READING FAULT CODES FROM ECU

THE INSTRUMENT DISPLAY

The instrument display at the centre of the instrument cluster can show various
information about the bus. For example it is possible to view any fault codes
that have been set by the control units.

STOP

THE WINDSCREEN WIPER HANDLE

The windscreen wiper handle at the right of the steering wheel is used to navi-
gate the menu system.

• Up/Down buttons – used to browse up or down through the menus.

• Return button – confirms selected choice.
• Esc button – rejects selected choice or moves one step up in the hierarchy.

NAVIGATING MENUS
The display may contain status information of some sort depending on the bus
status. If this is the case, then press the Esc button to display the main menu.
Use the up/down buttons on the windscreen wiper handle to browse up or down
through the menus. Press the Return button on the windscreen wiper handle to
enter a desired menu. If you wish to return to the level above just press the Esc
button on the windscreen wiper handle.

SETTING THE DISPLAY LANGUAGE

To change the language, navigate to menu Display Settings > Language.

READING FAULT CODES FROM ECU

Navigate to menu Diagnostics > Fault Diagnostics.
This menu displays all control units in the vehicle. Select one of the control
units and press the Return button to read possible fault codes.
The fault information is displayed in plain text. Press “Return” to view more
information, for example the fault code according to the SAE standard.
To reset a fault code, follow instructions on the display. A password is needed,
and this is by default “0000”.

The control units communicates according to the SAE J1587 protocol. Mes-
sages carry information from one control unit to another. The standardised com-
ponent numbers identifies transmitters and receivers on the data links. The
standard is extended with Volvo specific codes (PPID, PSID).

MID (Message Identification Description) identifies the control unit. For exam-
ple MID 128 equals the engine ECU. Each control unit has a specific number.
PID (Parameter Identification Description) identifies a function that can send
variable signals. For example MID 128 PID 94 equals fuel delivery pressure.
PPID (Proprietary Parameter Identification Description) identifies a Volvo spe-
cific function.
SID (Sub-system Identification Description) identifies a component which is
either on or off. For example MID 128 SID 1 equals injector 1.
PSID (Proprietary Sub-system Identification Description) identifies a Volvo
specific component which is either on or off.
A fault code also consist of MID (P)PID/SID but with an additional FMI (Fail-
ure Mode Identifier). The FMI is a number that describes the type of fault. There
are 15 FMIs. For example MID 128 PID 94 FMI 1 equals low fuel pressure,
where FMI 1 in itself means “too low value”.
Fault codes are stored in the control units and may be read out with a diagnostic
software. It is also possible to display them in the instrument display. To find out
what a fault code means, find the corresponding MID table in the complete
bodybuilding instruction with fault code tables.
Some important fault codes will appear in the instrument display as they are set,
but most will only be stored in the control units.
