PLATE NO.2
“COLUMNS AND BEAMS”

Direction: Write the questions and your detailed solution (including the units in the computation)
on our given plate. Round off your answers to 3 decimal points.

1. Two A36O L150 x 90 x 10 angles are used with 10 mm gusset plate to create a top chord of a truss. The
long legs are back to back making the short legs unstiffened elements. Determine the axial load
capacity for a length of 2 meters. Refer to Figure 1

2. A structural column with Fy = 250 MPa having an unbraced length of 3 m is to carry a total axial load of
1800 kN. Which of the following sections is most economical (lightest) for the given loads. The column
is hinged at both ends.

Section A: Area = 13,800 𝑚𝑚2 : 𝐼𝑥 = 293.63 x 106 𝑚𝑚4 ; 𝐼𝑦 = 67.59 x 106 𝑚𝑚4
Section B: Area = 11,500 𝑚𝑚2 : 𝐼𝑥 = 177.04 x 106 𝑚𝑚4 ; 𝐼𝑦 = 39.14 x 106 𝑚𝑚4
Section C: Area = 16,050 𝑚𝑚2 : 𝐼𝑥 = 452.6 x 106 𝑚𝑚4 ; 𝐼𝑦 = 107.29 x 106 𝑚𝑚4
Section D: Area = 15,675 𝑚𝑚2 : 𝐼𝑥 = 391.73 x 106 𝑚𝑚4 ; 𝐼𝑦 = 107.28 x 106 𝑚𝑚4

3. A column 3 m long and pinned at both ends is carries an axial load of 190 kN. The column is made up of
2 angles of unequal legs with long legs back to back and separated by a gusset plate whose thickness is
11 mm. Use A36 steel with Fy = 248 MPa and E = 200 000 MPa. Three sections are being considered, as
follows, with their respective properties relevant of this problem (length units are in meters):

Section A (𝑚2 ) 𝑟𝑥 (m) 𝑟𝑦 (𝑚)

2L 125 x 75 x 12 0.00454 0.0390 0.0160
2L 150 x 90 x 10 0.00463 0.0480 0.0195
2L 150 x 90 x 12 0.00550 0.0500 0.0251
a. Which of the sections gives the largest allowable compressive stress?
b. Which of the sections give the smallest allowable compressive stress?
c. Which of the section gives the most economical (lightest) sections for the given load?

4. The A-36 steel W 6 x 20 column in Figure 2 is pin connected at its ends and is subjected to the axial load
P. The column is laterally supported about its weak axis. Determine the maximum value of P. The
properties of W 6 X 20 relevant to this problem are as follows. A= 3790 𝑚𝑚2 𝐼𝑥 = 17,231,980 𝑚𝑚4 𝑟𝑥 =
67.4 𝑚𝑚 𝑟𝑦 = 38 𝑚𝑚 𝑑 = 157 𝑚𝑚

5. A W14 X 550 is used as a column to carry an axial load of 3000 kN. Design a base plate to support the
column with m = n. The base plate is to rest on full area of a concrete compression block with fc = 21
MPa. Use A50 steel base plate.

6. Determine the capacity of the 38-mm thick A36 steel base plate shown in Figure 3. The base plate rests
on a 600 mm x 600 mm concrete column. Use fc = 27 MPa.

7. A W 24 x 103 is used as a beam that is simply supported at its ends. The properties of the section is as
follows:

d = 632.1 mm bf = 228.60mm
tw = 14 mm tf = 24.90 mm

The beam is simply supported at supports only. Determine the allowable bending stress for a length of
a) 2 m b) 4 m c) 9 m and d) 16 m. Use Fy = 248 MPa

8. The beam shown in the Figure 4 has a length of 9 m and is not restrained against lateral buckling. The
beam is A36 steel with yield strength Fy = 248 MPa. The beam is a W 21 x 248 steel shape, whose
relevant properties are as follows:

Weight = 369.4 kg/m bf = 324.5 mm

Area = 46968 𝑚𝑚2 tf = 50.5 mm
Depth, d = 603 mm 𝑟𝑡 = 87.63 mm
tw = 27.9 mm S = 9,332.4 x 103 𝑚𝑚3

a. Determine the bending coefficient due to moment (gradient) acting on the beam:
b. Determine the allowable flexural stress in the compression flange.
c. Determine the permissible value of moment M.

9. A simply supported beam with span of 8 meters is subjected to a counter clockwise moment at the left
support and a clockwise moment at the right equal to 25% of the moment at the left support, both
acting in the plane of the minor axis of the beam. The beam is not restrained against lateral buckling.
The beam is A36 steel with yield strength Fy = 248 MPa. The beam is a W 21 x 62 steel shape, whose
relevant properties for this problem are:

𝑟𝑡 = 0.053 m tf = 0.016 m
𝑑 = 0.533𝑚 S = 0.002077 𝑚3
bf = 0.210

a) Determine the slenderness ratio, above which the beam is long with respect to lateral buckling
b) Determine the allowable flexural stress in the compression flange.
c) Determine the maximum value of the moment at the left support.
