ASSIGNMENT NO. 1: SIMPLE STRESS

ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTION:

 Read the problem carefully and develop a mental picture of the physical
situation. If necessary, sketch a simple diagram of the physical
situation to help you visualize it.
 Identify the known and unknown quantities in an organized manner. Equate
given values to the symbols used to represent the corresponding
quantity.
 Use formulas and conceptual reasoning to plot a strategy for solving for
the unknown quantity.
 Identify the appropriate formula(s) to use.
 Perform substitutions and algebraic manipulations in order to solve for
the unknown quantity.
 Copy the problem and answer.
 Use two-decimal places in your computation.

PROBLEM SOLVING

PROBLEM 01: Axial loads are applied to the compound rod that is composed of
an aluminum segment rigidly connected between steel and bronze segments.
What is the stress in each material given that P=15kN? Indicate whether
tension (T) or compression (C).

PROBLEM 02: A machine having a mass of 4200 kg is supported by three solid

steel rods arranged as shown in fig. Each rod has a diameter of 20mm.
Compute the stress in each rod.

PROBLEM 03: The homogeneous bar AB weighing 1600lb is supported at either

end by a steel cable. Calculate the smallest safe area of each cable if the
working stress is 18000psi for steel.

PROBLEM 04: Compute the stress in a round bar subjected to a direct tensile
force of 3200N if the diameter of the bar is 10mm.

PROBLEM 05: A shelf is designed to hold crates having a total mass of 1840
kg. Two support rods like those shown in fig. hold the shelf. Each rod has
a diameter of 12.0mm. Assume that the center of gravity of the crates is at
the middle of the shelf. Compute the stress in the middle portion of the
rods.

PROBLEM 06: Determine the average normal stress in each of the 20-mm
diameter bars of the truss. Knowing that P=45kN and cross-sectional area of
each of the bars is 0.3142x10 -3 m2.

PROBLEM 07: Compute the stress in a rectangular bar having cross-sectional
dimensions of 10mmx30mm if a direct tensile force of 15kN is applied.

PROBLEM 08: Determine the average punching shear stress the circular shaft
creates in the metal plate through section AC and BD. Also, what is the
bearing stress developed on the surface of the plate under the shaft.

PROBLEM 09: The schematic of a punch and washers is shown. Determine the
force P needed to punch out washers, in terms of the plate thickness t, the
average plate shear strength 𝜏, and the inner and outer diameters of the
washers 𝑑𝑖 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑑𝑜

PROBLEM 10: The cable in fig. has a diameter of 1/5in and the pin in the
pulley has a diameter of 3/8in. If the maximum normal stress in the cable
must be limited to 4ksi (T) and the maximum shear stress in the pin is to
be limited to 2ksi, determine the maximum weight that can be lifted to the
nearest lb. The pin is in double shear.

PROBLEM 11: The figure shows a truss and the sequence of assembly of
members at pins H, G, and F. All members of the truss have cross-sectional
areas of 240mm2 and all pins have diameters of 15mm. Determine the
following:
a. Axial stresses in members HA, HB, HG, and HC.
b. The maximum shear stress in pin H.

PROBLEM 12: All pins shown in fig. are in single shear and have diameters
of 40mm. All have square cross sections and the surface at E is smooth.
Determine the maximum shear stresses in the pins and the axial stress in
member BD.

PROBLEM 13: Two cast-iron pipes are held together by a bolt, as shown in
fig. The outer diameters of the two pipes are 50mm and 70mm and the wall
thickness of each pipe is 10mm. The diameter of the bolt is 20mm. What is
the maximum force P this assembly can transmit if the maximum permissible
stresses in the bolt and the cast iron are 200MPa in shear and 150MPa in
tension, respectively?

connection. The spar is a steel tube of outer diameter d 2=3.50in and inner
diameter d1=2.80in. The steel pin has diameter d=1in., and the two plates
connecting the spar to the pin have thickness t=0.5in. The allowable
stresses are as follows: compressive stress in the spar, 10ksi; shear
stress in the pin, 6.5ksi; and bearing stress between the pin and the
connecting plates, 16ksi. Determine the allowable compressive force P allow
in the spar.

PROBLEM 15: Figure shows a roof truss and detail of riveted connection at
joint B. Using allowable stresses of 𝜏 = 60 𝑀𝑃𝑎 and 𝜎𝑏 =130 MPa, how many 20-
mm diameter rivets are required to fasten member BC to gusset plate? Member
BE? What is the largest average tensile or compressive stress in BC and BE?
