Second Semester, A.Y. 2021-2022
ACTIVITY NO. 1

Instruction: Analyze and solve the following problems. Show your complete solution and box your final
answer/s. Submit in PDF file. File name: complete name with surname first.

1. Determine the resultant internal loadings acting on the cross section at C of the cantilevered beam
shown.

2. The 500-kg engine is suspended from the crane boom shown on the right.
Determine the resultant internal loadings acting on the cross section of the
boom at point E.

3. Determine the resultant internal loadings acting on the cross section at G

of the beam shown. Each joint is pin connected.

4. A solid 14 mm diameter steel hanger rod is used to hold up one end of a walkway support beam. The
force carried by the rod is 21 kN. Determine the normal stress in the rod. Neglect the weight of the rod.
See figure on the right,

5. Rigid bar ABC is supported by a pin at A and axial member (1), which has a cross-sectional area of
540 mm2. The weight of rigid bar ABC can be neglected. (a) Determine the normal stress in member
(1) if a load of P = 8 kN is applied at C; (b) If the maximum normal stress in member (1) must be limited
to 50 MPa, what is the maximum load magnitude P that may be applied to rigid bar at C? See figure
below.

6. A rod is composed of an aluminum section rigidly attached between steel and bronze sections as shown
below. Axial Loads are applied at the positions indicated. If P = 3000 lb and the cross-sectional area of
the rod is 0.55 in2, determine the stress in each section.

7. The wall thickness of a 4-ft-diameter spherical tank is 5/16 in. Calculate the allowable internal pressure
if the stress is limited to 8100 psi.

8. A brass tube with an outside diameter of 2 in. and a wall

thickness of 0.375 in. is connected to steel tube with an inside
diameter of 2 in. and a wall thickness of 0.25 in. by using a
0.75 in-diameter pin as shown in the figure. Determine (a) the
shearing stress in the pin when the joint is carrying an axial
load P of 10 kip; (b) the length of joint required if the pin is
replaced by a glued joint and the shearing stress in the glue
must be limited to 250 psi.

9. The control arm is subjected to the loading shown in the figure. Determine to the nearest ¼ in the
required diameters of the steel pins at A and C if the allowable shear stress for the steel is 9.2 ksi.

10. The suspender rod is supported at its end by a fixed-connected circular

disk as shown in the figure. If the rod passes through a 40-mm-diameter
hole, determine the minimum required diameter of the rod and the
minimum thickness of the disk needed to support the 20-kN load. The
allowable normal stress for the rod is σallow = 65 MPa, and the allowable
shear stress for the disk is τallow = 45 MPa.
