Film Sound

The Conversation (Francis Ford

Coppola, 1974)

I usually start by asking you to think

about issues we may face in
attempting to focus on sound, rather
than image (give it a bit of thought
before scrolling down to my
suggestions…)
- you can't 'freeze' a sound and consider it for a long time like we
did with the 1st shot of Raging Bull
- sound is multi-layered, complex
- you can't isolate/dissociate sound from the image it accompanies
(other than by shutting your eyes- we have experimented with that
in the past!)
- historically cinema was considered a 'visual' medium, published
film analysis has prioritised image-based study
-etc
-think about particular uses of sound that film can employ (in class
we’d list them on the board …allows me to correct the common
mis-spelling of ..(non-) diegetic
