1. The water-pump pliers shown in figure are gripped with the hand, thus causing the 130N force
shown. Find the shearing stress in pin A if its diameter is 8mm.

2. In figure shown the cross section of a heavy-duty structural steel column built up of one 300 by
12 mm web plate, two 325 by 10 mm cover plates, and four 152 by 89 by 16 mm angles. If the
allowable unit stress in column is 100 MPa, what total load P can it support?
3. A piece of 5.4 mm wall steel tube used as a structural column is to support an axial load of 170kN.
If the allowable stress in the column is 83 MPa, what size pipe should be used?

4. The 600 mm pulley shown is keyed to the 75mm- diameter shaft with a rectangular steel key
which is 12 mm deep, by 50 mm long. The difference in pulls 𝑇𝑇1 and 𝑇𝑇2 is 5500N. a) Determine
the minimum required width b of this key if the average shearing stress is 94MPa. b) Assume that
the pulley diameter is 500 mm, the shaft diameter is 65 mm, the given dimensions of the key are
unchanged, and the difference in pulls 𝑇𝑇1 and 𝑇𝑇2 is 3.75kN, determine the minimum required
width b.
