TOPIC: TENSE REVISION (PRESENT SIMPLE, PRESENT PROGRESSIVE, PAST SIMPLE)

MATERIALS: TEXTBOOK, NOTEBOOK, BLACKBOARD AND CHALK, worksheets

LESSON AIM:
- UNDERSTAND BETTER THE CORRECT USAGE OF THE TENSES (PRESENT SIMPLE, PRESENT
CONTINUOUS, PAST SIMPLE)

ACTIVITIES:
1. The teacher checks the absents (1’)
2. The teacher checks the homework (2’)
3. The teacher writes on the blackboard several sentences: I eat breakfast daily/ I’m eating now/ I ate
breakfast yesterday. The teacher asks the pupils to identify the meanings of the sentences and the
tenses in English (5’)
4. The teacher, together with the pupils, revise the present tense simple, present tense continuous, past
tense simple, their forms and rules of usage (15’)
5. The teacher gives the pupils some worksheets containing exercises with the three tenses (30’). The
pupils solve the exercises under the guidance of the teacher.

PRESENT SIMPLE

The Present Simple verb tense has two primary functions:

 To talk about general truths, that is, to talk about something that was true in the past, is
true now, and will be true in the future (e.g., The sun rises in the East. Nurses work hard.
Water boils at 100 °C.)
 To talk about habits or rituals (e.g., I pay income taxes every year. She drinks coffee.
We watch T.V. all the time. The Giants always lose.)

PAST SIMPLE
Use
We use the simple past tense to talk about an action or a situation which happened in the past.
Form

 Affirmative sentences:
Subject + Verb + ed or an irregular form
I/a dog etc.   worked/went/saw

 Questions:
Auxiliary verb + Subject + Verb
did   I/a cat/my brother and I   go/take

 Negative sentences:
Subject + Auxiliary verb + Verb
I/a cat etc.   didn't   go/take
