Directions: Write the letter of the correct answer in each question. Explain your answer in 1 to
5 sentences only.
1. A steel bar 50mm in diameter and 2m long is surrounded by a shell of a cast iron 5mm
thick. Compute the load that will compress bar a total of 0.8mm in length of 2m. For steel
E = 200 GPa and for cast iron E = 100 GPa.
2. The composite bars in figure below is firmly attached to unyielding supports. What
maximum axial load P can be applied if the allowable stress are 10 ksi for aluminum and
18 ksi for steel.
3. As shown in figure below, a rigid bar with negligible mass is pinned at O and attached to
two vertical rods. Assuming that the rods were initially stress free, what maximum load P
can be applied without exceeding stress of 150 MPa in the steel rod and 70 MPa in the
bronze rod.
4. A steel rod is stretched between two rigid walls and carries a tensile load of 5000N at
20°C.If the allowable stress is not exceed 130MPa at -20°C, what is the minimum
diameter of the rod? Assume ∞ = 11.7µm/(m°C) and E = 200 GPa
5.6. Calculate the increase in stress for each segment of the compound bar shown in the
figure below if the temperature increases by 100°F. Assume that the supports are
unyielding and that the bar is suitably braced against buckling.
10. A 6mm bar is subjected to a tensile force of 4000N. Find the stress.
