Questions about simple machines

Mechanical advantage: An advantage gained by using

simple machines to accomplish work with less effort. Making
the task easier (which means it requires less force), but may
require more time or room to work (more distance, rope, etc.).

LEVER
1. What are the parts of a lever?
2. What types of levers are there?
3. What happens when the force is applied closer to the
fulcrum?
4. What happens when the force is applied further from the
fulcrum?

WHEEL AND AXLE

1. What is the relationship between the force needed to
move an object and the size of a Wheel?
2. What happens to the axle when the wheel is moving? Do
they move in the same direction?
3. Why are wheels always circular?
4. What happens to the force of friction when we use a
wheel? Does it increase or decrease?

PULLEY
1. What is the difference between movable and fixed
pulleys?
2. How does the number of pulleys affect the force you
need to lift a load?
3. In a pulley system, does the force to lift the load increase
or decrease?
4. What is the magnitude of the force of a pulley system
compared to a single pulley?
INCLINED PLANE
1. When is less force needed to move an object? When an
object moves on a short and steep plane or on a long
and gradual one?

2. How does the angle of an inclined plane affect the

movement of an object?
3. If you wanted to move things from the first floor to the
second, would you prefer to do it with a short or a long ramp?
4. With which one would it be easier? With a short or with a
long ramp?
5. With which one would it be faster? With a short or with a
long ramp?

SCREW
1. When do we use a screw to join things?
2. When do we use a screw to lift things?
3. Does the rotation force applied to the screw increase or
decrease depending on the number of threads? How?

WEDGE
1. What makes the shape of the wedge useful to cut or
separate things?
2. What do we use a wedge for?
3. What is the relationship between the inclination angle of a
wedge and its use?
