On the learning environment


Guide Questions: Note: You do not need to answer all, they are just there to help you reflect on
your experience.

• How do you find learning maths online?


• How do you compare learning maths online versus in-person classes?
• Are there things you do differently when studying maths online compared to in-person
classes?
• Were there any specific lesson or time that you felt you were glad you were learning maths
online? Elaborate on your experience.
• Were there also any specific lesson or time that you felt it were best to learn them in a typical
in-person classroom? Elaborate on your experience.
• Do you have any routine when learning maths online, like do you browse course materials first,
or you listen straight to teacher’s online lesson, do you pause videos frequently, do you open
other windows or tabs in your browser for social media sites? How do these routines help
you?
• When you have a question, or there is something you do not fully understand in the lesson
video or material given, what do you do? Do you go straight to the teacher? Do you check
websites? What are these websites you frequently visit to check something in maths that you
do not know?
• How about the pace of the online lessons, are they too fast, too slow or just right? Explain
your answer.

On assignments, problem sets and tests

• How do you generally feel about doing homework, problem sets and quizzes at home?
Elaborate on your answer.
• When you answer these, do you consult online resources? Or do you answer them with
minimal aid like in typical in-person classroom where you only have textbook (if allowed),
notebook (if allowed), calculator (if allowed), paper and pencil?
• What is your specific routine when an assessment task is given to you? Do you immediately
download and answer the task? Or, you wait for some time until maybe a day before the
deadline?
• Compare your habits, expectations, practices, when you did assessments tasks before online
learning and now during online learning? What are the differences? Are there similarities?
• When you receive your scores, do you think they truly reflect what and how you have been
learning so far? Why or why not? Do you think your scores would have been different if the
assessments task were done in typical in-person classes?
On the teaching environment and the teacher

• How do you find listening to pre-recorded or live online lessons so far? How do they compare
to typical in-person classes?
• Can you identify benefits for watching a pre-recorded video lesson or live online lesson
compared to typical in-person classes? Why do you think are they beneficial?
• Can you identify disadvantages in watching a pre-recorded video lesson or live online lesson
compared to typical in-person classes? Why do you think are they disadvantageous?
• Was there a time that while watching an online lesson (whether pre-recorder or live) that you
had a question, or you did not understand something, what did you do? Did you ask the
teacher? How did you ask the teacher? If you did not ask the teacher, how did you look for
the answer to your question? Did you perhaps ask a classmate? Your parent? Did you
perhaps check a website? a web forum? Describe in detail your experience.
• Do you feel you are a bit more focused to the lesson because they are being taught online, or
do you feel the opposite? Are you more distracted now that the lessons are taught online?
Give specific experiences you can recall.
• When attending to your online classes, describe your typical physical environment. Are you in
a room where you are alone, or are you in a crowded spot in your house? Is there enough
ventilation or you feel cramped and uncomfortable because of the summer heat? Are you
seated comfortably in front of a desk, or table, or are you staying in bed? Realize, the more
detailed your description, the better.

On collaboration and communication with classmates

• Generally, now that you are engaged in online learning, do you still interact with your
classmates and friends in school? Do you feel you have interacted more with them, or have
interacted less? Do you miss talking to them even if it were not about your lessons?
• How do you keep in contact with your classmate and friends in school these days? How
frequent do you connect with them?
• Was there a time you need your classmate to help you in your maths lesson? Describe the
situation in detail, like what was the thing you needed help with? How did you ask for help
from your classmate? How did you connect with her or him? Did the issue get resolved
successfully?
• Was there a time also that it was you who helped your classmate in maths class? Describe the
situation in detail? What did s/he needed help with? How did you help? Did the issue get
resolved successfully?
