SHORT COLUMN WITH AXIAL LOAD

Problem 1 (Similar CE BD May 2017)


A reinforced concrete tied column is to be designed to support a factored axial load of
2500 kN. Use f’c = 28 MPa, and the 2010 NSCP. Find:

1. The smallest dimension required for a square tied column in mm.

2. The required dimension of a square tied column assuming a gross steel ratio of 2%.

Problem 2
An axially load rectangular tied column is to be designed for the following service loads:
Dead Load, D = 1500 kN
Live Load, L = 836 kN
Required Strength, U = 1.2D + 1.6L
Capacity Reduction Factor, Ø = 0.65
Effective Cover to Centroid of Steel Reinforcement = 70mm
Concrete, fc’ = 27.5 MPa
Steel, fy = 415 MPa

1. Using 3% vertical steel ratio, what is the required column width (mm) if architectural
considerations limit the width of the column in one direction to 350 mm? (Ans: 500 mm)
2. If column section = 350 x 450mm. Vertical Reinforcement consists of 16 bars.
Determine the diameter of vertical bars (mm) if the required minimum steel ratio is 3% (Ans: 25
mm)
3. If the column has circular section, determine the required minimum diameter if it is
reinforced with 8-25 mm Ø bars. (Ans: 494.70 mm)

Problem 3
A 360mm x 360mm concrete tied column is to be designed for a factored axial load of
2200 kN. Capacity reduction factor, Ø = 0.65. Use the 2010 NSCP.
Materials: Concrete, fc’ = 28 MPa
Steel, fy = 400 MPa

1. The number of pcs. 20mmØ bars for the longitudinal reinforcements is nearest to:

2. The spacing required (mm) for the 10mmØ lateral reinforcements is nearest to:

Problem 4
A 400 mm square tied RC column is to carry axial service loads of 2400 kN dead load and
790 kN live load. Assume column to be short and that any moment caused by the loads can be
neglected. Use 2010 NSCP. If fc’ = 28 MPa and fy = 415 MPa, determine:

1. the factored load. (Ans: 2944 kN)


2. the required number of 28mmØ longitudinal bars. (Ans: 8 pcs.)
3. the maximum allowable spacing of 10mmØ lateral ties. (Ans: 400 mm)
4. the required number of pieces per set of ties base on Section 407.11. (Ans: 1 set)

Problem 5
A 450 mm diameter concrete spiral column is to be designed to support a factored axial
load of 3170 kN. Clear bar covering is 40mm and the aggregate size is 25 mm use the 2010
NSCP with fc’ = 28 MPa, fy = 414 MPa for the longitudinal steel, fyt = 414 MPa for the spiral
steel. Limit the gross steel percentage to 2%. Find:

1. The number of pcs 28mmØ for the longitudinal reinforcements.

Problem 6
A 400 mm diameter concrete column is to be reinforced with 8-25mmØ vertical bars

1. the maximum nominal axial strength of the RC column. (Ans: 3232.29 kN)
2. the design axial strength of the column. (Ans: 2424.22 kN)
3. the minimum spiral steel ratio required for the column section. (Ans: 0.01281)
4. the recommended pitch of the spiral reinforcement. (Ans: 70 mm)

PLASTIC CENTROID
- the location of the resultant load when the column is compressed uniformly
- the reference point for eccentricity of loads
- the plastic centroid (PC) is at the geometrical center for symmetrical column section

Problem 7 (Similar CE Bd 2015)


A tied column is reinforced with 5-28mmɸ bars
distributed as shown in Figure-1. Concrete cover to centroid of
reinforcement is 60 mm. Use fc’ = 21 MPa, fy = 415 MPa, Es =
200 GPa. The three bars shall be considered in tension and use
Ø = 0.65.
