DESIGN ACTIVITY ON
SHAFT DESIGN
INSTRUCTION : This activity is intended to
determine your readiness in identifying the design concepts, applying the concepts in the analysis
and solution appropriate to the given problem and proper presentation of the design solution.
Below is the criteria for evaluation OR RUBRIC for performance evaluation reference for the
learner.
1. Appropriateness of the design concepts & its considerations - 30%
2. Correctness of the solution - 50%
3. Clarity, Neatness & overall impact of the presentation - 20%
Total 100%

GENERAL PROCEDURE IN DESIGN ANALYSIS:

1. Translate the statement into the standard format of presentation as presented such as data,
required, figure and solution.
2. Identity the stresses at the different sections or members based on the manner of loading,
its effect to the body, other related theories, properties and standards
3. Solve the required parameter using a general solution approach, a final solution to the
required parameter using literal values only,
4. Compute the size or required parameter using the general solution.

PROBLEMS:
1. A steel shaft 1.75 inches in diameter transmits 40 Hp at 1800 rpm. Assuming a modulus
rigidity of 12 x 106 psi, find the torsional deflection of the shaft in degrees per ft length.
2. Compute the nominal shear stress at the surface, in MPa, for a 50 mm diameter shaft that is
subjected to a torque of 0.48 kN-m.
3. A 1-inch diameter shaft has a single disc weighing 75 lb mounted midway between 20”
apart. Find the lowest critical speed in rpm. Neglect the weight of the shaft. Assume that
the modulus of elasticity is 30 x 106 psi.
4. A 50-mm diameter shaft is to transmit 12 kW power at a speed of 500 rpm, determine the
mean diameter of the pin, under double shear, for a mat’l having a safe stress of 40N/mm2.
5. A 16 ft steel line shaft has no bending action except its own weight. What power in hp can
the shaft deliver at a speed of 200 rpm. Consider that the torsional deflection will not
exceed 0.008 per ft length.
6. The torsional deformation of SAE 1040 steel shaft is 0.8 deg. in a length of ½”. The shear
stress is 69 Mpa. Compute the diameter of the shaft in mm. Steel Modulus of Elasticity is
79300 mPa or N/sq. mm
