To work with electronic and electrical circuits, a beginner needs to acquire

special hand tools and equipment. Each of these hand tool and equipment does one
or more specific job in connecting, replacing, securing, and troubleshooting of
electronic circuits.

In doing so it is better for a beginner to learn first how to use these hand
tools and equipment and where to use them, before they can start to build or
assemble simple circuit up to complicated ones. Here are the following basic tools
and equipment needed for the repair of electronics devices and appliances.

What’s New

Lesson TEST TERMINATION/CONNECTION

2 OF ELECTRICAL
WIRING/ELECTRONIC CIRCUITS

When working with electronic equipment or with electrical wiring, it may from
time to time become necessary to splice or join wires together. Splices and joints are
essentially the same thing. Several different methods of doing this exist. The
fundamental necessities of an effective splice include making sure the wires are
securely fastened to each other even without solder and that they are well-soldered
to avoid corrosion. All wire joints must also be taped with electrical tape after
soldering.

What’s In

Wires and cables are one of the basic materials needed in electronic and
electrical purposes. It comes in different forms and sizes. In this lesson we will
explore on the assorted electrical wires and cables.

What’s New

Why do you think splicing and jointing is important in an electrical circuit?

3 ELECTRICAL WIRING DIAGRAM

What’s In

A wiring diagram usually gives information about the relative position and
arrangement of devices and terminals on the devices, to help in building or servicing
the device.

What’s New

Do you know what kind of diagram is this? Well, if not let us proceed to our new
lesson to find out the answer.

What Is It

WIRING DIAGRAM

A wiring diagram is a simple visual representation of the physical connections

and physical layout of an electrical system or circuit. It shows how the electrical
wires are interconnected and can also show where fixtures and components may be
connected to the system. Use wiring diagrams to assist in building or manufacturing
the circuit or electronic device. They are also useful for making repairs. For example,
a home builder will want to confirm the physical location of electrical outlets and
light fixtures using a wiring diagram to avoid costly mistakes and building code
violations. An example of a wiring diagram is shown below.

http://repairguide.autozone.com/znetrgs/repair_guide_content/en_us/images/0900c152/80/1e/4b/10//small/0900c152801e4b10.jpg

When and How to Use a Wiring Diagram

Use wiring diagrams to assist in building or manufacturing the circuit or

electronic device. They are also useful for making repairs. DIY enthusiasts use wiring
diagrams, but they are also common in home building and auto repair. For example,
a home builder will want to confirm the physical location of electrical outlets and
light fixtures using a wiring diagram to avoid costly mistakes and building code
violations. To better understand how electricity works in our circuit let us
understand the basic of electrical theory.

Electrical Theory

Direct Current and Alternating Current

Direct Current or DC is the first type of current because it was easy to

produce. This type of current always flows in one direction. One of the disadvantages

10
of using DC is the excessive voltage drop and power loss in the power lines in a long-
distance transmission. Batteries are common sources of direct current.

Alternating Current or AC is the solution to the problem of DC. AC

allows the flow of current in two directions. Today, it is possible to step‐up electricity,
a power station, transmit it to any distant place and step it down to for consumption.
A transformer is the device used for stepping‐up or stepping‐down AC voltage.
Common sources of AC are found in our AC outlet (Typically, 220 volts, in the
Philippines).

Parts of Simple Electric Circuit

A Simple circuit contains the minimum things needed to have a functioning

electric circuit. A simple circuit requires the following:

AC/DC source

▪ Equipment that will operate on either an AC or DC power source

▪ Battery – A dc voltage source containing two or more cells that
convert chemical energy to electrical energy.
▪ Cell‐ Single unit used to convert chemical energy into a DC electrical
voltage.

11
• Fuse is a safety device used to protect an electrical
circuit from the effect of excessive current. Its essential
component is usually a strip of metal that will melt at
a given temperature. It is usually rated in Amperes,
which represent the maximum continuous current it
could handle without blowing.

ucts/electrical-circuit-
protection/fuses/images/bussmann-product-
family-images/bus-ele-class-h-k5-fuse-family.jpg

• Conductor (wires & cables) in most circuits consists of one or more wires. The
conductor must form a closed loop from the source of voltage and back again.
In the circuit above, the wires are connected to both terminals of the battery,
so they form a closed loop.
• Switch is a device used to break an
electric current or transfer it to another
conductor. Switches are commonly used
to open or close a circuit. Closed is the ON
position, while open is OFF position.
Normally, switch is installed in series
with the line carrying current from the
power source to the load.

• Light bulbs that convert electrical energy to other forms of energy. In the case
of a light bulb, electrical energy is converted to light and thermal energy.
