LABORATORY EXERCISE 1
CENG 75 – STRUCTURAL THEORY

INSTRUCTION: Answer the following problems in a clean paper supported by a solution. Box your final
answer. Take a photo or scan your solution and then paste it in a word document. Type “LABORATORY
EXERCISE 1 in Structural Theory” as title head of the page. Also include your Name (Surname first), coarse,
yr. and section.

INTRODUCTION:

Before beginning to analyze a structure, it is important to know what kind of structure it is. Different types of
structures may need to be analyzed using different methods. For example, structures that are determinate may be
completely analyzed using only static equilibrium, whereas indeterminate structures require the use of both static
equilibrium and compatibility relationships to find the internal forces. In addition, real structures must be stable. This
means that the structure can recover static equilibrium after a disturbance. Analytical model is a simplified
representation of a real structure for the purpose of analysis. Development of the model generally involves (1)
determination of whether the structure can be treated as a plane structure, (2) construction of the line diagram of
the structure, and (3) idealization of connections and supports.

OBJECTIVES

After the completion of this exercise, the students should be able to:

 Idealize real structures to obtain analytical models;

 identify the state of determinacy and stability of structures;

 Compute and determine the equilibrant forces on a given force

Instruction. Read the following statement of the problem and show your solution in CE paper.

1. Classify each of the structures shown in the figure as externally unstable, statically determinate, or statically indeterminate.
If the structure is statically indeterminate externally, then determine the degree of external indeterminacy.

3. The floor system of a gymnasium consists of a 130-mm-thick concrete slab resting on four steel beams (A = 9,100
mm^2)that, in turn, are supported by two steel girders (A = 25,600 mm^2), as shown in the figure. Determine the dead
loads acting on beam BF and girder AD.

4. Three-wheel loads roll as a unit across a 44-ft span. The loads are P1 = 4000 lb and P2 = 8000 lb separated by 9 ft, and P3 = 6000 lb at 18 ft
from P2. Determine the maximum moment and maximum shear in the simply supported span.
