DESIGN OF MACHINE ELEMENTS - I (In Sem.)
(2012 Pattern)

Time : 1 Hour 30 Min.] [Maximum Marks : 30

Instructions to the candidates:
1) Answer Q.1 or Q.2, Q.3 or Q.4 Q.5 or Q.6.
2) Neat diagrams must be drawn wherever necessary.
3) Figures to the right side indicate full marks.
4) Assume suitable data, if necessary.

UNIT - I

Q1) a) Derive an expression for bending stress in the cotter of a cotter joint?[4]

b) Define factor of safety? Explain the factors to be considered while

selecting the factor of safety. [6]

OR

Q2) A bell crank lever is to be designed to raise a load of 5 KN at the short arm
end. The arm lengths are 150mm and 500mm. The permissible stresses for
lever and pin materials in shear and tension are 60N/mm2 and 90N/mm2
respectively. The bearing pressure on the pin is to be limited to 12 N/mm2.
Assume the lever cross section as b=4t and fulcrum pin length as 1.25 times
pin diameter. [10]

UNIT - II

Q3) a) i) Define torsional rigidity. [4]

ii) Lateral rigidity.
b) Classify the coupling and give the difference between flange and flexible
coupling. [6]

P.T.O.
OR
Q4) A shaft is supported by two bearings placed 1m apart. A 600mm diameter
pulley is mounted at a distance of 300mm to the right of left hand bearing and
this drives a pulley directly below it with the help of belt having maximum
tension of 2.25 kN. Another pulley 400mm diameter is placed 200mm to the
left of right hand bearing is driven with the help of electric motor and belt,
which is placed horizontally to the right. The angle of contact for both the
pulleys is 180° and μ = 0.24. Determine the suitable diameter for a solid
shaft, allowing stress of 42 MPa in shear for material of shaft. Assume that the
torque on one pulley is equal to that on the other pulley. [10]
UNIT - III

Q5) a) Draw the following diagrams and write their equations. [4]
i) Goodman diagram
ii) Soderberg diagram
b) What is stress concentration? What are the causes of stress concentration?
Explain any two methods to reduce stress concentration. [6]
OR
Q6) A transmission shaft of cold drawn steel is subjected to a fluctuating torque
which varies from-100 N-m to 400 N-m. The factor of safety is 2 and the
expected reliability is 90%. Neglecting the effect of stress concentration,
determine the diameter of the shaft. Assume the distortion energy theory of
failure. Sut = 500MPa, Syt = 300MPa. [10]
