Activity #6F: Welded Connections
Name: __________________________________ Course/Yr/Block: __________

Intended Learning Outcome: To be able to determine the capacity of welded connection under direct axial
stress and eccentric loading.
Content/Topics: Welded Connections
Directions: Solve the following problems on a clean sheet of paper. Show a complete solution and write
legibly. Use ballpens only.
Situation #1:
Determine the value of the load P that can be applied to the connection shown if 9.5mm fillet welds are used. Using
E60XX electrodes. (1 in = 2.54cm)

Situation #2:
A double-angle truss member shown in the figure consist of two angles 125mm x 88mm x 12mm thick with the 125mm
side welded to a gusset plate. The member is to carry a total tensile force of 750kN. Using 7-mm fillet weld with E70XX
electrode, determine the length of each side fillet weld required for balanced condition. All steels are A36 with 𝐹𝑦 =
250𝑀𝑃𝑎.

Situation #3:
A column resting on a base plate is shown. The column transmits a moment of 95 𝑘𝑁 ∙ 𝑚 to the foundation
and the axial load on the column is negligible. The moment is transmitted through two angles welded to the
column flange, then to two anchor bolts. The weld has an allowable stress of 110 MPa and the allowable stress
on the bolt is 135MPa.

a. What is the force that will be transmitted through the anchor bolts?
b. What is the moment acting on the welds?
c. Determine the minimum nominal size of the weld.

Situation #4:
A bracket shown is subjected to an eccentric load of 190 kN acting at 100mm from the face of the flange of
the column section. The angular section is welded to the flange of the column section by an E60xx fillet
weld with Fu=485MPa. (Figure is on the next page)

a. Compute the moment of inertia at the centroid of the group of fillet welds.
b. Compute the maximum moment to be resisted by the fillet weld.
c. Compute the thickness of the weld that could be used to carry the load.
