.
This step is only for those of you who are also signed up to be a Peer Mentor for your Faculty.
You should have separate instructions on your duties for the Faculty day.
• Talk to your students to arrange a place and time to meet them on your Faculty Day (you may
receive an email with more information)
• Attend Faculty/School events
• Provide advice, referrals, introductions and support
Remember:
• You cannot – and should not – give program advice
• You cannot – and must not – give Visa advice
• Answer questions honestly and if you don’t know the answer, refer to Ask Adelaide.
• Share your experiences at university (the good and the challenging) but recognise that
everyone is different so may experience things differently.
• Try your best and don’t be afraid to check with the Ask Adelaide team if you get stuck!
• Be here on time and in the right place on Monday 24 February 2020, 8am
• Dress appropriately and comfortably – Your coloured polo shirt must be your top layer.
• Have fun
• Share your positive experiences
• Talk with the host support team if you need anything
• If parents turn up refer them to the host support team
• Don’t go too fast during the day. Take your time and keep the group talking
• Encourage the group to talk with each other – one of the key achievements is that they make
friends with each other
• The Bus Stop tour was designed to take all students to the location of support services rather
than just telling them where it is.
• There will be a representative from the support service at the bus stop that will give a brief
overview of what services they offer and how they can help current students. They will also
be there to answer questions. You do not need to know much about each service – the rep will
be there to answer questions.
• You must ensure that all the students in your group receives a stamp on their planner from
each bus stop.
• Hosts will be split into 3 groups – each group will have a different plan to follow on the day
to ensure your students attend 1 Welcome Talk, 1 full Bus Stop Tour and the VC Welcome on
Goodman Lawns.
• You will all receive a printable map with the route and bus stops highlighted – please have
this available on the day to follow. We will have spares as well.
• You will also receive some talking points on each of the bus stops to use as talking points.
Please refer to this throughout the tour.
• It is imperative that you follow the route outlined on the map to ensure that students still see
our beautiful campus and get to all the bus stops.
• In your training pack you will also find a document outlining the plan for each host group –
you will be allocated a group number on the day.

9. Career Services
Outside Level 4, Hub Central
This year the students will be receiving a FREE and exclusive 2020 t-shirt and Student
Guide (notebook). The stall will be set up in the Hub on Level 4, all they need to do is
show their student ID card as a new student.
Before you get to the stall please make sure all your students have their ID card or ID
number ready for the stall holder.
The best time to take your students there is at any point you are in the hub and it is a
convenient time.
It may take a while to get all your students organised so keep this in mind in case it
effects getting to a Welcome Talk or Goodman Lawns. They can get the T-shirt and
student guide at any point throughout the week.
