Instructions
This laboratory exercise is to be carried out individually.

Objective
In this laboratory exercise, you will be using Matlab and Simulink to model and analyze the
Discrete Time Linear Time Invariant (DT-LTI) system using Fourier and z-transform.

Background Theory

The study of properties and behavior of a system using a body of mathematical techniques based
on linear system theory. A theoretical system can be defined as the response of impulse h(n) and
input signal which is a time varied mathematical function, x(n). Then, the output of LTI system
y(n) is the convolved pattern of system impulse response with input signal in such a way as to
form a whole. A complete analysis of linear system is concerned with the study of its
fundamental characteristics and its responses. Practically, all the analysis is being carried out
discreetly, but input is a continuous time version. So, the appropriate conversion technique
required to use initially to make a discrete and then all the fundamental discrete analysis will be
conducted. At the output stage, the discrete outputs will be converted into analogue for
producing outputs and thereby significant responses can be extracted. To perform the analysis,
appropriate mathematical properties will be coded as well as modeled using suitable simulation
platforms for this significant study of linear systems.

Lab Work
You are expected to do the following work in the laboratory;

1. Choose your own Continuous Time (CT) input signal, which consists of three different
analog frequency components. Identify the corresponding Discrete Time (DT) output signal
for exiting the Linear Time-Invariant (LTI) DT system.

2. Consider the Discrete Time (DT) system with the system

function h (n ) = δ(n ) + δ(n − 1) + δ(n − 2) for analyzing the output response, excited with DT
input signal.

3. Demonstrate the appropriate theoritical analysis for signal conversion, frequency domain
representation, system transfer function, pole-zero plot, output response, step response and
frequency response using z transform.

4. Execute the MATLAB program for the entire work mentioned above with appropriate
comments.

5. Summarize the outcomes of entire work as a report with inclusive of discussion and
conclusion.

6. Present your work done in a report format to your module lecturer.

APPENDIX 2
Instructions to Students about Discussion, Conclusion and Reference

Discussion
In the Discussion section you should give an overall appraisal of the results of your work. It is
here that you will have the best opportunity to demonstrate your understanding of the work and
to give a critical account of what has been achieved.

Conclusion
The Conclusion is a short summary of the results of your work (about 200 words). The
Conclusion should follow naturally from the Discussion. It should give a concise statement of
what has been achieved. Anticipated application of techniques developed should be summarized
very briefly. The Conclusion should be self-contained, i.e., it should not make reference to any
sections, figures, or references in the report.

References
All references to books, papers, and other publications must be fully and correctly quoted to be
useful to the reader.

Example

Scanlan (1989) and will…. In the References section Scanlan, J O (1989), “Analysis of Varactor
Harmonic Generators”, Bell Systems Technical Journal, Vol. 44, pp75-92.
