What I Need to Know

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you
understand the materials and tools in installing wireways and cable trays. The
coverage of this module permits it to be used in many different learning situations.
The language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of learners. The lessons
are arranged to follow the standard sequence of the subject. But the order in which
you read them can be changed to correspond with the textbook you are now using.

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. identify the materials and tools in installing wire ways and cable trays;
2. prepare tools/equipment and materials needed for the installation of
wireways and cable trays in line with job requirements;
3. used electrical tools as per job requirement; and,
4. develop traits such as in achieving the knowledge regarding the materials
and tools on wire ways and cable trays installation.

The learner demonstrates an understanding on the materials and tools in installing
wireways and cable trays.

What’s In

Direction: List down at least 2 provisions for metal wire ways and 2 non-metal
wireways. Write your answer on your answer sheet.

What’s New

Installation of wire ways and cable trays can be accomplished systematically

to save time, effort, and resources. Most of the work in installation cannot be done
using bare hands. To do the installation of wireways and cable trays, electrical tools
or equipment and materials are needed to perform the job.

Direction: Draw a heart if you are using electrical tools at home? Draw a smiley
if not. Draw your answer on your answer sheet.

What Is It

Supplies and Materials in Installing Wireways and cable trays

MATERIALS AND DESCRIPTION PICTURES

Wireways – These are designed to

protect electrical wires from dust, dirt,
water and oil. They are available in
various styles, sizes and fittings for use
for wide range of voltages. They are
often used to house and protect power
and communications cables for
commercial, institutional, industrial and
utility needs.

Flat bar/brackets – These are long,

rectangular piece of stainless with a flat
surface and square edges.

6
Fastening device for wood, concrete
and steel – This is a material that
mechanically joins or affixes two or
more object together. It is used to
create non-permanent joints; that is
joints that can be removed or
dismantled without damaging the
joining components.

Tools and equipment needed in the installation of Wireways and cable trays.

TOOLS AND DESCRIPTION PICTURES

Lineman’s Pliers - This is used for

gripping, holding, and cutting
electrical wires and cables and
even small nails. They are
usually used by linemen in
doing heavy tasks.

7
Diagonal Cutting Pliers - This type
of pliers is used for cutting fine,
medium and big wires and
cables.

Gimlet - This is a hand tool for drilling

small holes, mainly in wood, without
splitting.

Level Bar – This is a tool for

establishing a horizontal plane. It
consists of a small glass tube containing
alcohol or similar liquid and an air
bubble; the tube is sealed and fixed
horizontally in a wooden or metallic
block or frame with a smooth lower
surface.

Try Square – This is a special purpose

square in wood-and metalworking used
to mark or measure material. The name
try square comes from the concepts of
‘trying a surface’ (to check a surface’s
straightness or correspondence to an
adjacent surface) and ‘square’ (a 90
degrees, or right angle.

8
Push Tape Rule – It is a measuring tool
used to measure the length of an object
in centimeter and inches

Claw Hammer - This tool is

used in driving or pounding
and pulling out nails.

Set of Screw Drivers - These

tools are made of steel
hardened and tempered at the
tip used to loosen or tighten
screws with slotted heads.
They come in various sizes
and shapes.

Chalk Line Red – They are used to

mark lines for precision cuts, level
adjustments or plumb lines.

9
Plumb Bob – It is a weight, usually with
a pointed tip on the bottom, suspended
from a string and used as a vertical
reference line, or plumb-line. It is a
precursor to the spirit level and used to
establish a vertical datum.

Crosscut Saw – This is designed for

cutting wood perpendicular to (across)
the wood grain.

Cold Chisel – These are used to cut

heavy metal that cannot be cut with a
saw or shears, usually because space
is limited. It is also used for any number
of repair jobs, such as cutting off rivet
heads or slicing through rusted nuts and
bolts, and other heavy work.

10
What’s More

Direction: Inside each piece of the puzzle are jumbled letters. Arrange these letters
to form the correct word on electrical materials and tools used in wireways and cable
trays installation. Write your answer on your answer sheet.
